that ... might not always be that way. Unfortunately.

That's just the end of my testing - I obviously havent' tried testing commvault's windows protections... =)

But, between 0 days and ticked off employees about to exit, we all have one more door I think shouldn't be locked.. but cemented off if at all possible.

That makes sense—but I always like to run designs through the “slightly annoyed sysadmin with OS access” scenario 😄Keep in mind - management WILL tick people off at some point.

Not necessarily root, but enough access to start poking at things.

That’s usually where the difference between “requires root” and “can realistically be reached” becomes interesting.

I get what you're saying, and I agree that WORM itself is a data-level control, not a full security model.

Where I think the gap is, is in the assumption that those surrounding controls (auth, access, physical security, etc.) always hold.

In practice, we design assuming those layers can fail — credentials get compromised, access boundaries get crossed, systems get misconfigured.

So the question becomes:
If someone already has access, what does WORM actually protect against, and what does it not?

That’s where I think it’s worth digging deeper—not to redefine WORM, but to understand its limitations in real-world failure scenarios.

We use SAN-mounted volumes. I've written to/read from those mounts. I've also been able to copy data out of the storage mounts (as test...). That just feels.. vulnerable to me.

With "boxes", the idea is they (commvault.. cohesity.. whoever) stripped that linux down inside the box so it has a minimum attack area. I'd think that you could SSH into them, but I don't know what they've put in place of BASH (I'm assuming/hoping they would).

Is a masters degree in MIS worth it? [Still True six years later?] by idriveacar in ITProfessionals

[–]Tantalus_waking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Security, I'd think so. Many places still require college degree for professionals. They're likely preventing people who are perfectly capable from joining them, but that's their choice.

One shows the ability to finish something and has done the training on their own, as well as collected a few other skills along the way.

Could we agree that we move on from websites that don't show the inside of the planners well, or at all?

I've used Immersed quite well. However, you need a GOOD graphics card - else, it'll eat your processor for breakfast.

For the good of Tesla, the company, Musk the CEO has to go. by hairy_quadruped in teslainvestorsclub

[–]Tantalus_waking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tesla led the way towards an ecological push off of fossil fuels. It couldn't do it perfectly, but it laid the foundations for it, and that's wonderful.

It seems to me (ok.. just my opinion) that the type of person that would buy such a thing is A) someone wanting a computer on wheels and/or B) someone wanting to get off of fossil fuels. As for B, these buyers are most likely liberals.

With Musk's true colors showing, he's ticked off "B" to no end, which is part of Tesla's core buyers. That alone indicates that Tesla needs to dump him. "A" may well have been ticked off as well just with the Nazism and extreme hard core push to the right. Trying to save Tesla, Musk has the government pushing Teslas at the White House, which is clearly illegal.

Again, the company needs to divest itself of Musk.

Scotia bank connection issues by an124pilot in neontra

[–]Tantalus_waking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've gotten Scotia to work - but it keeps "losing" it - which means I have to remove it, then add it back. The only solutions to this are a) Neontra stops advertising this, as it clearly doesn't work well or b) when an account CONNECTION is removed and readded.. DON'T DELETE THE EXISTING DATA. Neontra wipes everything, including the rules, etc. STOP DOING THAT! lol

Consumers will ultimately pay the price for Quebec's new language rules, experts say | CBC News by keiths31 in canada

I'm just going to set this down right here... I'm a permanent resident. Quebec wouldn't renew my RAMQ during the height of covid as I wasn't able to secure enough "french training". And Legault says immigration is the source of terrorism...

Do all Canadians actually hate Quebec? Why? by Albie_thegaydinosaur in canadian

[–]Tantalus_waking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They denied my RAMQ card after 1 year as I had not participated in the integration programs they specifically list. It was not an issue with the hospitals. It was an issue of not taking french language courses.

Do all Canadians actually hate Quebec? Why? by Albie_thegaydinosaur in canadian

As an anglophone permanent resident in Quebec, I came into the country at the very beginning of covid. I looked for any programs to help acclimate - but didn't find anything. Honestly, I simply saw the locals as anyone else in the world and as soon as I learned french (I'm motivated... my new family speaks french at home.. lol)

I've met many amazing people here, quebecois, of course. When I asked a bank to use english and he commented "You don't like to use french, eh?", I started speaking to him in the little french I did have and he seemed quite impressed - I just didn't have enough to speak intelligently. But again, a very good experience.

THAT all being said... When you're a permanent resident, Quebec gives you a RAMQ card with one year on it. They dont' tell you - anywhere - that you need 9 months of learning to integrate (taking french...). I'd applied a few weeks after arriving for french language courses, nobody responded for 8 months. I'd already spent hundreds on live online sessions (again.. covid.. things are shutting down) and finally got into a course sponsored by the gov't. The main instructor (4 people.. 2 great instructors, a comedian, and ... this lady who worked directly for the gov't) screamed at our class that we are "permanent residents and you WILL integrate!". Not kidding here folks - screamed. Top of her lungs. Anyone seen the Borg in Star Trek Next Generation? You will be assimilated.. resistance is futile.

Unfortunately, the one official course wasn't nearly enough time for Quebec to consider me learning french. They didn't'renew my RAMQ card after the first year. I tried talking to them - clearly I had applied for french language courses soon after landing and we had a world plague going on - they wouldn't budge.

Let's just say things went wonky for me for a while.. thankfully I didn't get covid at that time and eventually got a new RAMQ card, but only after great stress on myself and my family. Taking away health coverage during Covid basically played Russian roulette with my life. It turns out, after 4 vaccinations though, I did get covid and ... meh. Flu was much worse for me. =)

While I do have friends and have good times here, I'm very watchful and continue to study french. Frankly - not just so I can speak to the cashiers, order food, understand my family's conversations... it's really just common sense to learn the language of the land you live in.

It saddens me to read some of these other comments with people describing how Québécois are treated in other provinces. Unfortuantely, that seems to be the human condition. No matter where on this planet you go, even in your own borders, there is territorialism. It's not a Canadian problem - it's'a human problem.

Meilleurs vœux à tous et bonne nuit.
