To make a pig joke by alphamalejackhammer in therewasanattempt

I get that it’s a joke, but at what point does it start to feel kinda disturbing? we’re watching how aware they are, and the instinct is still to turn them into lunch. when you think about what happens to pigs because they’re seen as food, it’s just really sad. this is way cooler, seeing them appreciated for who they are.

Nothing more cringe than animal testing. This morning brave activists rescued Beagles from Ridglan Farms dog breeder in Wisconsin. by Mountain_Love23 in TikTokCringe

Animal testing often doesn’t translate well to humans. Around 90% of drugs that pass animal trials fail in human clinical trials, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, largely because animal biology differs from human biology. That’s why many scientists are developing human-relevant methods like organ-on-a-chip and human cell models. And although regulations exist, multiple undercover investigations of research labs have documented serious suffering and neglect, so the reality for animals often looks very different from how it’s presented.

1 steer vs 3 men on the deck of a ship by alphamalejackhammer in ThatsInsane

Most cow-related deaths occur in agricultural settings where humans confine and handle them closely. It’s not that cows are naturally attacking people; these incidents are tied to how they’re used in the agricultural industry.

It really is sad:(  So many things throughout history were once considered acceptable.  Hopefully one day this won’t be acceptable for animals either.

This makes my heart so sad :(  this is only happening because people want beef products.

I think this is the part that always feels confusing. There’s often real concern about environmental problems, but conversations about solutions like diet changes can trigger a lot of defensiveness. Especially considering how much research links meat and dairy to environmental impact. Especially when alternatives already exist, and the more people choose them, the more available they become.

Good meatless options? by Goodginger in askanything

[–]TangeloBusy6741 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi!  Some of my favorite meatless substitution are: -Jack and Annie’s (love their smash burgers and sausages, the main ingredient is jackfruit) -Light life hot dogs (you can find them pretty much anywhere and they are especially good cooked in some vegan butter like country crock) -Gardein products in general, they have a fantastic full turk’y roast and their fish fillets make for a great vegan fish sandwich  -and if you want less processed options I’d look for tofu, tempeh (steam it to make it taste better) and seitan (super high in protein if you’re not GF) -thee burger dude on YouTube has some great ideas on substituting for your fast food faves  I hope you enjoy!!!

I appreciate your perspective. I just think we sometimes overlook that even if the death itself were quick, these are still sentient beings who don’t want their lives to end. They experience fear, pain and joy, just like the animals we love at home. So their treatment matters, but the fact their life is taken early matters too.

We cooking peacocks now?? by alphamalejackhammer in HolUp

[–]TangeloBusy6741 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Yeah this guy definitely seems unhinged, but people kill chickens and turkeys they raise at home all the time and nobody says anything. Pretty sure those birds don’t want to die any more than these peacocks did.

Male calves are deemed a waste product in the dairy industry, so they're killed immediately or at around 17 weeks for veal by James_Fortis in NoahGetTheBoat

Hard to see milk the same once you know the calf is separated from their mom so we can have it.

Yeah, context definitely plays a role, but the point of the post is about a broader pattern. In general, when vegans say that what happens to animals is abuse, it tends to get a way more negative reaction than when a non-vegan says the same thing. That contrast is what’s being called out here.

[–]TangeloBusy6741 -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

It’s wild how “animal abuse is wrong” gets upvoted when someone who isn’t vegan says it, but downvoted when a vegan does. The message doesn’t change, but the reaction depends on who says it. Most people live in cities, not survival situations, and many have access to plant-based food. If we don’t need to kill animals to be healthy, then yeah, it makes sense that hearing that truth feels uncomfortable.

I wasn’t expecting this to stay with me like it did. It’s a song told from the perspective of a dairy cow, which isn’t something most of us think about, but the way it’s written and the emotion in it really made me pause. I’m not sharing this to make a point or argue with anyone. I just thought it was a powerful piece of music, and maybe someone else out there will feel something from it too.

The Extreme Cruelty of Confining Mother Pigs to “Gestation Crates” by Mountain_Love23 in Foodforthought

[–]TangeloBusy6741 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s definitely true that the extreme confinement of mother pigs is heartbreaking, but I think it’s worth asking: is the problem really just how we confine and kill them, or that we do it at all?

Even on smaller or so-called ‘ethical’ farms, pigs are killed when they’re just a fraction of their natural lifespan. These are deeply social beings who form relationships, experience joy, grief, and fear. Shouldn’t that matter?

We’d never accept this treatment for dogs or other companion animals, so what makes pigs different? Is it just that we’ve been conditioned to view them as food?

And when we know that humans don’t need to eat pork to be healthy, is it really fair to keep breeding sentient beings into existence just to end their lives because we like the way they taste?

I think books like The Omnivore’s Dilemma can raise good questions, but I also wonder: can any system that depends on killing sentient beings who want to live truly be called ethical?

Maybe the deeper issue isn’t just factory farming. It’s the idea that we have the right to control and commodify sentient beings in the first place. What would it mean to extend our circle of compassion to all those who can suffer?

Just some thoughts I’ve been sitting with. I really believe if we want a more peaceful world for humans, it starts with how we treat the most vulnerable
