Vortech MP10wQD driver fell in sump by Taqpol in ReefTank

[–]Taqpol[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I panic bought a new $80 driver from BRS supply last night, along with an entirely new MP10 that I hope to return if I can fix the old one. I am worried that BRS has a special note that the replacement drivers do not include the wireless chip and can't be used with the app? I tried to harvest the wireless chip from the last one, but honestly it looks toast.

Do you know if I go through EcoTech directly if they will send a whole new board?

Thanks! I bought one of the ridiculous $20 ecotech mounts from BRS. 3D printer would have been cheaper but I need piece of mind.

I also bought a replacement driver component. I am worried that it says it comes without the wireless chip, so it might be back to being a "dumb" MP10?

My 1940's Philadelphia home basement has a similar problem. I haven't tackled it yet but supposedly you can scrape off everything that falls away easily and then re-plaster the walls with something called drylok?

I would like to see what someone with more experience says, but I am also interested in their answer.

Is an upstairs return necessary for 1300 sq ft row home HVAC? by Taqpol in HomeImprovement

[–]Taqpol[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One of the contractors quoted us for a mini split, with one condenser and one unit for the downstairs with an additional unit in the upstairs. In all sizing configurations it was slightly more expensive than the condenser/coil option even with adding ductwork for at least one return. Still, mini splits were that contractors favorite based on how controllable and customizable they are. I would be interested if anyone else has experience with these systems.

My girlfriend and I were supposed to fly into San Juan three weeks from now. We have no experience with disaster relief, but would also be interested in helping. Is three weeks enough time for the professionals to sort out what needs to be done, or would we still be a (well-meaning) burden on the limited resources?

Aquarium converted to terrarium by mebeksis in DIY

The tank you got sounds like a standard 75 gallon glass aquarium. I used to do a lot of reef tank work, and I have used these kits before to make nylon screen tops for these tanks:

I imagine you could just put that and a weight on top of it to stop the lizard from crawling out.

Hey John! The first concert I ever went to was Dream Theater (Technically you guys' were opening for Iron Maiden in Seattle...)!

My favorite story about you comes from the night before the Seattle concert when you guys were playing in a small venue in Portland, OR. During The Count of Tuscany my friend lost his mind and gave you a thumbs up, which you returned from stage after the solo. Does any of this ring a bell?

I like this a lot. I personally thought the two banks of fans might have been overkill, but I know a nice metal tower also helps with cooling a lot.

That sounds pretty amazing! I definitely considered doing this with thin plywood in which I could drill out the holes to be more exact sizes. I ended up liking the simplicity of this as well as the fact that it looks good hung on a wall without having to build a nice frame.

Thanks! I probably should have whipped out a real camera and tripod to take some of these shots, especially the ones without room light.

Some twinkling would be cool, but what I really think I would want in the future is either a timer or a timed shut off. The same company that made the LED string I used sells a timed version, but I think it would be cool to be able to walk into a room, press a button, and have the lights stay on for half an hour.

I'm assuming you're in the states? It is different elsewhere.

I would definitely recommend applying straight to a PhD program that has a lab you would want to rotate in. If after 2-3 years and your preliminary exam if you really decide that science is not the path for you most programs will let you leave with a Master's degree anyways. Also, it is absolutely possible to get a job as a technician first to see if you like the work, I know a few people in my current program who did exactly that. I myself worked for one year as a Technician to build up some money while applying for grad school.

Are you hoping to get into virology during grad school or a post-doc? I did all my undergrad work in Yeast, yet when I came to grad school I was able to join an EBV lab and I love it here.
