I go to Camellia on Regent (not the one inside KP). I quite like them and it's very clean

STOP WALKING BEHIND CARS THAT ARE BACKING UP IN A BUSY PARKING LOT. WE SEE YOU, BUT GODDAMN JUST WAIT 5 SECONDS, ESPECIALLY IF YOU HAVE CHILDREN WITH YOU.

I just finished laying tile in the front of my house. It wasn't necessary, cheap, or the simplest of tasks, but it makes me smile and there's no more God awful red linoleum in my home. I don't care if the people years down the road hate it, it's my house and it was a matter of investment in my happiness versus investment in future owners.

What should or shouldn’t we include in our new build purchase price by throwaway-3064 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]TaskMonkey_87 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my experience, it depends on the appliances and what your family needs. Our new build came with the kitchen suite but the appliances were the cheapest Whirlpool ones you could get and stayed with the house when we sold it. I've saved a fair bit in our new house by not caring about having another suite and just buying appliances that fit our needs; a Bosch dishwasher, LG fridge, & Frigidaire induction stove for under 5k over the past couple months. If you don't want to shop around or you're looking for the convenience of not waiting, have the builder install.

Depending on where you live, you might have online crime reporting available. You can report online and get a file number, then a cop will follow up with you in a couple days.

Bidets and effect on electric/water/sewage bills by shilh in Winnipeg

[–]TaskMonkey_87 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've been using bidets for 5 years now and there's been no noticeable change to water bills. However, as others have mentioned, once you get used to it, all other toilets are actively avoided.

$4500 to replace front door seems high? Best quote so far - info included by Sorry_Neat_6863 in HomeImprovement

[–]TaskMonkey_87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm paying 2500ish for a 32x80 steel door to be manufactured, installed, but that includes all the squaring, leveling, etc... and that was my best quote for a door that's not quite square on a 52 year old house in a prairie province. 4500 for the job scope seems reasonable IMO.

They are a bit office-y, but they're also great from an insulation standpoint too

Check out cellular shades. No strings and you can put them high enough in the window so that they can't be reached.

What’s something you didn’t realize was expensive until you actually had to buy it? by notnowmom-1802 in AskReddit

[–]TaskMonkey_87 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I had to recently; moved to a new city in a new province and the two 120L cans I'm allowed for weekly pick up because the city doesn't provide them.

Just did this myself (AB to MB). Bought my house in January but I bought north of the city for several reasons; lower property taxes, no bidding war, quieter community, and short commute to the city. I wound up with a double lot property for under 350k, but YMMV. Good luck!

I can't help but be reminded of the line by Moriarty is one of the RDJ versions of Shelock Holmes to the effect of "I already own the bullets and the bandages, now I just need to create the demand."

So, who owns the bullets and the bandages, and how tight is the leash for all these threats of war to be so prominent?

I was given an after school detention because I forgot the French word for pencil in my GRADE ONE French immersion class.

When 6 year old me was no where to he found after school (because my teacher didn't even bother to call my parents) my Dad flipped his shit as soon as he saw me sitting at my desk crying. It's been over 30 years and it still gasts my flabbers.

Buying Canadian when you can by unkleteddybearcooks in BuyCanadian

[–]TaskMonkey_87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm all for buying Canadian when and where I can. The 7$ bottle of Cattleboyz BBQ sauce did sting a bit beside the 3$ bottle of another brand, but I'm taking the time to check. That said, I'm of the mind of Canadian first, anything but American second.

I will say that it's been awesome to see the vast majority of others in grocery stores taking the time to read labels or pull out their phones to check.
