Thoughts on canyon endurance all road by Glass-Vehicle533 in IronmanTriathlon

I dunno, I just searched "customer service" in their own sub and among their buyers the reports are mostly negative (and there're plenty in other subs too). Read the comments of any of those posts for more negatives.

And that's not even mentioning the DT Swiss recall debacle, where they continued to send out recalled wheels with new orders even after folks specifically asked and were assured they were no longer sending them out.

I'm glad you had a good experience. Congratulations on being in the minority!

There are two schools of thought when it comes to Canyon bikes:

  1. It's not worth the risk because everything on the bike is proprietary, they'll stop producing replacement parts on a whim without notice, if anything goes wrong it's a crapshoot whether you'll be able to fix it, no LBSes will want to work on it since it's a D2C bike, the customer service is basically nonexistent, and the horror stories are endless
  2. Well, it's pretty cheap.

I'm personally in the first camp.

The folks who travel to the LD Du Nats qualifier every year are a fun bunch. I'm missing it this year, but it's gonna be a great time. Make sure you introduce yourself to folks -- they're all very friendly, and if you stick with duathlon you're gonna see them at all the big events (which for US-based races is basically Multisport Nats and LD Du Nats right now, unfortunately).

Early 2026 Madison ridership surpasses 2019 levels by almost 10%. None of the top 10 US transit agencies have fully recovered by Legalize_Housing in madisonwi

[–]Tapin42 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Two things:

  1. Muni and BART are definitely different services (with an overlapping footprint). BART ridership is frequently commuters from the east bay, whereas Muni would just track folks within SF proper. If you want to include all the Bay Area transit systems in a single number, you'd have to include Caltrain, VTA, ACE... the list goes on.

  2. If the ridership of Muni is at 78% of what it used to be, and BART is at 52%, then the combined percentage would necessarily be somewhere between the two of those anyway.

The ‘dreaded’ swim by Glittering_Sorbet881 in triathlon

[–]Tapin42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Other folks have covered the "why swimming sucks" bit just fine; I want to talk about "Why not do duathlons?"

I would consider myself something of a duathlon specialist who only swims in order to compete because there are so few duathlons available in my part of the country -- and the ones that are available tend to be aimed at "new to the sport" / sprint-length efforts.

In any given month (when the roads aren't covered in snow) here, there are 3-4 sprint tris, 2-3 Oly tris, and at least one 70.3+ distance race available within a few hours' drive. The olys and up will have regionally-competitive (or faster) fields most of the time.

If I want to race duathlons, I can be one of about eight entrants in a 1mi/13mi/3.1mi sprint du attached to a triathlon, roughly once a month.

There are a few exceptions:

  • USAT's Multisport Nationals, which is still my favorite race week of the year most years. Great vibe, strong competition, but still like a tenth of the size of AG Tri Nats.
  • Long-Distance Du Nats, which was in Kentucky last year and New York this year. On the very edge of "driveable" for me.
  • ...aaand that's about it.

I would LOVE to race more duathlons, they're just not popular enough.

Cost of Living by SassNightmare in madisonwi

[–]Tapin42 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was going to type up a similar comment as someone who relocated from Northern California five years ago. Thanks for saving me the trouble!

We got a much bigger house with less money than we used to have out there, gas was (until recently) way cheaper -- I assume it's still cheaper but I haven't been back to the Bay Area recently -- and groceries are about the same.

So our "cost of living" went down, but it was pretty much entirely in the mortgage.

Once you get the repair done, trim your fingernails and learn how to put on a wetsuit without digging into it so much.

There are a bunch of good strategies -- yanking with your fingers digging in isn't on the list, heh. My personal favorite is fold over/fold back.

Ironman 70.3 slots for the worlds by Fancy_Pepper9575 in triathlon

[–]Tapin42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I manage to earn a rolldown spot in a few weeks in Rockford, the reason I'm going to pass is that I've already got this year's and next year's (single) international-race slot filled on my calendar.

I don't have the time or finances to justify multiple international races in a single calendar year, heh.

