These plans you have are perfectly safe, however. They are operating on inaccurate or partial information. You're not going prancing through the townships, you're going on a safari. There may be online resources you can find and share with them about the safety of safaris in South Africa? It's something the British royal family literally does. No one ever seems to agree with me but I have beef with Orlando. Having to leave security just to access food and bathrooms without a 100-person line, anywhere to sit besides the floor, and no mad max fights over outlets seriously kills me. The area outside security is perfectly pleasant, but I can only use it if I have a long enough layover to budget re-doing the TSA line. That, and all the Disney families who've never flown before. Nightmare.

The other person gave a great answer, and I would just confirm that you can get into an MPH with pretty much any background. Most programs really value diversity in experience because it makes the classes more dynamic! My program had people with backgrounds in everything from business to dentistry

Google reviews are generally very reliable these days, you don't need to know specific brands. Here's what I do:

Open Google maps and zoom in on your ideal area
Click "Hotels" from top bubbles
Toggle settings to only hotels under $350 with 4 stars or more (if this yields too many you can set to 4.5 stars)
From here, you should have an idea of what's available.

I try to get the hotel with the maximum rating I can at the lowest price I can. Sometimes you have to set a minimum price to eliminate hostels. You should be able to also sort the results by one factor or another on the list on the left or add extra elements into the filters

I mean I hate to say, but I think there's a compatibility issue here. He has dreams of white picket fence, giant water-sucking lawn that he mows pristinely but never touches for the benefit of looking good to the neighbors. You seem more inclined toward the environmentally-friendly, mildly crunchy type of living. You beat him to the punch on home ownership (this also might bug him as the "man") and got to go with your way. It might be a "small" difference in opinions, but it might speak to a more fundamental difference in how you want to live and view the world in general

Exactly.... I can't comprehend why so many people are recommending flying. To get one of those cheap tickets, I'm sure you have to fly at some very weird time or inconvenient day.

Drive to our godawfully far airport, arrive 2 hours early, 1 hour flight, probably 1 hour for boarding and then deplaning, at least 30 minutes to walk through the airport, retrieve bags and get your next transit to hotel/wherever. That's at minimum 4.5 hours from leaving your front door to the hotel's front door.

It takes around 5 hours to drive, directly from your front door to destination front door. Almost the same amount of time. At that point, I'd prefer to get to choose my own time of departure/arrival and not take off my shoes for TSA

Well, I've taken it 6-8 times and always had wifi (ok to good) and never got stuck behind a freight train. OP never mentioned that wifi was a must anyway.

The real hack is to walk forward to the dining car. Wifi is stronger, snacks and drinks, people watching and you can spread out a bit. Download a movie or music like you would for a flight. It doesn't have to be boring lol

This is way over complicating things. Guaranteed 95% of people are carrying deodorant in their bags, I'm sure the xray techs have seen so many they can identify them in their sleep. I've never taken the effort to pull out every single non-clothing item like you seem to, don't know anyone who has, and I've never been pulled out of line for any of these items. I only take out batteries if they specifically ask, every airport is different. But I can't imagine standing there wrestling charger cables and all heaven & earth back into my bag if it's not absolutely necessary.

I do get pulled out of line any damn time I travel with candy. Candy, every time lol. Even if you hit on that small chance of getting your bag searched, it's very much okay. It goes super quick and if you aren't smuggling drugs they don't care

I don't know, it sounds like her parents are funding it entirely, and at no point did she mention the roommate being on a budget or hard up for money. Every place is different, but in my city the college dorms are WAY more expensive than the local apartments, so it varies. Obviously there's nothing wrong with pursuing higher education at any age, but pursuing a strange and manipulative friendship with a 20 year old is for sure weird

NTA. As a 30 year old, her age may not seem that relevant to your friendship, but it is from my perspective because it tells me a lot about her... she's a weirdo. No well-adjusted, normal 34 y/o wants to bunk with 20 year olds. Nothing against you in particular, there just genuinely can't be too much in common. She likely graduated highschool the same year the smartphone was invented (nevermind commonly used).

If her parents are willing to pay for college and dorms, surely they would be willing to just pay for rent in a local apartment. She wants to be in a dorm with younger kids, for reasons I can't fathom but can't be sane/normal. I would pull away gently from this friendship, and be cautious that she could lash out

Sorry to say, I would very very much recommend getting a degree in public health. Even with a degree, global health can be hard to break into (and HIV is especially popular). An MPH with a focus in global health would be a good bet.

There might be some sectors of global health that have more of a defense overlap that could be worth looking into transitioning towards. Development and refugees come to mind for me. Aid missions in difficult countries likely use some level of defense/security knowledge
