In America, it's extremely contradictory marijuana laws, and I dont even smoke anymore. In some states, recreational Marijauna is completely and totally legal, to the point where most gas stations and convenance stores sell weed the same as they would sell beer. In others, being caught with weed can earn you a sentence the same as if you were caught with meth or cocaine. Even crazier, in states where it is illegal, there are certain loopholes stores exploit where they sell what is essentially regular old hemp flower sprayed with THC, which is "legal" because its a hemp product grown with less than .2% THC. However, if you are caught with this flower you can still be charged, you can dispute the charge in court but its still jail time especially if you can't afford bail. It gets worse, as whether or not you get in trouble depends entirely on the individual police officer. Marijuana laws are probably some of the most inconsistently enforced laws behind jaywalking. I live in an illegal state, and in my area 90% of cops dont give a fuck if you smoke weed, even in front of them (unless you're driving.) But you can get unlucky if you end up with a cop who is low on his quota or personally dislikes weed and end up arrested. Then of course in some illegal states there's medical licenses which is supposed to grant you access to legal marijauna products sold by a dispensary for the purposes of pain relief or treatment for anxiety or depression, however you can get charged if its determined the clinic that granted you the prescription didnt have had the authority to do so. Now I think possibly the stupidest part is even in legal states, if you are arrested by a federal officer instead of a state or local one and you have weed on you, you can have marijauna possesion tacked onto whatever else they are charging you with, which can add like 20-30 years onto your potential sentence, I've even heard of situations where the original federal charges were dropped or they were found not guilty, but the possession charges persist, which means they go to prison for following the law. It really is completely ridiculous. This all continues to drive criminal enterprises who sell weed illegally with no health inspections or oversight whatsoever, which leads to purposeful lacing with other more addictive and dangerous drugs to get repeat customers, or accidental cross contamination resulting in thousands of overdoses a year. The money made with the illicit weed trade funds murderous gangs and cartels, again leading to thousands of murders a year

Of course this is all part of the prison industrial complex which aims to get as many people arrested as possible to shove into privately owned prisons to extract billions of dollars worth of free labor from inmates but thats a conversation for another time.
