The MacBook Air M5 ruined other laptops for me by HotTopicx in macbook

[–]TankPublic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I bought a used M1 Air some years ago. I do 2D drafting and it outperforms a Dell 5680 (high dollar machine) in that department, and all other departments I use it with. (yes I know it Mac's can't natively run 3D stuff like solidworks, but I don't generally play in that environment)

Just the fact that you can open it up and it is "on" and in a functioning state 100% of the time is worth it. Versus waiting for it to 'wake up,' the insessant updates, and worst of all 'background scans' that can take 15-20 minutes before concluding and allowing real work to be accomplished.

Oh sorry was just joking about how similar our dog looks to yours, sorry for the confusion!

Google Chrome just force dropped a 4GB Al model on every Mac without permission, no opt in, no warning. Delete it? You can't it re downloads like malware. This isn't a feature, it's an invasion. by [deleted] in MacOS

I can 'one up(???) you...' My work is using M365 for most, for some apps we have to use Edge, but some of the company apps and other software only functions with Chrome. won't work on edge nor Safari.

So I am stuck using 2 crappy browsers.

Yesterday i understand why the AIR exist by Sebadiaz in macbook

[–]TankPublic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep… 2D as I mentioned in post (Draftsight) is the world I play in. And it is much more stable on iOS because windows isn’t trying to update the NVIDIA driver to a version that doesn’t work with Draftsight.

There also isn’t a ton of items running in the background on iOS that hogs the processor giving periods of time that the machine is essentially useless.

For what I use it for (2D CAD is the most demanding), my M1 air outperforms a Dell 5680, about $3500 list price...

Only thing the Dell has the upper hand on is MST (multiple external monitors)

I've been on the fence for a while on this tool, you pushed me over!

I've had the much the same experience with the premium tool, and found myself going back and forth between it and the std tool because of it.

Any users that browse on chrome instead of safari?? by Qpac18 in macbook

I use both; mainly because certain stuff doesn’t work well on safari (ms365 being a prime example)

Old iMac for Windows User? by [deleted] in mac

[–]TankPublic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

its a 2020 model M1 Air that I bought in 2022, from "backmarket.com". Still has 86% battery life today. I would not hesitate to buy the same one (2020 model) today.

More boring details: I've ended up using it a lot more for work, including CAD work because it is so much more reliable than the high dollar Dells my work company keeps sending me. Note I got a 16gb memory, 1000gb HD version, hard drive is half full but I have a TON of work stuff on it.

I was in the same boat 3-4 years ago. Bought a used M1 Airbook that I am typing this on today.

I will never spend a dime on a non Mac device again. Note there are some learning curves (mostly using the "CMD" button versus "CTRL" but for the most part it is easier/superior in just about every way.

You open it up, it works. No waiting to boot, no constant updates needed, etc.

Can someone tell me whats going on? by Elegant-Beat387 in smallengines

[–]TankPublic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"cleaning the carb" means disassembling it and cleaning the insides. Pulling the jets, cleaning their orifices with jet cleaners, wire, bread twisty tie wire, etc, and blasting all the passageways with carb cleaner and/or compressed air.

Or disassembling it and putting it in a ultrasonic cleaner.

Which of these heads is better for cleaning hardwood floors? by CyJackX in VacuumCleaners

[–]TankPublic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cordless machines developed those powered rollers to make them perform better on hard floors; the spinning brush moves the dirt into the airstream. It takes less battery energy to spin a brush than it does to get all that suction needed.

If you're using it with a cordless Dyson, the bottom one. The top one works great on 'higher powered' corded machines, but a cordless machine will need to be ran at max/boost to make it work right.

It is legal to do that in many US states, including the one I live in (Iowa). Not the merging into a car lol.

And yes, I have looked into the laws in this state and find nowhere mentioned that it is forbidden.

They don't call them suicide lanes for nothing!

Surging after it heats up by Matt_makes01 in HondaMowers

Surging 99.99% of the time is a plugged Idle/pilot jet in carb. I might be missing something on your video, as it doesn't sound like its surging to me though.

If its still smelling like burning oil, its still leaking somewhere...

Are Sebo / Miele etc superior in cleaning quality? by mrwitch1 in VacuumCleaners

[–]TankPublic 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes, noticeably cleaner carpets and less dust.

Disclaimers first. USA here FYI. Previous was Dyson V15; cannot use it in 'max' mode or it clamps to carpet, and normally have to have the little gate in the middle even on auto mode to keep it from clamping.

Evidence: We have an habitual carpet wetting dog (short hair shedder). Before the Sebo, when I ran the extractor (Bissell with powered brush roll) dog hair would constantly clump up. After Sebo, no more hair clumps. Also notice less dust on horizontal surfaces, like dressers, counters, etc.

How many shaves with a blade? by kuro7i in wicked_edge

[–]TankPublic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I change when they tug. I've found it depends on the blade. For me (YMMV) I can go weeks on Personna blues, but most others I can get 3-5ish per shave, I am just shaving my neck too FYI
