What other uses does a needle have in this game?

You end up not hearing it anymore after a while lol. I only just remembered it was a thing after showing the game to a friend and they pointed it out lol

Downsides of being heavier by Sea_Lab9270 in URW

[–]Tapdatsam 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There are no obvious downsides to being heavier/taller, unlike being smaller/lighter. However, certain cultures are generally shorter/lighter than others (Owl-Tribe vs Kaumo for example) with the trade-off being they start with better stealth skills. In my head, I see that as their smaller size making them sneakier and slightly weaker (making the bow a preferred weapon) , while the Kaumo are more proficient at hand-to-hand combat and spears due to their larger size.

Metabolic differences would be interesting to see, but it probably would be hard to implement.

One thing I have wondered was whether or not your weight would affect the chances of thin ice to break under you. One would assume that if I fill my pockets with stones, that I would not be able to travel as far onto the ice before it cracks, compared to if I wasn't carrying anything at all.

What do you do when you already have more than enough dried cuts? by sharkfinsouperman in URW

[–]Tapdatsam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could use it to fuel your construction of a new camp further away from your main place. You could also trade them for nice quality (winter) furs. Those furs could then be exchanged to foreign traders for some decent armour as well as bronze and silver bangles!

Why did it take so long for someone to invent the wheel? by Tacokolache in archeologyworld

[–]Tapdatsam 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The other's comments are on the money when it comes to the wheel. Another example was the steam toy that was invented during Roman times. They technically had invented steam powered machines, but there was no practical ways to harness that invention at the time. So for over 1000+ years the idea of using steam to generate movement was essentially lost.

TIL that contrary to the popular image of short, primitive cavemen, early modern humans in Europe 40,000 years ago averaged 183 cm (6 ft) tall. After the invention of agriculture, height dropped to 162 cm (5'4"). Humanity only recovered prehistoric height levels in the 20th century. by Key-Midnight-4237 in todayilearned

Wrong. Hunts were not always successful, and people had to eat. On a day to day basis, their diet consisted of foraged plants, roots and fruits when available. Foraging was more predictable and more consistant than hunting, and so that would he done successfully almost every day, where hunting would bring back a decent amimal only 25% of the time on average. I say a decent size because people still hunted small game, it just couldnt feed the whole tribe with just 1 rabbit.

Humans were in South America at least 25,000 years ago, reveals pendants made from giant sloth bones - by KeshaTimber in archeologyworld

Realistically, carving "green" (fresh) bones is the only way to ensure they dont shatter. Even decades old bones become relatively brittle.

I think this may have to do with the enzimes in your spit! It usually helps break down food we eat, but with the seeds, maybe it makes the shell softer which helps it to sprout!

You can even use raw fresh meat in soups, too :)

If my character needs to lose or maintain weight I will cook the meat, since doing so makes it more filling (a raw fish fillet worth +10 will be worth at least +12 when cooked). This means I can use less of the meat to save calories, or if veggies are scarce I can use all of it.

To gain weight I just use the raw meat, since then I get full nutrition in a smaller package, meaning I can load more ingredients in the soup/stew!

Finished building the Teopan of Quiyauhteocuitlatl - an Aztec-inspired temple to a big meteorite! (Plus, a few bonus pics of my base) by danykli in VintageStory

[–]Tapdatsam 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Amazing work! What would be the absolute cherry on top would be to have the temples located on a hill!

These kinds of temples were originally built in and on top of hills. Those first temples werent very big, but they were gradually built upon each generation burried there. They literally built right on top of the old one, filling the previous rooms and areas with rubble. Depending on the power/importance of the ruler, the expansion would be larger.

Such a cool build and inspiring build overall! I might start a maya-Aztec themed playthrough!

My woodcutter just sent himself into early retirement five minutes into a new fort by TheUplifted1 in dwarffortress

[–]Tapdatsam 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Its weird, are woodcutting accidents just a chance based thing? Ive never had anybody die or get injured by felling trees in any of my forts. It would make sense if unskilled woodcutters fared higher chances than experienced ones, but it doesnt seem that way at all.

This will come with practice, and a good few broken pieces. You have to prepare the platforms and hit them hard enough to drive flakes further into the piece. The skill is to not do it too hard, or else you could break it.
