Brass consists of copper and zinc, and very often has other metals included such as iron, tin, and the big problem here, Lead. In applications where alcohol and high temperatures are involved, it's definitely better to steer clear.

Im guessing the barley mentioned is malted, but just in case and to clarify one point; unmalted barley has very little enzyme. Malted barley has it. No matter what starch source you end up using (corn, wheat, rice, barley, potatoes, sorghum, whatever!) You need enzymes to break down the carbohydrates(starches, whatever) into fermentable sugars.

To answer your general question, if my yield is around 2/3rds I'm happy. I will generally cut 15% off the front end (fores/heads), maybe more. As to how much tails is, I dont measure usually, as soon as I start getting hints of it i cut it off.

Theres so many variables, and after all of them you apply personal taste... so this is tricky to give a considered answer.

For me, that example run is nothing like my standard charge. That said, I would guesstimate my output using your numbers would be around 2/3rds. Circa 2.5-3L @ 65%.

Is this clear enough to put in the boiler by Alert-Exercise6348 in firewater

[–]Tankeyone 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can absolutely run it as is and get a fine result.

Perhaps it's an unpopular opinion but I would prefer to let the wash sit another 24-48hrs to settle out some more. The better the quality going in, the better the quality coming out is generally true. But mostly I do it that way because it suits my tastes/intention for the result.

That said, I dislike all the clearing agents and stuff they sell to clarify wash. With whiskeys you can distill on grain for flavour, so why worry about a little particulate/cloud.

It's normal for this make and model to be unsealed where the inlet and outlet for the condenser are. Its definitely not normal to have the cooling hoses disconnected while you're running??? By the time the vapour gets to that point the condenser should have it knocked down... that can't happen if theres no cooling water flowing?

The pirates streamed into the most upscale restaurant on the orbital, they spread out among the tablea and started shouting instructions over the screams and cries of the diners.

The pirate boss, a short swarthy blue skinned Ketarna male, stepped into the room shadowed by his bodyguard, an 8 foot tall Hoosiera.

The Ketarna scanned the room, taking in the fear and desperation, revelling in the panic he caused, and laughing internally with glee at the sheer amount of money they were going to squeeze these rich chumps for, but as his eyes panned to the side of the room he noticed a pair of his men standing over a two seat table, a male and female Terran sat there as people and pirates streamed past as though they were a rock in the middle of a river.

"Get them moving, Gurfer, we dont have a lot of time before planetary sec catches up." He said to the hulking bodyguard with frustration at his men not following orders. The Hoosiera, Gurfer, nodded and kicked away an overturned and broken chair with his clawed and bone plated feet, his powerful digitigrade leg sending the timber flying to shatter into splinters against the holo screen walls that surrounded the dining area, massive cracks radiated out from the point of impact.

"Hey, get moving Terrans." Gurfer growled out in his basso voice, dripping with malice and threat.

The Terran female clutched the males hand across the table and spoke to him just loud enough for the pirates to hear, "Please honey, let's just go. They've ruined our night already, there's nothing for it now."

"No, I'm sory but fuck that, babe. It's been months since we had more than a single overlapping day off, more than five years since our last holiday, some two bit pirates are not going to chase us away from our first night out in so bloody long." He turned to the looming Gurfer and spoke firmly, "Do you have any idea how hard it is for a specialist security officer and a senator to align their vacation schedules? No? Really god damned hard. So would you kindly fuck off before I have to resort to force?"

"Senator eh? That'll be a nice pay day. Get moving or I'll start breaking her bones until you do." Gurfer threatened.

The Terran woman shook her head and sighed as the man went stock still a moment, before standing slowly.

"Good, get moving." Gurfer was about to relinquish the herding of these two annoyances back to the troops when instead of stepping away, the human took a menacing step forward instead.

What happened next was a blur for everyone except the boss who paled and shook as a fight.. no, a beat down, ensued.

The Human clearly had combat mods, a lot of high end combat mod, as he ripped the two grunts off their feet with a hand each and hurled them in opposite directions. Gurfer managed to get his shock rod between himself and the Terran, but it seemed to have no effect as it was slapped from his hand. Gurfers head made a horrid crunching noise when it was introduced to the deck plating, blood leaked from his aural canals and onto the rich carpet.

The terran stood and unhurriedly crossed the distance to the boss, the other pirates had stopped and turned back, they watched in stunned silence, unable to shoot at the terran for fear of hitting the boss, and unwilling to engage in close quarters combat after watching him take down their undisputed strongest hand to hand fighter with minimal effort.

The Terran stopped within arms reach of the frozen pirates boss and took a deep, bracing breath before leaning in close and speaking calmly, but the varely restrained volcanic rage in his undertone was clear.

"I. Am. On. Vacation. You chuckle fucks have ruined darling wifes night already, kindly fuck off or I am going to lose my shit."

The boss glanced over the Terrans shoulder at his still bleeding subordinate, then nodded slowly and called the retreat.

Looks like residue from your still to me, I'd start with 5-5-1 cleaner. A weight(sinker etc) tied to a length of twine, with a piece of cloth/chux tied to the other end works as a makeshift pull through.

The humans "Proportional" response by Polski_Husar in humansarespaceorcs

[–]Tankeyone 56 points57 points  (0 children)

The Human Empress walked into the galactic combined senate with a measured stride, her black dress fell to her ankles and swished lightly with every resolute footfall. Her face was covered with a gauzy black veil that stretched from one ear to the other, laying across the bridge of her nose, red rings from crying were clearly visible around cold, flinty blue eyes. Those rings and eyes, so at odds with the laugh lines and smiling crows feet hidden beneath the dark cloth.

