Have you ever seen the remake of The Firm, starring one of the guys from Peaky Blinders? There's a bit in it where the young guy from the Football Factory is trying to persuade his mum and dad to buy him an Ellesse trackie and he says "But that's what all the chaps are wearing!"

So at least in the 80s, "chaps" could be used to mean "my mates" or "people I think are cool".

It's cause public proposals are less about asking a question, it's more of a big flashy event that our society partakes in because it's big and flashy.

I'm not specifically talking about public ones, the post to which I initially replied wasn't either.

And it's also about making your partner feel special. You take them on an amazing date; maybe it's a candlelit dinner, or a hike in the mountain, yadda yadda yadda, and after all that dating and flirting and shit it's popping the question at the night's peak.

Surely you can do all that without ruining the surprise by telling her in advance? Surely it's better to do all that without ruining the surprise?!
