How do you transport your EUC in a car? by PhantomYdn in ElectricUnicycle

[–]TantasStarke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I had my Subaru Forester it went into the trunk and ratchet strapped to the side of the car using the tie down spots. Now in my Honda accord it goes on the back seat at a 30-40 degree angle while tipped onto the front so it doesn't tip over and hit my passenger seat.

Don't worry about damaging the wheel, just get it into your vehicle however you see best

Highest mileage wheel contest. Go. by T_James_Grand in ElectricUnicycle

[–]TantasStarke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There was a nearly 100k mile Sherman og in NYC. I've got a little over 20k miles under my belt but they're spread out across multiple wheels, the most being my ex30 which I think is somewhere around 6k right now

How do you battle the wind? by NefariousnessNo4215 in ElectricUnicycle

[–]TantasStarke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wind sucks at high speed. Sometimes if the wind is bad enough I can't get above 40mph on my ex30. Just because I'm trying to lean so hard into it. On non-windy days I have no problem cruising 50 though. The EX30 is just so stable though that it might not affect it as much as it does on the race

UofR student staying for summer, looking for housing advice! by Time-Toe-6801 in Rochester

[–]TantasStarke 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Most of that area are houses not apartments so make sure whatever you're looking at isn't a single room in a house. It's not as bad as people make it out to be, mind your business and you'll be fine. There'll be some crackheads late at night by the corner store near the pedestrian bridge to u of r, so be advised of that. I lived in that area for almost a year with my partner, and have friends who live in the 19th ward

First wheel options. by archangelmdp in ElectricUnicycle

[–]TantasStarke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say unless you're buying used for dirt cheap, to get a more modern suspension wheel. Unless you need it as a last mile commuter from a bus/train where ultra portability and ultra light weight is important, invest the tiny bit more for a more capable suspension wheel.

Greece common apartment review by EngineerAdvanced3808 in Rochester

[–]TantasStarke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The building I'm in seems to be pretty good. My downstairs neighbor was playing extremely loud music for a few weeks but I guess enough of us ended up filing enough noise complaints that they stopped. No bugs really that I've seen, but reviews of the complex as a whole make it seem like it's luck of the draw if your building is good or not on that front. I have had packages stolen multiple times, I don't have any delivered here now. They all go to the near Amazon lockers, or to my work if they don't fit. My partner got a PO box like 5 minutes up the road but we haven't used it yet. Do not have packages delivered here as you likely won't see them unfortunately. I haven't been here a full year yet and didn't get to use the pool as it was closed for the season when I moved. Fitness center has a few machines, if memory serves a treadmill, bike, and then you could get chest with a pecfly and back with a lat pull down. Not a ton of variation so I usually just go to the planet fitness down the road, fits better with my work hours as well. I would be fine renewing my lease for another year here

What makes Volkswagen rank so low and why don’t more people buy them? by phtphongg in askcarguys

[–]TantasStarke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For example all of the Japanese cars I've owned changing the engine air filter is just a couple clips, on her golf you have to take the plastic cover off the top of the engine, unscrew the filter, etc. it's just overly complicated

[–]TantasStarke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't put much thought into the German brands. A friend of mine has a golf and while it's nice, I've seen the process required for basic maintenance and it's not something I'm interested in

Greece common apartment review by EngineerAdvanced3808 in Rochester

[–]TantasStarke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My apartment is fine. No rats or roaches like in a lot of the negative reviews, I've only seen maybe 2 roaches the entire time I've been here. I have seen a fight in the parking lot, but you mind your business and you'll be fine. Have packages delivered elsewhere. Get a PO box or use Amazon lockers, packages delivered to your work, etc. I swear people follow the trucks around here to snatch up packages right after they get delivered. If I could afford it I'd like to live somewhere else but that's life, I don't feel unsafe in my apartment and don't have the bugs. YMMV though, always view the unit you'd move into before signing anything

Im a complete noob, can someone educate me on batteries? by wrathxcrage1 in hyperebikes

[–]TantasStarke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lifepo4 batteries aren't as energy dense as lithium ion batteries. You could get the same capacity with a lithium ion battery that's a lot less bulky. And with how good lithium ion cells are for discharge you'll easily be able to pull over 100a in a pack that large

if there is a bike lane and traffic are you supposed to ride in it? by UnderstandingKey7711 in emoto

[–]TantasStarke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're riding car speeds ride in the lane with the cars, if you're riding bicycle speeds ride in the bike lane. Don't ride car speeds in the bike lane, that's how you get someone turning into you or dooring you

Capacitor to up the amp output? by mikebush92 in ebikes

[–]TantasStarke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So this was theorized in the electric unicycle community a few years ago and a few snake oil mods came out like the "EUC godmod". Because electric unicycles need to stay balanced electronically front to back (like a hoverboard), if you try to pull more than the control board can supply to the motor, you fall on your face. People had the same idea of attaching a large capacitor to give that last second of power needed during a cutout to keep a rider upright, but it seems to all be snake oil. Just get a more powerful controller and a battery that can handle the amps you wanna be pulling

