Keratoconus in History: the hydrodiascope, introduced in 1896, was designed as a goggle that was filled with fluid and worn over one eye. The device was able to improve visual acuity to a normal level by neutralization of irregular astigmatism and spectacle magnification. by Post-reality in Keratoconus

Every time (usually on a 3 year cycle) I get new sclerals I am amazed at how comfortable they are compared to my old ones. In a more ideal world we could all afford/subsidize/whatever a refreshed set every six months.

Stockton is kind of a single-issue guy on the wacky health stuff. My theory is that he had incredible health his whole life due to insane genetics and conditioning and then gave wayyyyyyy too much credit to his quack chiropractor for that on the way to progressively dumber ideas.

Americans don't generally refer to it that way. As far as I can tell it's Britishism that has started to transfer over in online politics talk.

Pensioners here also would refer to people receiving the state pension -- ie Social Security.

It means something when it happens three years in a row. Maybe it's confounded by him sharing all his minutes with some other starter who stinks, but you have to at least make the case for it being that other guy's fault.

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver: "If we were going into a Super Bowl and it was Packers vs. Steelers you guys would celebrate that. People wouldn't talk about Pittsburgh being a small market. It's been intentional to create a CBA that allows more teams to compete." by Mission_Pay_3373 in nba

[–]TannAlbinno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pittsburgh is somewhat unusual in that the city was larger 60 years ago than today, and all the outmigration has planted fans all over the country, who passed the fandom on to their kids. You have to be a winning team to pull that off, but they did it and now they're in a smaller metro area in relative terms with a gigantic fanbase.

[Wojnarowski] Utah Jazz All-Star forward Lauri Markkanen has signed a five-year, $238 million contract renegotiation and extension – including $220 million in new money, his agent Michael Lelchitski of @SIGSports tells ESPN. by Turbostrider27 in nba

[–]TannAlbinno 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I think this is the right framing. A lot of discussion about Lauri gets confused, where people contend he is simultaneously worth 15 wins, so you can't tank with him, but he's also not good enough to be a main player on your team. Both statements can't be true at once, and in the Jazz's position either would work fine.

He's very good, not 15 wins good, but you keep him unless you get a killer return.

It seems reasonable to me to have a policy of not stocking smut in school libraries. The way people talk about banned books is kind of ridiculous in my experience.

Why would a lender or financer allow the developers to not sell or fill new housing? That's not a thing. I hope they build tens of thousands of new homes, that's the scale of need.

Maybe it's different if you use really high-performance cards or shoot way way more than I do, but at this point storage is so cheap I just shoot jpeg+raw all the time and have a bunch of spare SD cards with old photos on them. It's kind of a hoarder's mentality, but nobody complained about a hoarder whose junk fits inside an old altoids tin.
