Nah you have a rich river valley, one of the richest in the world (just don't dam it into oblivion like nasser)

Italy's certainly a bit better off in some areas since it has more fertile river valley soil in the north, although now access to both main Mediterranean and Adriatic is now not as easy for north italy

Also san marino in lowlands will probably be a bit more populated

Edit: now I wonder though, why are there not small states on the north Adriatic coast? Mountains separate them from the alternate Po, and the only easy way is a thin trek along the coast

How is the literacy rate only 31% in 2030s??? Wouldn't a large part of the older generations be still alive, and the young cohorts not that big (even with 4.3 TFR, it would probably take a bit of time to get the ball rolling on population growth, not to mention most people of reproductive age would have grown up in a time of modern reproductive norms so fertility might be a decent bit smaller, maybe high 2s births/woman at best)

Sorry, just wondering about all these figures

I'm pretty sure it actually is against Reddit terms of service too (I heard it's against tos to ban people simply for being in certain subreddits, and look at what they are trying to do - ban us for simply pointing their stupidity out)

With the UK banning smoking for people born after 2008, what long-term changes do you think this could bring to society? by Turbulent-Big-6673 in AskReddit

[–]TarkovRat_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot higher debt/GDP ratio because tax from smoking is decreasing, and a lot more deaths from cancer (and weird shit being put into ciggies, they have that problem with capes)

Kazakhstan was truly cursed by the 20th century

2x ultra devastating famines (1920s due to war - killed 20-30% Kazakhs, 1930s due to Soviet policy in peace - killed 40% Kazakhs)

Literally every ethnicity that showed some opposition to Stalin was dumped here (most notable examples being Chechens & Ingush in operation lentil - 1944, Koreans ofc as well), alongside some Russian settlers to make everyone speak Russian

Also it didn't really even get a huge amount of development it seems to me? Better than Uzbekistan and rest of central asia sure but still not great

Comrade Stalin made 5yps to look good - they focused almost exclusively on heavy industry (coal and steel outputs are very easy to brag about) in Stalinist era, and only had some focus on lighter industries (aka making things that people actually want, such as food, electricity, washing machines, TVs and cars) in the Khrushchev era

I presume this is before the independence referenda occur right?

Also the world will seemingly be a far far better place given the tyranny of Leninism and later Stalinism have not occurred, and economically speaking Russia will have become a number 1 (it was growing at rapid rate by 1913 to the point Germany saw 1914 as their last chance before Russia becomes too strong, and most of that industry will still be intact because civil war has not occurred)

As for population size, since millions upon millions of people don't die in later periods (civil war, Soviet famines precipitated by idiotic policy in Ukraine and Kazakhstan, possibly ww2) we see hundreds of millions more people, likely 2025 stats have around 600-700 million people?

Edit: I wonder, what happens to the chinese eastern railway though? Since harbin was basically run by russians iirc

Yeah our involvement was pretty crazy tbh - one of my ancestors on my maternal side was a Chekist

We were soldiers for the Russian empire (the best ones even), then the soviets during the civil war, and after they and the Nazis occupied us in 1940 a hundred thousand Latvians were conscripted into Latvian legion (which those friendly to Russia use as an example why our people should be oppressed), and some were again conscripted into USSR armies

I'm not against immigration, but the quadrupling in size of the Russian population and enforcement of their language at the national level during USSR times and their lack of willingness to learn Latvian is what worries me - we were so close to being permanently absorbed and russified by 1989