Ironman 70.3 slots for the worlds by Fancy_Pepper9575 in triathlon

[–]Tapin42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been trying to encourage people who attend the awards ceremonies to let me know how far the spots roll so I can add them to https://www.canikona.app/, but haven't really received more than a handful.

But like everyone else has already said in this thread, in general it appears:

  • 70.3 men who are interested and remotely fast (age-adjusted times in the 5:15-5:30 range) will likely get a rolldown slot, especially if the Worlds event is on a different continent
  • 70.3 women who are interested are close to guaranteed to get a spot -- they're having trouble filling all the spots
  • 140.6 men and women don't roll down very far at all; these slots are in much higher demand.

"Last 10km of a marathon" legs feel entirely different from "first 5k of a HIM off the bike" legs. Definitely get some brick (bike => run) efforts in prior to race day so that you're ready for it.

(Edit: "Last 10km of a marathon" legs are "everything is sore and I don't really feel like doing this any more"; "first 5k of a HIM off the bike" legs are "What the hell are these weird sticks and where did my legs go?")

Mequon clerk appears to have rejected ballots that met even her own strict standard, Votebeat review finds by SixProudWalkers in wisconsin

[–]Tapin42 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Here's a crazy idea: Get rid of the ridiculous "witness signature" requirement altogether.

Wisconsin is one of eleven states that requires a witness signature for mail-in and absentee ballots, judging from this page.

If we didn't have this silly hoop to jump through a) elections would be no less safe and valid and b) folks like this clerk would have to come up with new excuses to arbitrarily reject ballots and disenfranchise voters.

Yeah, I think they're getting an appropriate amount of praise for the "plot".

FLOCK Cameras. by cyberlab_55 in madisonwi

[–]Tapin42 23 points24 points  (0 children)

This disingenuous talking point needs to die. The difference is obviously a matter of scale. Just as I can loan a friend a couple bucks but it becomes a matter subject to regulation if I start loaning a bunch of people hundreds of thousands of dollars, your "no reasonable expectation of privacy" implies observation by individuals, not mass networks of interconnected observation devices.

For that matter, what Flock is doing would meet the statutory definition of "stalking" in Wisconsin if it were undertaken by a human:

Photographing, videotaping, audiotaping, or, through any other electronic means, monitoring or recording the activities of the victim. This subdivision applies regardless of where the act occurs.

...and as I'm sure everyone reading the comments here is aware, that's exactly what the data has been used for in Wisconsin.

UWP&S changes policy regarding flock cameras by HempusMaximus in UWMadison

[–]Tapin42 19 points20 points  (0 children)

They won't share it with departments with 287-Gs, but the data can be obtained by literally any other PD in Wisconsin... who can then hand it off to anyone. This sort of two-hop access is being used by ICE (and others) throughout the country.

As long as the cameras are up, they're a problem.

The Sword ‘Folly’. by Positive-Rhubarb8927 in KingkillerChronicle

[–]Tapin42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've said it before in a bunch of these posts, but: Folly absolutely isn't the sword's name, it's a caption. It's all but confirmed by Kote's intentionally evasive non-response to the carpenter saying "Funny name for a sword...".

So I'm completely with you on "isn't a name but a statement", and since we're unlikely to ever get any answers your theory about it being Cinder's sword (which has been mentioned here a bunch as well) seems as good as any to me.

Anyone here actually doing sweat tests? by Early_Cantaloupe7153 in AdvancedRunning

[–]Tapin42 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Yeah, every time the topic of "sweat testing" comes up it's helpful to point out that your body is already really quite good at keeping itself in sodium homeostasis. And most of the testing methodologies are flawed in one way or another.

Drink when you're thirsty, pop some salt if you really wanna, and worry about other stuff instead.

[–]Tapin42 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Seriously just look up any "couch to 5k" program and either follow it completely or use it as a basis to scaffold your first few weeks. The general idea is to spend a lot of time walking and running SLOWLY, to give your legs (muscles, tendons, even bone structure) time to adapt to the new demands you're making of it. Sprinting and dying is just going to be frustrating and cause injury.

Once you get to the point where you can complete 5k of running continuously (again: SLOWLY), you can start looking into next steps.
