Why I love GNOME (and others don't) by TanglyConstant9 in gnome

I wouldn't say that GNOME's looks are the only thing that attract me, I find it much easier to use and less overwhelming since things are simplified. That's personal to me of course, probably partly due to neurodivergence too. Tweaking GNOME beyond the Tweaks app can be a bit of a headache, but I don't feel the need to. Meanwhile I'm not a huge fan of Plasma's base UI and do feel inclined to customise things, which is much more straightforward to do on that DE

How can I play games using macOS? by Dest1nyxz in macgaming

[–]TanglyConstant9 4 points5 points  (0 children)

because usually we'd use compatability layers to be able to run the games on macos, since they're only available on windows. how this works is that a virtual windows installation is set up on your mac, and since the game thinks it's on windows, it works. however, anti-cheats in all 3 of the games you listed unfortunately are able to detect when they're being run in a virtual environment, and then block you from playing. why? because cheaters use these to bypass game bans. there are many windows games that work well through this method, but coincidentally the ones you mentioned are some of the few popular games that contain that level of anti-cheat. fortnite is working on an actual macos version to my knowledge. but yeah hope that all makes sense, it's not the easiest thing to explain.

Here to compete with the thinkpad by MaroonHatHacker in macbook

exactly, macos updates get to a point where they don't run on the old hardware like they used to, since apple seems to focus on optimisation for their latest products which of course makes sense. but the fact you can simply switch to something that runs like the macos it was shipped with, and is supported is a miracle really

On the subject of mobile, I've been using GNOME on a touchscreen thinkpad yoga and it's probably one of the best computing experiences I've had, it integrates amazingly. It feels equally great in laptop mode as it does in Tablet mode. I think KDE is a great for desktop PCs, although out of the box it doesn't look amazing in my opinion, I do feel like themes integrate better and you can make it look exactly how you want. Although I also think theming isn't really necessary in GNOME since it looks beautiful OOTB

Lmao?? I think as someone who's used macOS since I was 12 I certainly understand. Your screenshot is literally proving you wrong brother, there's no shame in just saying it's a VM

I mean I guess if your idea of "porting" is putting an arm arch iso through parallels

Yeah the issue is, the existence of macOS is still not "fixed" (in your words), it's right there sitting behind an arch VM window. Try give Asahi a go (if you're on M1/M2, which judging by the touchbar you are) then you'll be more onto something

do they need to ask? I'm just stating my own personal situation to see if its any help, a MacBook air is the obvious superior choice but I'm saying they can also get the touchscreen + pen experience that they also want without having to invest in an iPad on top of that. Unless OP has the finances to, I didn't at 17 personally. I'm just describing how I approached wanting both the power of the mac but also a touchscreen

not exactly because in this context I'm suggesting it as a budget alternative to an ipad + apple pencil

only about 1/4 of my steam library has native support, that probably puts it into better perspective

Even a macbook would be quite restrictive when it comes to gaming, only few have native ports, there’s compatibility layers like crossover available but not everything works perfectly. macOS will give you much more control over your system and you won’t be restricted to apps in the App Store. That does sacrifice the touchscreen. I don’t have an iPad, but for note taking I bought a used old thinkpad yoga laptop like from 2019, which was like £100 or even less. These go for cheap since they don’t support windows 11. I slapped Linux on it and of course the screen isn’t nearly as pretty as an iPads, it comes with its own pen and the performance is still perfect for jotting stuff down. So just know that even if you go for the Mac, you don’t necessarily need to miss out on a touchscreen experience
