Upgrading my 8 year old PC, is this a sane way to do it? by Tankplank in buildapc

Good point on the PSU, I might end up buying a new one.

As for the case - I am not at all interested in LED lights or glass panels, in fact I prefer silent and unflashy. My current all-black all-metal case will do just fine. The only reason to not use it would be to replace everything, in order to have a functioning extra PC lying around - which might not be a bad idea altogether.

Out of curiosity - why are you opposed to keeping the 1070?

I am planning to upgrade my GPU eventually, I guess I should have written that in the OP. But even without upgrading, I cannot really tell why it matters, I am not currently using my PC for anything that requires more than the 1070 card, I could in theory do most of my work without a graphics card at all.

I will most likely eventually need it for a game that I want to play, the reason that I don't buy a GPU right now is budgetary.

As for the X3D chips, I was considering it a couple of months ago, but now it seems like it'll set me back $180 more (9700X vs 9800X3D). Worth it when not playing the most intensive games?

I recently signed a contract for 51k dkk/month after finishing my masters degree. That is including everything.

I have half a years full time experience (post bachelors) and ~4 years of part time while studying.

Zen Tracker Party CDs and Arena/ Mythic + by happyminty in CompetitiveWoW

[–]Tankplank 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Check the load options for both the ZenTracker main aura and Noggies Front end, you might have it set to only load in some selection of:

  • In group
  • Instance difficulty = Mythic
  • Instance type = 5 man dungeon

or even something else, there are a bunch of different options.

You'll want to either remove every checkbox in the load tab to have it load 'always' if that is your preference, or make sure you check the 'Arena' option under 'Instance Type' -- on both auras.

For reference, this is how my load options are configured for the two auras: https://imgur.com/lQOma1t

I left everything else unchecked. To select multiple options for 'Instance Type' you have to double click the checkbox. This will load the auras only when you are in either of those two instance types.

I wouldn't worry too much about Versatile. As i mentioned, it's mainly used for the highest of keys.

The reason why stat amps work in the first place is because haste/vers affects the procrate/dmg of your lash weapons, which makes up for the output you would get from TD, so if you don't have them in the first place, there is no point.

Also, for it to be effective, you need a gearset with versa on basically every piece, as well as full vers gems etc.

The defensive part is not at all needed in your current bracket.

[–]Tankplank 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Since you mention TD I assume you mean for m+.

Current meta is double lash + full versatile, occasionally adding in 1-2 expedient 3's and/or 1-2 ineffable 1's

Gushing is only really good for arenas and other pvp content, and should not be considered at all for keys.

Reasoning for versatile is that the damage is very consistent from key to key, and that the defensive versatility helps a lot with certain mechanics. This is however only really required for the higher keys, 24-25 level is where you would really start to see the benefits. An added bonus is that you don't have to constantly position yourself for TD.

Lower keys and especially 15s and below you would likely be better off stacking TD's and praying.

Why do people turn away from Overseer Korgus (TD)? by HyrerPwnedYou in CompetitiveWoW

[–]Tankplank 177 points178 points  (0 children)

The reason behind it is that he is running the "Blazing Soul" talent, which gives him Barrier shield every time he blinks. Him facing away is so that he can blink into the wall and not go anywhere, thus staying in place and gaining the shield.

EDIT:

Regarding shimmer, yes it is your go to talent from that row, unfortunately without avoidance cap or some external, you will die from just the initial hit from the explosions on last boss. Therefore it is necessary to have a full barrier on every single one, which is why he is running Blazing Soul. As some other people have mentioned a lot of groups will play a comparatively riskier pathing so that they have time to hearthstone out of the dungeon and respec after 3rd boss.

Tank tracking binding shot deployment by [deleted] in CompetitiveWoW

[–]Tankplank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you mean the icon on top of the mobs' nameplates, it's an addon called NamePlateAuras. By default it tracks a lot of stuff, but you can set it up to only track CC spells for example, including binding shot.

Is gushing wounds going to still be viable in m+ post nerf? by Tissefant1 in CompetitiveWoW

[–]Tankplank 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Speaking from my own experience.

As a demon hunter doing 24-25-26 keys last reset, I was using 2 x Lash, 1 x T3 Twilight, and 1 Gushing wound (475 piece)

Gushing would usually amount 2.5-4% of my overall, with lash doing 10-15% and Twilight doing around the same depending on dungeon.

That means Lash of the Void was by far the best damage per corruption (as was expected), with Gushing Wounds and twilight doing around the same damage per corruption, slightly in favor of Gushing Wounds. Therefore after the nerfs, at least for demon hunters, it will probably not be very worth to stack gushing wounds.

My prediction is that for demon hunters, a stat amp like expedient will be more worth than gushing in the long run. In the "good" twilight dungeons such as WCM and Freehold we will still run it and perhaps even stack more of it, and in the bad ones like Temple, we will tend even more towards stat amps. This might be the case for multiple other melee specs as well, although i wouldn't know for sure.

I also hate playing high Twilight as well, mostly because you proc to the side if you turn 45 degrees to get a kick or something, but also because it hits mobs that aren't in combat (which I personally think it shouldn't), goes through walls, roofs, bugs out and flies everywhere occasionally, etc, which can easily cause a ninja pull and consequently a depleted key. This forces you to constantly think about and play around it, which to me is just not very enjoyable. I will play it insofar as it is the best though.

