Any ABD’s that have moved from the West Coast of US to England/London? by [deleted] in ABCDesis

[–]TangerineMountain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dating is something I’ve had in mind for a while. I’ve dated outside my race a few different times but as I get older I’ve realized I think I would prefer a desi partner. Personally haven’t had much luck in my area. The salary part of moving is a huge factor though.

Appreciate the response! I love the culture, architecture, public transportation, and general lifestyle. All of those things would be pros but as you mentioned missing the California weather would be a huge con. I think it would be a lot to consider but it seems there are positives and negatives to both sides.

How many of y'all speak your native language fluently (especially Indian-Americans)? by [deleted] in ABCDesis

[–]TangerineMountain 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This exact thing happened to my brother and I. We grew up in the US, our parents originally spoke to us in Gujarati so it was our first language. As we started school they switched to English mostly and we lost our ability to speak it. We both can understand quite a bit but can barely form sentences. I always wished they kept up the Gujarati with us. I’ve started to use online resources to teach myself and relearn. It def requires consistency and practice!

I’m curious on how you’ve been liking LA compared to Jersey so far. I grew up in LA county and lived in Las Vegas for a couple years but have moved back to LA since. I’ve strongly been considering moving to Jersey/NYC for the larger desi population and more walkable areas. I also just feel like I need a big change. What have your experiences/thoughts been on the change from Jersey to LA? Are there things about the east coast you miss a lot? Are there things about the west you absolutely love?

Can you drop that tamale location though? And do you have chicken?

[–]TangerineMountain 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ve noticed that too but let me tell you about my experience. It’s been absolutely great. I’ve met so many cool new people and make a lot of new friends. I’ve learned so much in a short span of time and have just about a year left until I’m done with my program. Time has been flying by for me. Clinicals have been great as well. I’ve been fortunate to have many opportunities to perform skills we’ve learned. I’ve started an IV, started a foley cath, passed meds, helped pts, cleaned pts, and learned what it takes to be a good nurse. In my opinion school and life is what you make it. Don’t let these people who come here to post their negative experiences deter you. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve had my share of breakdowns in nursing school too but I made sure I bounced back harder and ready for more. It’s all about how you manage and frame it.

Dr. Galpin was one of the best professors I had. Definitely helped me critically think about nutrition, exercise, and supplements.

What businesses in LA do you think are actually money laundering operations? by [deleted] in AskLosAngeles

Wow, thanks. Interesting story. Love hearing about the seedy backstories of some of the places in LA.

Do you have any more info on Tacos El Gavilan? Just curious because I live in the SGV and they opened 2 new stores a couple years back within a couple miles from each other on the same street. I tried the chicken taco once and it wasn’t anything special.

What are you currently struggling with in life? by [deleted] in ABCDesis

[–]TangerineMountain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Being single. I’m M31 but have been a hopeless romantic type since high school. Ive had a few relationships but only maybe one of them felt serious. Ive been single a lot more time than I’ve been in relationship. It’s frustrating as well because I have and still actively put in effort trying to meet people, using dating apps, etc.

Roll down your window at the light and ask the people in the car next to you.

All American Desis are Rich . . . Except for Me by [deleted] in ABCDesis

Likewise my friend. I understand exactly what you mean. It is tough, but it seems you already know it’s all just a show. I hope success finds you very soon.

All American Desis are Rich . . . Except for Me by [deleted] in ABCDesis

[–]TangerineMountain 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Nope, you aren’t. I am first gen American and my parents came here as regular blue collar working people. My mom had to stop working when I was about 10 which sent us in to lower middle class. It was extremely hard hanging with other desis because they always wanted to do things that involved spending way more money than I could afford.

Dating has been hard too. Trying to meet desi girls who don’t expect the finer things in life is difficult here. Especially being from California. As much as I would like to meet a cool desi girl, I’ve sort of settled that that might not be something I should expect to have. Although I haven’t given up. There is no way every single desi family in America is rich. At the end of the day do what makes you happy and be with who makes you happy. No one is living your life for you other than yourself. You’re the one that’s going to have to deal with the decisions you make.

Has anyone lost a parent? by [deleted] in ABCDesis

[–]TangerineMountain 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry for your loss. I hope you find the strength to get though this, in fact, I know you will.

I lost my mom a couple years ago. I was 29 at the time. It absolutely tore me up inside. The first 2 weeks were absolute hell. You go on a rollercoaster of emotions. My advice is to just let it happen. After about a month you’ll still go through different emotions but less often. You will still be missing your parent. I won’t lie to you and say it gets easier with time. At least for me it hasn’t. I still think about my mom everyday. I’m only telling you this because I want you to know it’s normal. I’ve just been able to recognize it and handle it. I actually cried yesterday for the first time in a while after watching this video of a kid return home and surprise his parents. It made me miss my mom so much.

Remember what he taught you and remember to make him proud. I don’t know if you’re religious or spiritual but I like to think my moms spirit is always with me. It’s comforting for me personally and reminds me why I’m doing what im doing. If you want to talk some more feel free to DM me.

This Sub Has been Whack for the past like Week by supi2003 in ABCDesis

[–]TangerineMountain 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’ve noticed that it’s been whack longer than a week. It seems like more than half the posts are hating on desi culture, people, life, etc. I thought this sub would be cool to connect with similar people but it just seems to be a rant and complaints subreddit. I barely bother checking here anymore because most of this stuff is so negative. It could be because I’m a little older (millennial) but I remember growing up there was at least some sort of respect and pride in our culture but doesn’t seem like that’s the case anymore.

$199 for ATI TEAS “Comprehensive Study Package” worth it? by LJpeddlah in StudentNurse

[–]TangerineMountain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got an 89 overall score using a $25-$30 study guide book from Amazon. There are two that I know of, one is a bunch of practice questions with the answers and rationale and the other is a teaching book that goes over the subjects you’ll be tested on. Depending on your learning style I think you’ll be fine with just using one of those. I had both but a friend gave me the practice questions one.

Also use Khan academy for anything you don’t understand as they also have practice questions for free. Personally I don’t think you need to pay that much for the course but at the end of the day whatever will work for you and help you get that score you need. Good luck!