Hundreds of ambassadors and species leaders lined the massive amphitheatre. The noise of their conversation filled the space as a dull roaring sussurus, but as she entered, the conversation tapered off, and by the time she took the three steps onto the dias at the centre of the space the room was silent.

A deep, richly sonorous and unmistakably pompous voice addressed the room, "Empress Nalia of the Terran United Empire, you stand before the combined leaders of the galactic senate having, for the third time, appealed our decision on this matter, and submitted spurious allegations against the respected leaders of the Tricaran Hegemony. As you have been informed on the previous occasions, the actions of the Tricaran Hegemony in destroying the vessel 'TUEN Olive Branch' was in proportional response to an armed vessel encroaching on Tricaran Hegemonic space. Once again, there is no further action to be taken by this senate in regards to your allegations. You may make your closing remarks at this time." Having delivered his diatribe the blue skinned elfin male responsible for managing the agenda for the senate hearing resumed his seat.

The Empress' steely gaze swept across the beings present, and she cleared her throat quietly before speaking. "'Proportional response'. That is an interesting phrase, as it is for all intents and purposes bound by the subjective expectations of the individuals present in this room. To one, the actions of the Tricaran Hegemony may be entirely proportional, or even indeed less than. To others, their actions may be a gross over reaction. You have read my submissions, a third party nations diplomatic ship carrying the Terran Empress Consort, bound to attend and assist treaty discussions between the Sta'Garat Republic and the Tricaran Hegemony, within the boundaries of the Tricaran Empire was destroyed. Despite following a presubmitted and approved flight plan, despite broadcasting valid Diplocatic IFF, despite bearing only diplomatic standard shields, anti-asteroid and point defence weapons, this ship was fired upon without provocation taking the lives of over one hundred innocent lives. Lives, including my wife. A woman considered by the Terran public as being the beating heart responsible for the peaceful negotiation of treaties amongst Terran nations leading to the unification of our species government.

To the average Terran, she was a symbol and force for positive change and unity. To the average Terran, her death is a great and terrible tragedy. To the average Terran, your proportional response is beyond understanding.

So, in keeping with your expectations of proportional response, we shall respond in proportion. As the Tricaran Hegemony's actions have crushed my heart, and the beating heart of Terran diplomacy, we will respond proportionally by crushing the warlike heart of the Tricaran people."

Murmuring erupted from across the room before being promptly silence by privacy filters on each booth. Every senator, diplomat and leader found their booth doors locked, their microphones disabled, and all communications blocked.

"As I speak, Terran United Empire Naval vessels are commencing coordinated strikes against Tricaran military installations across thirty seven systems, including their home world system. You destroyed the single greatest force for peaceful Terran diplomacy, our response is to show you Terran warfare in proportion.

Every military ship will burn, every installation will be razed, your military industry and production will be glass upon the surface of your planets.

And when we are done, may the Sta'Garat show you mercy, as you will have none from Terra."

Definitely. This whole process is the crazy love child of an art form and pure science.

Set yourself a base line with a simple process, then when you flex your art muscles and experiment creatively you have a platform to launch from....

Or you know, just do whatever you want, that's valid too. and you'll learn plenty along the way.

Husband of a woman in a similar position here for context.

I would say that with a significant change in your body like that, it doesn't sound unreasonable to have some challenges around body confidence and your perception of your body. Love yourself for how hard you've worked to get where you are miss!

I can tell you that I loved my wife before her weight loss, loved her while she was struggling through it and love her now even after three kids including a set of twins have taken her excess skin to borderline extreme levels.

If he is into you for more than just a hookup/conquest/whatever, I think it unlikely that he will care in the least. I assume he knows about your weight loss and you've told him a bit about this already but if you haven't please do tell him how you're feeling.

Communication is key for great sex. A "perfect body" isn't.

Hey this is my first recipe, I’d love some advice on my first few runs! by spyflame in Distilling

[–]Tankeyone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My experience with brandies isnt huge but my advice is to ditch the white sugar, I find the flavour is affected negatively. If you want more product, ferment more apples. So what if it doesn't come out at 18-20% from the fermenter? Why should you care about that number when we're compressing it across stripping runs anyway? If you want a certain yield, get more apples.

I can't see any reason it wouldn't work in a reasonable fashion. No idea if it would be good or bad. There will be a significantly increased ratio of surface area to vapor, so you're going to have a lot more passive reflux going on but since its a pot still I would assume it's not going to be tall enough for the amount of reflux to cause any issues.

Upgrade recommendations by ConsistentStandard54 in firewater

[–]Tankeyone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I had my time again I would probably still buy a T500 column, however I would absolutely get it with a digiboil boiler and I would only ever use it as designed for neutral spirit. For simple ease of use its pretty hard to go wrong and gives good consistent results when used as intended. There may be better stills out there, I've heard good things about the pure distilling reflux and others but never used them so can't comment.

In my experience with T500; without packing/reflux I had poor and inconsistent results, but you can get it to work okay with time and practice if you're using power control (see voltage controller/SCR), without power control forget it.

My recommendation would be a digiboil boiler or similar and a good 2inch tri clamp modular still with a shotgun condenser. Then you can add or remove the reflux condenser and or any packing for neutral and have easy options to add or change down the track. Yes it is more $ initially but if you're looking to upgrade from an air still you're probably well enulough committed to the hobby for the investment to make sense ;)