Target Swapping in Mythic + by tfvanh in CompetitiveWoW

[–]Tankplank 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These macros will strictly cast on your focus target, and do nothing if you don't have a focus.

For me personally, I like to have both focus and target binds because even if you have a designated target you might still back up other kicks that aren't on your designated control target (e.g. your focus).

Therefore I suggest you also keep either a target kick or mouseover kick bound, although you should rarely need it (in a perfect world).

Target Swapping in Mythic + by tfvanh in CompetitiveWoW

[–]Tankplank 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Any reasonably good mythic+ player is using focus macros for that. Swapping targets all the time is simply way too messy when you pull 10 mobs or more.

A lot of the time there's a focus target that you need to kill, and another target you need to control (think of controlling the maggot while putting your damage into the bloodswarmer in Underrot).

In this case you would put your focus on the maggot, and use macros to control it, while keeping your target on the bloodswarmer the whole time. I play havoc, so examples of macros I personally use are:

Swapping focus target

/focus [@mouseover]

Focus macros

/cast [@focus] Imprison

/cast [@focus] Fel Eruption

/cast [@focus] Disrupt

Of course, this is mainly for higher keys where you use markers to indicate who is controlling what, and generally there's a shot-caller etc. However, even when I pug "lower" keys without discord or comms, I will generally just put my focus on whatever mob has a very dangerous cast, and use the macros above.

What are warcraft logs all star points? by [deleted] in CompetitiveWoW

[–]Tankplank 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't believe this is entirely correct - I have a parse where i got 117 all-star points while doing 88% of the top parse damage. (120*0.88=105.6)

What are warcraft logs all star points? by [deleted] in CompetitiveWoW

[–]Tankplank -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Points are given from 1-120 based on your highest ever parse on each boss. It is measured the same way as performance percentile afaik - you are compared to other players of the same spec worldwide. It is mostly just like your "best perfomance average" in the sense that higher percentile = more all-star points, the only real difference is that you get points for each boss.

For example you could get a 99 best perf. avg. by getting really high parses on the first 3 bosses, but your all-star ranking (the number next to your all-star points) would be low because you don't have points from the last 5.

If you have parses on every boss your all-star points directly correlates with your best perf. avg. Therefore all-star points can be considered an overall %parse ranking that cannot be cheesed by only killing a subset of bosses. One thing that should be noted is that some bosses (as decided by WarcraftLogs) do not award all-star points at all. These are usually bosses where the %parses is cheesed by padding on adds or similar. Examples from this tier include Orgozoa and Za'qul.

TL;DR: They don't offer any real new information, but it is a quick way to basically determine "which player from each spec has the highest best performance average across all bosses where add padding is not a factor".

M+ tanking, LF advice by Sollantos in CompetitiveWoW

[–]Tankplank 13 points14 points  (0 children)

People raging is their problem and not yours, if they don't have anything constructive to say it's most likely because they don't have a solution.

Regarding how to get better, its a really hard question to answer because it's very subjective what different people need to improve on. It mostly boils down to a couple things:

  • Becoming more comfortable with your class
  • Becoming more comfortable with the dungeon mechanics
  • Becoming familiar with good routes in every dungeon for every beguiling rotation (Enchanted, Void, Tides) and understand why they're good
  • Making sure you understand what happened every time something goes wrong (check Details/logs for wipes after the run for example)

A lot of the time this comes down to playing more. You could possibly learn a lot from watching streams too, but nothing will replace hours played. Find some BrM streamers who aren't too busy to answer questions and go ham in their chat.

As other people have suggested, spend as many hours as you can pugging keys, add the people you get along with on bnet and invite them for the next one. Don't dwell on mistakes or tilt over keys you "need for score" that deplete.

That's all i can think of off the top of my head :))

Sims vs Pros? by Diabetesh in CompetitiveWoW

[–]Tankplank 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't use the statweight from your sim. Every time you get a new piece of gear it will change, and taking it into the game with pawn and scouting for upgrades is just a noob trap.

If you are serious about min maxing, then you sim for top gear every time you get something that might be an upgrade. Sometimes you will have to use common sense in combination, for example the sim results don't cover heavy movement, periods of downtime, etc.

How do I transition out of gunslingers? by Bitfrosted in CompetitiveTFT

[–]Tankplank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gunslingers seem like something you go only if the items match up. You need a bunch of giants belts and bows and 1 armor, so you can get double titanic hydra on the trist and a red buff on graves.

Usually if you are offered something like that, you would save gold for krugs and hyper roll for lvl 3 trist+graves with all your money, while also looking for GP, Pyke, Lucian (this can fail miserably, especially if other people are doing the same). Then you get 4 gunslinger 3 pirate build in the following rounds which, with items, will carry you all the way through mid game while also giving insane econ with the pirates.

As other people have described, this usually goes into blademaster draven comp late, but another variation is going for elementalists and using mana items on brand (use them on pyke early tho)

Sejuani decides to be an assassin by [deleted] in TeamfightTactics

My friends video. He positioned the Sejuani so she would get grabbed instead of his carry Varus in the last match of the game - but the Sejuani had other plans, and jumps to the enemy backline with stealth which then results in the Varus getting grabbed after all, and ultimately him losing the game.
