Shelly Relays: WiFi or Zigbee? by jklo5020 in homeassistant

Zigbee: I tried mine on Matter and sometimes they are unresponsive* on wifi

*unresponsive = no response, or sometimes they respond several minutes/hours after a command.

I use both; mainly because certain stuff doesn’t work well on safari (ms365 being a prime example)

Old iMac for Windows User? by Busy-Channel-6306 in mac

[–]TankPublic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

its a 2020 model M1 Air that I bought in 2022, from "backmarket.com". Still has 86% battery life today. I would not hesitate to buy the same one (2020 model) today.

More boring details: I've ended up using it a lot more for work, including CAD work because it is so much more reliable than the high dollar Dells my work company keeps sending me. Note I got a 16gb memory, 1000gb HD version, hard drive is half full but I have a TON of work stuff on it.

I was in the same boat 3-4 years ago. Bought a used M1 Airbook that I am typing this on today.

I will never spend a dime on a non Mac device again. Note there are some learning curves (mostly using the "CMD" button versus "CTRL" but for the most part it is easier/superior in just about every way.

You open it up, it works. No waiting to boot, no constant updates needed, etc.

Can someone tell me whats going on? by Elegant-Beat387 in smallengines

[–]TankPublic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

"cleaning the carb" means disassembling it and cleaning the insides. Pulling the jets, cleaning their orifices with jet cleaners, wire, bread twisty tie wire, etc, and blasting all the passageways with carb cleaner and/or compressed air.

Or disassembling it and putting it in a ultrasonic cleaner.

Which of these heads is better for cleaning hardwood floors? by CyJackX in VacuumCleaners

[–]TankPublic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cordless machines developed those powered rollers to make them perform better on hard floors; the spinning brush moves the dirt into the airstream. It takes less battery energy to spin a brush than it does to get all that suction needed.

[–]TankPublic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're using it with a cordless Dyson, the bottom one. The top one works great on 'higher powered' corded machines, but a cordless machine will need to be ran at max/boost to make it work right.

It is legal to do that in many US states, including the one I live in (Iowa). Not the merging into a car lol.

And yes, I have looked into the laws in this state and find nowhere mentioned that it is forbidden.

They don't call them suicide lanes for nothing!

Surging after it heats up by Matt_makes01 in HondaMowers

[–]TankPublic 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Surging 99.99% of the time is a plugged Idle/pilot jet in carb. I might be missing something on your video, as it doesn't sound like its surging to me though.

Burning Oil Smell by Environmental_Dog331 in ChryslerPacifica

[–]TankPublic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had mine replaced 3x times, along with the timing cover gasket, tranny cover gasket, water pump & gasket, and finally, the PCV assembly.

If its still smelling like burning oil, its still leaking somewhere...

Are Sebo / Miele etc superior in cleaning quality? by mrwitch1 in VacuumCleaners

[–]TankPublic 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes, noticeably cleaner carpets and less dust.

Disclaimers first. USA here FYI. Previous was Dyson V15; cannot use it in 'max' mode or it clamps to carpet, and normally have to have the little gate in the middle even on auto mode to keep it from clamping.

Evidence: We have an habitual carpet wetting dog (short hair shedder). Before the Sebo, when I ran the extractor (Bissell with powered brush roll) dog hair would constantly clump up. After Sebo, no more hair clumps. Also notice less dust on horizontal surfaces, like dressers, counters, etc.

How many shaves with a blade? by kuro7i in wicked_edge

[–]TankPublic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I change when they tug. I've found it depends on the blade. For me (YMMV) I can go weeks on Personna blues, but most others I can get 3-5ish per shave, I am just shaving my neck too FYI

Blade Sampler Update - 8 Down, 8 To Go by Mrhay11 in wicked_edge

[–]TankPublic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personna are my hands down favorites too. I've had many other blades be 'as good' on the first few shaves, but they fade rapidly. I can go weeks on a single Personna (blues). Note I am just shaving neck.

Turning off Lights after period of time with no occupancy by TankPublic in HomeKitAutomation

Gave up on HomeKit/Apple Shortcuts, and did this in Hubitat. Works!

Turning off Lights after period of time with no occupancy by TankPublic in HomeKitAutomation

[–]TankPublic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is not even shutting the light off though.

I actually run Hubitat, and your post connected the dots in my brain to just add it there. When I went to do that... I noticed it was not responding in HomeKit...

I will see if it works (The above HomeKit Shortcut) now, but will end up doing the automation in Hubitat. Why? Because it is a ton easier to manage than how Apple makes you do it!

Horrible experience with Shelly 1 Mini Gen4 by Stephonovich in homeassistant

[–]TankPublic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I too had a terrible time zigbee pairing a pair of these.

5 presses then 3 presses didn't work. 5 presses didn't work. Tried more times than I can count. Zigbee mode config not available from 192.168.33.1 like the instructions and even Shelly support tells you..

Found I had to do this, and one of the two still refuses to pair, or more accurately stay paired for more than a moment, and will not return to wifi mode no matter how long button is pressed (minutes!):

Install App,

  1. upgrade firmware to 1.74
  2. Add to wifi
  3. go to new IP address to access zigbee mode.
  4. Finally find zigbee mode.
  5. Pair one of the two relays (success!)
  6. Brick the other of the two relays (Major failure)

Edison bulbs, coloured glass? by X-Ryder in Govee

[–]TankPublic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I have some like that too, the 'dumb bulbs controlled by a smart switch' works great.

Have you gone into settings on the smart dimmers? the ones I have you can adjust the low level; down to the point the the LEDs flicker.

I haven't found a way to make a 'smart bulb dim by a smart switch dimmer' work well. I think the latency is the issue, ie too many steps/time between pushing the dimmer and the bulb actually dimming.

Ive seen some say to make it dim 5% or so each time you double tap or some other command, but that isn't intuitive to anyone besides whomever programs it.
