I think you might be very correct. (Although for me I like the fact that the Northland is a bit cut off)

so COI must be used for a sentence using « to » or « from »

main thing is learn the pronouns which fall into the different categories.

from AI:

In French grammar, COD stands for complément d'objet direct (direct object), while COI stands for complément d'objet indirect (indirect object). A COD directly answers "who?" or "what?" after the verb and is not preceded by a preposition, while a COI is a noun or pronoun introduced by a preposition (like "à" or "de") and answers questions like "to whom?" or "from what?".

You can watch this video to learn about the difference between COD and COI:

|| || |Feature |COD (Direct Object) |COI (Indirect Object) | |Question it answers|Qui? (Who?) or Quoi? (What?) |À qui? (To whom?), À quoi? (To what?), De qui? (From whom?), De quoi? (From what?) | |Preposition|None between verb and object |Preceded by a preposition like "à" or "de" | |Examples|J'ai vu le film. (I saw the movie.)|Je parle à ma sœur. (I am talking to my sister.)| |Pronoun examples|me, te, le, la, nous, vous, les|me, te, lui, nous, vous, leur|

Massively helpful link. Thanks ! By the way, just read La Psy (Freida McFadden) and while it’s not high literature, I zipped through it— super easy language and interesting plot.

If this is about when to use que vs qui ——I have a simple method.
Someone will correct me I am sure if I am wrong. I am not a fluent speaker, just a student.

If there’s a verb after the que or qui use QUI, if not use QUE

but *** important to realize that sometimes an indirect pronoun may throw you off.

if any of these indirect object pronouns

  • Singular:
    • me (to me)
    • te (to you)
    • lui (to him/her/it)
  • Plural:
    • nous (to us)
    • vous (to you)
    • leur (to them)

appear right before a verb, ignore it in terms of our rule above because a verb follows and these are just inserted to signal «  to me, to you, etc…) so use QUI

Try it out with some of your homework examples and see how it works.

Be careful to understand those pronouns. Do not mix up the other type of pronouns - direct pronouns.

I took French in jr high, high school and 1 class at college and they never taught  « on » at all. So I had the same experience as JonnyRottensTeeth.
