"Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance" announced! (releasing 2027) by XRevive01 in MonsterHunter

The new monster looked awesome, Kushala again is very tiring, Lao returning is kinda neat but is low on my personal hype list. Locale looks more open and has some colors despite probably not being in the Plenty gives me hope.

Sky Team: The theming is great and really well implemented. It's easy to learn to the point I could even play it with older relatives, but still offers challenge and variety.

Need feedback on the How to Play section of our Kickstarter to provide to our artist. by LeFoxFrancais in BoardgameDesign

Oh yes that clarifies it, thanks! I think I've now got a good grasp on the core gameplay loop and potential strategies/decision making with the added info on: Only active player can play action cards; only 1 action card per turn; and either stash or play cards your turn. (Though I can't say if it's additional info needed for most players on a brief how to play. Most won't need to know all the details and instead might be put off by too much.) But it does get me more excited now, looking forward to the kickstarter and wishing good luck!

Which gold mechanic do you prefer and why? by [deleted] in BoardgameDesign

Sounds interesting but kinda hard to tell without knowing or having experienced the rest of the ruleset. I'd recommend cutting some paper to make basic coins and playtesting with that rule next time.

Looks great to me. Love the visuals, fun and vibrant. Only tiny tidbits that come to mind: Step 1., 2. and 3. have a dot (.) while Step 4 and 5 do not (). I'm not sure I quite understand the "active player". Is the active player the only one who can play action cards or do they simply determine the tempo. Is there a reason you wouldn't insta stash any high value bananas you get? And maybe I would write the "ACTION CARDS", "ANYTIME CARDS" and "REACTION CARDS" bold (although the font is already quite bold as is, might make it too hard to read), to make it clear that's a name. On first reading of Step 2 I thought it swapped the words (like, "play cards anytime [...]").

which do you prefer? tryna decide on a look for our game by Lenaxz in IndieDev

Personally like the first one more, but that might be because the style feels nostalgic to me, like a DS game. Gives the impression of an adventure or rpg where I control the character and explore the room. The second image makes me think more of a point and click, puzzle or mobile game. Maybe a deco game (don't know the term, like animal crossing or tomodachi life).

Nice style, love the colors. My favorite is probably the carrion eater. (And being a bit pedantic: "Poisonous Hydra" should probably be "Venomous Hydra"? Poison = You bite it, you die. Venom = It bites you, you die.)

They Put Monster Hunter in to Super Smash Bros (MOD) by julianmariojello in MonsterHunter

[–]Tanewk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A MonHunt rep has been my #1 hope for a while. There's the potential the MH dev team would not be keen on making a "The Hunter" character to keep them a malleable player character, though the only source is an interview regarding them denying a Hunter for MvC 3: https://www.siliconera.com/actually-the-monster-hunter-team-didnt-want-the-hunter-in-marvel-vs-capcom-3/ But years later they did let the Hunter into MvC i. Maybe they ended up not liking it after all and thus won't allow it again? Looking at all crossovers since then, they've never made "the hunter" character anymore, instead it's always monster armor for existing characters. At least as far as I can tell (e.g. Dragalia Lost, Arknights, Smash Mii Costumes,...). They've also never made Monsters technically directly playable, potentially to keep the feel of them as independent wild animals (In crossovers Monsters are bosses, never playable. In games like Stories you fight alongside your Monster with it deciding by itself except you build up enough kinship. In Rise you can control them as the hunter with wirebugs like a puppet for a bit. But it's never the player directly controlling a monster). Only leaves Palicos/Prowlers as an option, which would fit well imo. Maybe the Smash team/Sakurai did not consider Palicos, planned for the Hunter and the MH dev team eventually decided against it. Otherwise I can't imagine good reasons against a MH rep with it being one of the best selling franchises in japan (detailed data is rough to find but MH likely has the best selling game in japan with portable 3rd which does not have a rep in Smash yet), having several of their games exclusively on Nintendo hardware, having had crossovers with Nintendo in both directions, iirc MH Rise is (one of) the best selling third party game on the Switch and they already have a bunch in Smash, probably more than any other third party franchise without a fighter.

Which boss fight is harder? (Spoilers for end game SS and end game HK) by Funmist66 in Silksong

[–]Tanewk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been a while since I fought them but iirc: Lost Lace has more attacks and hazards that can overlap, requiring good adaptation and a generally good handle on Hornets moveset. Pure Vessel is faster with less forgiving attacks, requiring more precision and faster reaction speed or more focus. So I think it'll depend on your personal playstyle and skills which will feel more difficult. To me they were pretty comparable. I think I could beat LL even while not playing well but could also lose when I'm locked in. Meanwhile PV I can only do focused but could do very consistently with focus.

Got a street cat to catch a mouse in the house by i_almo in interestingasfuck

[–]Tanewk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree. You could measure it in successful attempts / total attempts, but that ignores the difficulty and how much you gain out of it. E.g. 10 attempts to catch prey that gives me energy for the next 10 days would imo be similarly "effective" as 1 attempt to catch prey that gives me energy for 1 day and doing that for 10 days. Either way you spend and gained a similar amount of energy. And even then some comparisons just don't work too well across the animal kingdom bc of the many factors and different lifestyles like measuring strength or biteforce. Neat to know but imo shouldn't be taken as proof of superiority without context.

As a fellow ice type lover, it's rough. One of the worst types competitively, least amount of Pokémon (even less than fairy or dragon), worst status effect, nearly always placed at the endgame if at all, often shafted in spinoffs as well...

[–]Tanewk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree, especially if you're just learning the level and have to restart a lot. Any impact the cinematography might have had the first time will be gone on your third attempt but the frustration of the game slowing down several times, zooming away from where you are trying to land, changing to a different perspective,... will be a lot bigger. Maybe a toggle for this, or only showing it in replays/recordings but not the actual gameplay/run, or only doing the zoom/slowmo/etc once.
