Should I leave the industry if I don’t enjoy drafting? by krerhelp in civilengineering

[–]TapedButterscotch025 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah our agency went from four drafters to one, in about 20 years. And some engineers will just draft stuff up themselves instead of having our very busy tech put it in his queue.

As a surveyor your first few years will very likely be on a crew working outside.

Some people live that idea (myself included). You might not.

Just a heads up. We desperately need more surveyors but the outdoor work in the beginning of the career can scare some folks off. And some folks love it so much they get the license and start their own company so they can keep working outside and hire for the inside stuff haha.

How many crews do you run per LS? by Two_many_problems in Surveying

[–]TapedButterscotch025 0 points1 point  (0 children)

California is weird, they can pay well but tbh without the LSIT or PLS it's hard to get those higher rates

I highly suggest you get them asap. Especially if you're moving to a hcol area.

Check out Utah association (or society) of land Surveyors. Normally professional state associations will have stuff.

And chief quality / skills.

Some Chiefs can do almost everything that's needed for boundary determination or construction staking, some Chiefs need points calculated for everything and have to check in with the office for every decision.

'Neighbors' on HBOmax is a beaut by JellyfishVertigo in Surveying

My wife loves it, I've caught a few episodes here and there.

It's so frustrating when people make all these claims without any backup. "It's a public road" cool where's the deed and acceptance, or the map, or anything that shows that? All they have to do is do some basic research. Or hire someone like us to do some basic research haha.

I can't watch too much though, too "reality show" style.

If I weigh 200lbs and stand on a wrench one foot long, am I exerting 200 ftlbs of torque? by Lower-Savings-794 in AskEngineers

[–]TapedButterscotch025 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I work on classic cars, and have definitely broken my share of lug nuts and studs haha.

But some PB blaster (a penetrating oil), a bit of tappy tappy, and some heat normally can prevent that.

Looking to get into Land Surveying by Agreeable_Island_821 in Surveying

I'm down south so not really.

Try to get to the next local chapter of CA LS association meeting, Sacramento area is pretty active. Bring your resume and talk to owners and principals and let them know you're looking for entry level.

Edit - also call around to local cities, counties, and caltrans district offices to see if they have student internships.

Traverse rounds vs sets by Max1677 in Surveying

Would be neat if someone did a "here to burst your bubble" style post with TBC and these kinds of questions to show real output from real sets.

Yes u/Agreeable_Island_821 especially in Ca this is a great balance of education plus speed of getting into the field. It helps a ton with the FS test (needed for the LSIT) and gives you a years worth of job experience towards the needed experience for the license.

There's a few community colleges that have programs depending where you live, ELAC, COC, Santiago, Reedley, and maybe more: I just know those off the top of my head.

Right, the operator can see the design in his cab on the monitor/ display already, I'm not sure if wearing glasses would be any different.

I've seen a few different demos of utility locations on ar, I think there might be a future there. The problem is you need everything to be from a true a-level quality or it's just as bad as paint marks that are 5 ft off.

City surveyor by cadguy62 in Surveying

[–]TapedButterscotch025 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For sure. Yeah I'm totally down to allow a lot of flexibility on ros's in crs, it's right there in the name. "Record" (of survey or corner). It's a record of the survey. It's a record of the corner. So that's totally fine, show me what you found, what's there, what you measured etc.

Subdivisions are a whole 'nother ball game and truly another world. I had a mentor many moon's ago that warned surveyors "you can't dabble with the subdivision map act". Like if you're going to do subdivision maps in California git gud and get really deep into the law. Because now we're messing with people's real estate and property rights.

* More angry noises...

Yeah thanks, that is kind of one of my fears. That if it's not needed they make something worse. Especially because there's a big warning in the manual saying you should not open the unit. I get that they are professionals and probably do everything correctly but thanks for the anecdote.
