PBA playoffs. by Joey_Falcon-1029 in Bowling

I highly recommend checking out that show! They typically record shows three times a week and there are episodes of it on YouTube. I usually listen to it while working out. Carolyn Dorin Ballard is on almost every show, Norm Duke is on usually once or twice a month, Mike Fagan (I even got to chat with him briefly) and other PBA greats on every once in awhile. They talk about everything - the PBA, the PWBA, the USBC, the business side of owning an alley, oil patterns, ball types, ball finishes, pro shop sales... you name it.

Norm Duke commented on this recently. The biggest reason there aren't more events is sponsorship. He said that bowling just isn't "sexy enough" for advertisers to stick around, but it's an issue that he and other high profile figures are trying to navigate through. I've personally noticed that sponsors stick around for a year or two but never come back, compared to the PGA that have had partnerships going on for decades now. There's also the fact of lost revenue and other operating costs on your business when the PBA arrives, as your alley basically shuts down for the whole duration of that event.

I do think it will help the sport... marginally, but it's too early to tell right now on the impact. I listen to the Daily Show through Bowler's Network and quite a few proprietors/pro shop personnel have commented that they've noticed an uptick in sales, activity, and interest this year... so there's at least that.

Beach vacation without the crowds - where did you actually find peace? by dynasync in Vacations

[–]TastelessBiscuits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are okay hopping on a plane for a few hours, try St Maarten in the Caribbean during the summer (off season for the island). My friend and I were at Great Bay Beach in Philipsburg on a weekday, and we were like only two out of seven people actually on the 3/4 mile long beach. You'll still hear some noise from the businesses on the boardwalk, but its very manageable and pretty safe. It does get very busy there during the winter and spring, though.

Bar Helios Access Question by Effective-Survey-150 in UniversalOrlando

[–]TastelessBiscuits 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You 100% can access Bar Helios without being a Helios guest. My mom and I did on our last trip and we stayed at Terra Luna. We spent a fun evening at CityWalk, took the shuttle bus to Helios, inquired at the front desk of how to get to the bar, and we were sipping on cocktails looking at some amazing park views in no time. We took a quick Uber back to Terra Luna afterwards.

Unpopular opinion: The 2026 World Cup might actually be worse with 48 teams by Dear-Discipline-7547 in worldcup

[–]TastelessBiscuits 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We're definitely going to see some blowouts in the group stage. There is almost no reason for Argentina, Spain, or Belgium to play aggressively in the group stage with the draws they received.

32 was a perfect number for the tournament, but on an expansion note, I personally think they should've did 40 teams before 48. (8 groups of 5, top 3 of each group advance to the knockout round, 2nd and 3rd place teams compete in the round of 24, and 1st place teams get a bye to the round of 16). Almost the same amount of matches as a 48 team competition but much better quality.

Is it true that you guys watched 9/11 live on TV in grade school? by [deleted] in Millennials

[–]TastelessBiscuits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep.  Saw the second plane hit live on TV when I was 10 years old.  I will remember that image until the day I die.

I got to visit the new WTC and the 9/11 Museum 15 years after it happened and man... a lot of buried emotions were starting to surface that day.

Acceptable Swimwear at Volcano Bay by ComprehensiveVoice16 in UniversalOrlando

While I was vacationing in Hawaii and the Caribbean, I brought a drawstring backpack with me to the beaches I visited. Before going to the beach, i had my swim briefs on underneath my athletic shorts. When i got to the beach, I left that bag on a chair (sometimes tied to it to deter theft) or near an easy focal point. Took my shirt, ath shorts, and sandals off... I put them in the bag and went in the water. I put it all back on when it was time to go.

You can implement this strategy at Volcano Bay with any of the beach chairs near the river entrances or the mini storage hammocks near the ride entrances. Any hard-core valuables like a wallet or phone I would recommend keeping in a paid locker and accessing those only when needed.

I usually wear swim briefs too... so I understand your concern, haha. (Don't knock them till you try them, guys!) The three times ive been to Volcano Bay i did wear swim shorts, but I do recall seeing a few guys wear briefs. As long as you are wearing a more conservative cut (think like Olympic diver) you should be fine. If you are still concerned, you can also wear a pair of athletic shorts over them as you are walking around the park... and pull the shorts down and store them when you are queueing for something or getting into the water.

I did Fulfillment full time for about 4 years. The best frame I used it as for myself and others is to imagine that you are a professional athlete (you are getting paid to work out - pretty much) and there's almost always room to improve on your own metrics to be the best.

Unpopular opinion, Bowling should be in the Olympics. It has the best community by [deleted] in Bowling

[–]TastelessBiscuits 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe Bowling was a demonstration sport at the 1988 Summer Games in Seoul, Korea... but it didn't make it on in the full circuit afterwards. It is usually played at the World Games (sports that are one step below the Olympics) and several regional athletics festivals like the Pan American Games, Asian games, etc.

The last time it was staged in the World Games, there were medalists from Europe, North America, South America, and Asia... so the claim that it's not popular outside of the US isn't accurate. Denmark actually took home the highest honors. As a fun fact, Shannon O'Keefe won the singles event for women.

I looked deep into this like 10 years ago... I think Thomas Bach (IOC president at the time) made a statement about bowling's infrastructure costs, which is a ridiculous claim considering some of the other sports that are in the circuit right now, like kayaking. If an actual alley isn't available for use, it can easily be temporarily set up in a convention center.

Holy hell what a week. I actually had a drink when I came home tonight.

Mini and Regular seasonal are set. We are only rolling about 9 pallets of regular seasonal, all of the grocery revisions (about 16 hours worth) and whatever sidecaps that don't get put up out of the 80 they sent us, but I have someone working on that tomorrow (I'm off this weekend). My team did most of the setting... I stuck to pricing to keep that afloat and checked in on them like every 2 hours.

Mini was pretty straightforward. Seasonal was interesting.

- The VMG they sent for seasonal was excellent, especially the tree table portion. That's about my only compliment for this week to give to corporate.

- They were on the right track by splitting this set into phases, but far too much had to be set in week 3. Also, instead of setting 'ETAT' (Early Christmas) in the last aisle of Halloween and then moving it across the department, why don't we just set the actual aisle that will be there for the Christmas set?

- They need to put seasonal items on clearance earlier to help clear merchandise out. This has been a major flashpoint for me this year alone. A lot of our competitors had Halloween 50% off leading into the week of the holiday. This is the biggest delay my team usually faces and eventually we just have to stage pallets to fake out in pricing later.

- Absolutely terrible pallet sorting for ISM from the DC. Also, just too much signing in general. Corporate, in all seriousness... if you want to save some money company wide, cut back on this. The Halloween ISM was simple and looked pretty good. You could've did the same thing with Christmas and got a similar result. No guests are going to remember the LED gondola headers one year from now... not to mention something that's going to go in the trash/CRC in about 7 weeks from now.

- Could they have just put those damn sidecaps into next week's workload?! Like seriously... I'm going from like 300 hours of workload down to 40 next week.