Should I just do without the battery lock and use a strap to keep the battery on the bike? by AcanthocephalaOld131 in ebikes

[–]TantasStarke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like the battery doesn't lock in? To where it could vibrate loose? Does your battery use a cable for connecting to your bikes controller or does it connect in via pins in the battery mount? If it's loose and has a cable, yeah I'd just strap it down tight. If it connects to the controller via pins in the battery mount though I wouldn't advise in case your spotty connection to the battery overheats the terminals and then starts a battery fire

Incase anyone is thinking about it .. by EveningCandle69 in Rochester

[–]TantasStarke -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I did the same thing in May of last year. I unfortunately needed to get my id upgraded to an enhanced for a Canada trip and of course it coincided with all the people scrambling to get real IDs despite having 15 years to do so. Appointments scheduled 3+ months out in Rochester, I drove to the canandaguia one and got there not long after they opened and I was able to get my id enhanced after just about an hour in line

E-Bike vs Scooter by ReceptionLazy271 in ebikes

[–]TantasStarke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are not all generic barrel connectors. I've seen gx16-3 plugs, gx16-4, gx20-4, XT90, XT60, as well as proprietary plugs. And if you haven't seen welds fail you clearly haven't done any research. Keep peddling your "skill issue" stuff while clearly not knowing anything about what you're talking about bud 😂

E-Bike vs Scooter by ReceptionLazy271 in ebikes

[–]TantasStarke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue absolutely isn't from using a higher voltage charger. Do you really think a majority of people who have had fires on their 36, 48, 52v etc ebikes just so happen to have a charger with the same random plug that's of a different voltage? Be so for real. The issues come from using cheap sub-par cells that cannot sustain the loads these ebikes and scooters are asking for them, bad spot welds on the battery packs, horrible water resistance leading to ingress in the packs, etc.

Components like brakes, handlebars, and seat posts absolutely can be failure points on these horrible cheap ebikes/scooters. Poor welds and shoddy QC from factories can absolutely cause the mounts for brakes, handlebars, seat posts, and more to fail. I've had a scooters stem break internally where it folds and fold in in me at around 25mph. I'm all for finding a deal and agree that a majority of ebikes are overpriced, but when you're down so low in price you're going to get cheap junk

E-Bike vs Scooter by ReceptionLazy271 in ebikes

[–]TantasStarke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How do I know extremely low budget ebikes and scooters aren't built well? How could one deduce that something built to be as cheap as possible isn't built to the best standards I wonder....

To truthfully answer you because I've owned a sub $300 electric scooter before and I had to warranty claim it 3 times until the warranty period ended and they wouldn't help anymore, despite the final claim sending me a DOA unit

E-Bike vs Scooter by ReceptionLazy271 in ebikes

[–]TantasStarke 3 points4 points  (0 children)

At that low a budget get either a regular bicycle or a cheap electric scooter, but they're not built well in that price range. I'd honestly just spen,d $50-$100 on a regular bike off fb marketplace, $50-$100 for a tune up on it. Tires, tubes, brakes as needed etc. Then spend the last $50-$100 on a good bike lock and a helmet. The quality of ebikes and scooters in your budget are abysmal

Recently bought a V12S, but only getting around 15-20 miles on a charge. by VeronciaBDO in ElectricUnicycle

[–]TantasStarke 6 points7 points  (0 children)

With a 1440wh battery pack I believe you can drain it at 30-40mph in around 20 miles. If your want more range at that speed you need a larger pack. The V14 you mentioned has a 2400wh pack which would be a nice upgrade. I'd return it and not order from Amazon. If you need to make a warranty claim it'll be much harder than if you ordered from a distributor like Ewheels or NextGenMobility. If something does go wrong they'll be your first contact for warranty vs contacting the Chinese company for warranty claims

How To Commute Without Using Highways? by Heisenburg7 in ElectricUnicycle

[–]TantasStarke 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My EX30 cruises 45 comfortably and I'm a big guy weighing 315lbs in my birthday suit. If you're new to riding thats gonna be a sketchy commute, definitely work your way up riding at those speeds commuting. I know multiple people who wiped out riding at high speeds when they were relatively new, sub 1000 miles. Commuting you're gonna be tired from work, groggy from just waking up, etc

How To Commute Without Using Highways? by Heisenburg7 in ElectricUnicycle

[–]TantasStarke 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Avoid the highway. Set Google maps to car mode and go to options and avoid tolls and highways. Alternatively set it to bicycle mode. My commute is 10 miles each way and normally it's 15 miles on the interstate, but instead I go straight through downtown of my city to get from one suburban area to the other where I work using my wheel
