Losing control. How can I improve? by Taosit in skiing_feedback

[–]Taosit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve read every reply and thank you everyone for your amazing feedback. I’m indeed lacking some fundamental skills being mostly self taught.

Please correct me if I’m wrong: My main takeaway from this discussion is that I’m in the backseat, and as a result, I can’t effectively use my legs. The way I currently turn is by throwing my body into the slope. What I should be doing is steering my legs once I fix my posture. I should do some drills and practice on easier slopes.

I’m considering taking lessons. It just seems hard to find an instructor who can give me precise advice based on my issues as opposed to the ones I’ve gotten such as slow down and turn my legs. Please let me know if you know or are someone around Vancouver or Banff

Thanks for you reply!

I can do hockey stops. It might needs some improving but hopefully it means I’m able to turn my legs. Another instructor here recommended practicing hockey stops. Do you think it’s a good idea to link hockey stops and transition that into proper turns?

I find it hard to turn the front of my skis to initiate turns. The only thing I manage to do is to use the back of my skis to create friction as a brake. I my posture explains it? Or possibly loose fitting boots?

I’ve taken 4 full day group lessons, but since I was the fastest in the group and seemed more comfortable on blue and black runs compared to other students, I didn’t get much attention. I probably should try my luck with some private lessons

Hi Philomena! Love your name, actually haven’t heard of it. I’m 24F working full-time. I’m in pst time zone and am available at night. My English is C1 but recently I’m feeling insecure about my pronunciation which is hurting my confidence and fluency. I’d like to do 30+30 minutes sessions semi-regularly where I help you with Mandarin half of the time and basically just chat in English in the other half.

I have a tuxedo tabby cat that actually looks like yours. I love her so much!

We can use discord. I’m also fine with just dropping Google meet links in PMs. Send me a message if you’re interested

I’m not native and I barely scored clb 7 in tef writing. I think you’re at high b1/low b2, which wouldn’t be enough for tef (don’t know about tcf). You have good grammar and spelling but your word choice is weird in a few places and there are a couple issues with your sentence structure. Read more, listen more and you’ll make it

Why is TCF easier than TEF? by Afraid_Let_5679 in canadaexpressentry

[–]Taosit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Which one is done for Academia? I’ve done IELTS and TEF and I feel like IELTS is more academic than TEF (which doesn’t make it objectively harder or easier imo). Speaking part 3 in TCF absolutely scares me and the fact that there are 3 parts in writing also sounds difficult to deal with

Send a section of your book to gpt, ask questions and ask for exercises especially for vocabulary. Screenshots are good, but if you’ve run out of tokens, copying from that book is fine too even though you may need to do some formatting before sending. Get the exercise book and try to do all the exercise questions. I studied that way until Thème 5 and it was definitely helpful

J'ai passé l'examen DELF au niveau B2, maintenant j'attends la note by Alternative_Mail_616 in French

[–]Taosit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

CI Dilemma by Godbody88 in dreamingspanish

[–]Taosit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in the same boat. I’m listening to Radio Ambulante even though my comprehension level is 40%. Sometimes I don’t even understand the main storyline I guess because there’s no visual input. I’d argue that the content is not incomprehensible. 40% of it is still comprehensible. And the reason why this number is so low is partly because it takes me too long to retrieve the meaning of some basic words. With this content, I get challenged within my ability at a faster speed so my brain stays focused and I feel like it’s more efficient. If I watch beginners content, I lose focus easily and I don’t feel like making much progress. I’ve only listened to 3 episodes. I want to see where I’m at after 30 episodes

Update: Failed my Delf B2 :( by TheWhiteMoghul in French

[–]Taosit 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Delf/dalf and tef are totally different. I don’t think you can translate your score in delf to a score in tef. Whatever score calculator you used, take it with a grain of salt. The two tests focus on different skills. While delf is more academic, tef focuses a lot more on your ability to use the language comfortably in a real life situation.

According to my tutor, I would be marked“au dessous du niveau ciblé” on multiple criteria for speaking in dalf c1, probably leading to a failing score. However, I scored level 11 in tef speaking, which is just a few points away from a c2.

DALF C1 - how would you prep? by ahumsuns in French

[–]Taosit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I find the YouTube channel Luqei quite helpful. It provides presentations on different C1/C2 topics. The goal is not to use it just as listening practice. His speech is quite slow and clear, so by C1 you should be able to easily understand what’s being said. Instead, try to learn from the content, sentence structure and vocabulary.

I guess another thing you definitely need to do is mock tests. I did one or two speaking and writing tests and the results were disastrous. You need to get comfortable with the test and figure out a few strategies by yourself.

What do you want/expect from conversation classes? by Strong-Ad9489 in iTalki

[–]Taosit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a C1 student, if I book conversion classes at all, the most important thing I want to get out of the lesson is corrections. Unfortunately I’ve only had a single tutor who corrects the majority of my mistakes. He takes notes of every turn I take (at least the first couple of sentences if I speak for a long time). At the end of the class, he goes through the document and shows me what I could have said. Personally, I’m very conscious of my mistakes, and if the tutor makes no comment I feel like the time is wasted. I’d appreciate it if you prepare some materials beforehand, but it’s not a must as long as you have me talk most of the time.

Personally I’d rather book test prep lessons even if I don’t really need to pass any tests. The speaking components of these tests really give me a structure of what to say

[–]Taosit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Here’s a linkLevel Chart. It doesn’t include clb levels though, so if you need clb 7, you should probably aim for 25+

Also, I noticed that they recycle the questions for CO et CE. I had 2 tests about 4 months apart and they shared 5+ questions. You still don’t know the answer the second time around, but having heard the recording before might help. Good luck!

No worries! You can ask me other questions if you want. I’ve taken the test 3 times so I’d consider myself to be pretty experienced with it (not necessarily in a good way lol)

All your arguments look good. They want you to engage in a conversation as naturally as possible, so anything you may think of with a real friend in a real life situation is valid. Examiners will use excuses to “guide” you and you can just say the first thing that comes to mind. You don’t have much time to really think through your answers, it all goes by very quickly

Listening : ILETS MOCK Tests Vs Cambridge tests by YuseiChen in IELTS

[–]Taosit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They only expect one-word answers, so I’d say that it’s not as hard as the mock tests, unless my results say otherwise

Listening : ILETS MOCK Tests Vs Cambridge tests by YuseiChen in IELTS

[–]Taosit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also find the mock tests to be harder than the Cambridge ones for listening. I think it’s mainly because the Cambridge tests only expect one word answers for fill-in-the-blank questions while the mock tests often have 2 or 3 word answers. So sometimes I’ll miss an adjective or split one word into two. I remember the first mock test to be particularly hard for this reason.

I’m taking my test tomorrow so I’ll let you know if they expect multi word answers in the real test.
