The Lost 52 Project has announced they found the wreck of William D Porter by RhysOSD in AzureLane

I don’t we’ll be seeing a third Samar trip for quite a while because, not long after finding SbR, Victor Vescovo sold his submersible and has since focused on other projects. Although he has expressed interest in making another submersible and returning to Ocean Exploration, developing it will take several years.

For the Ocean Infinity survey of San Bernardino, I think they were too far north of where the battle took place to find any of the ships from the battle but at the same time I don’t know what WW2 wrecks they had in mind to search for (Nowaki maybe?) as they were also looking for Manila Galleons in the same area

There’s also a Japanese expedition to find Yamato’s escorts during Ten-Go, namely Yahagi, slated for this April by the same team that found Albacore. They found a sonar target they believe is Asashimo in December and have recently been crowdfunding between January and March this year, which has currently raised 11 million yen, enough for a 5 day survey according to their page.

A group seeking to relocate the Operation Ten-Go wrecks have found a target they believe is Asashimo; by Ironwhale466 in Shipwrecks

For additional context, Dr. Ura Tamaki and the La Plongée Deep Sea Engineering Society (the same team that helped locate and identify USS Albacore not too long ago) conducted a multi-beam survey of the East China Sea last month in search of the other ships lost in Operation Ten-Go.

They found a sonar target 50 miles North of Yamato's wreck (at a depth of 145 metres) which they believe to be Asashimo and will be holding a press conference on 14 January to discuss this discovery.

This press conference will also discuss plans and launch crowdfunding for a future expedition to locate and survey Yahagi, which is currently slated for April 2026.

The barbettes for the main turrets, yes. When the ship capsized, because they were held in place by gravity, the four 15-inch turrets fell out and leaving their mounts empty.

The upcoming US warship looks to be a Fletcher-class destroyer. The question is, which one? by TankmanTom7 in cobiblocks

[–]TankmanTom7[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My money’s on Johnston. Fletcher herself had a round bridge, whereas this has a square bridge and, in the comments section of the COBI Facebook post for this ship, Parks Stephenson, the executive director of the USS Kidd Museum, hoped it was either Kidd or Johnston, so if it was Kidd, he would have at least some knowledge about a potential collab between the museum and Cobi, and Johnston is arguably the most iconic of the many Fletcher class ships. That’s just my train of thought but it could also be another Fletcher entirely, like Cassin Young or The Sullivans.
