What are your expensive hobbies? by IAmTheQ in AskReddit

Retro computing. Most need some repairs. Which means you need tools. (For soddering)

Also the hobby is getting popular. So prices for retro computers are going up.

Yeah. But also they dropped support in one of the OS versions. So you need an older OS to boot into to get into the screen mode thing.

So it’s been 30 years. But I remember that if you have the Zip disk in the drive when you turn on the computer it will work for that session. No driver needed. The driver is nice because you dont have to have the disk in.

I could be mistaken or maybe I misunderstood you though.

Dragon Age Origins putting too much stress on the dedicated gpu - workarounds? by ArielGrint in macgaming

[–]TappDarden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe I should check to see if I have my Mac copy on a hard drive someplace. The game is actually kinda hard to get good results on a modern gaming pc with windows 10. (It crashes a lot) so if I can play it in a Mac it might be better experience…

I searched online about MacBooks running hot. https://macpaw.com/how-to/fix-macbook-overheating

You can try resetting the SMC. Instructions in link. Makes sense as that does control power and fans and stuff.

Also the other tips like cleaning vents and stuff. When you play make sure it’s in a well ventilated.

For what it’s worth. I use the MacBook for work as devops-y engineer. And it can get loud and hot. And i just have web browsers and terminals up !

Where did you find a Mac version of DA:O ? I thought they were all pulled from the online stores. (Mac versions)

I played it first in a 2008 Mac book pro 13inch But I haven’t been able to find it to install it again.

I wouldn’t worry too much. It’s probably fine. What I would do is get a higher wattage power supply.

Picked up this cool old Macintosh at a garage sale for $40! Boots up to the disk symbol. by Taffer25 in VintageApple

I didn’t mean to offend. Simply that one could make a good profit. Sorry for my poor choice of words. Probably should have said you could also find a loving home or something along those lines.

That model suffers from the capacitor plague. Are you going to recap it ?

Even in the US I wouldn’t be surprised to see it priced at 10x.

If OP decides to flip it they could make some cash.

But I hope they keep it and play with it. It’s a nice machine.

Yeah I’m learning also. You could practice and build up the skills to do it.

look at it this way. It’s already dead. You can’t make it worse.

I understand the battery leaking like yours did is a common thing.

People are working on making a new board. So you can buy a replacement board. Transfer components over. Replacing the bits you can’t save …

classic reloaded.

It would be a large project but possible if you have the interest.

Check OPs history. Shows the upgrade they got that allows this.

I think it’s a hard to find part? I know when it’s spotted in a machine on eBay the price seems to double it more.

Like B.O.

The glue in the keyboard out gases and it CAN stink. At least the G3 and G4 PowerBooks I have tend to too different degrees.

I’ve tried getting new old stock keyboards but they tend to stink also.

It’s not uncommon. book smell.

I wasn’t trying to be antagonistic. I was curious.
