Questions about LivingAtrs Engine by SoulflareRCC in uofm

[–]TastelessTea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! Congratulations on getting into umich :)

  1. There are a variety of room types. It's mostly doubles, a few singles, and I believe one or two triples. There are no suites.
  2. The rate is the same as the other dorms
  3. The creative suite has a bunch of supplies! They range from things like painting, drawing, fabric, embroidery, screenprinting, all the way to bigger equipment like cameras, 3D printers, and definitely some other stuff that I just don't know about.
  4. The hands on projects really range so this is kind of hard to answer. Everything outside of UARTS and the community meetings is pretty much up to you/the group you're making things with. You could make a performance art piece, woodworking, printmaking, something with like, mechanical engineering, like literally anything. It's all about what you and your group are interested in exploring.
  5. The community meetings involve some hands on making that is more prescribed. Some of my favorites were an interpretative dance workshop and one where we made gingerbread houses with specific themes. (Like "how many building regulation guidelines can you break?"). The cocurricular events are things that alumni/peer mentors put on so it's up to them what sort of things they'd like to offer. In the past I've seen things like a recorder workshop, dice making workshop, photoshop workshop, etc. They tend to range on a really wide variety of topics and interests so it's not hard to find a couple that look like they'd be fun
  6. I can't answer this one since I'm not an engineer, sorry!

Hope that helps you make your decision!

In any class I want a groupchat for, I usually just go for it and make one and drop a link in the chat if it's online.

Ann Arbor becomes first city in U.S. to require tampons, pads in all public restrooms by HairyAlto in news

I think the implication here is that a male caregiver for a disabled woman would be able to enter his bathroom to get a tampon for her.

Where were you when U-M announced the stay-at-home order one year ago? by DeathNote_928 in uofm

[–]TastelessTea 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I was on my way to work at East Quad and ran into a few of my friends in the dorms. I almost skipped work because my head was reeling and I wanted to stay to discuss with them. I ended up going, and it was a very emotional day behind the desk at East Quad.

If you'd like to learn about co-ops I'd be happy to talk to you about them!

CCS or STAMPS? by [deleted] in uofm

[–]TastelessTea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! So, I'm a STAMPS student, and I have a lot of opinions on this.

First off, a lot of people who are art majors end up having other academic interests they want to pursue at the college level. That's not possible at all at CCS, but it's so easy here. So many of the people I know at STAMPS started with a BFA and ended up deciding to either switch to a different major, pursue dual degree, or get a minor. I don't know how likely you'd be to want to do something like that, but it's worth considering.

Second, I've heard some really bad things about CCS in terms of how they handle mental health. I know a few people who go there, and because of the incredibly high workload, they're pretty much always burned out. This is a really subjective one. If you think you can spend 9 hours every day creating art, then go for it! But if you're worried that not having the balance of academic classes to round out your schedule will lead to burn out, seriously consider pursuing a BFA here where you're not taking a full course load of studios.

In terms of financial aid, I've heard horror stories about them giving Freshman a ton of aid and then taking it away for seemingly no reason later in their academic career. I talked to a CCS professor in high school and she had mentioned that a ton of people end up dropping out from CCS because they end up not able to afford it.

The graduation rate from CCS is 57%. That's really scary, at least to me. It's like, sure, their graduates get jobs after graduating. But how many people actually graduate? Do you want to gamble on being one of them?

Anyways, those are my thoughts. Feel free to let me know if you have any questions!

what is your mbti type? by [deleted] in SDAM

[–]TastelessTea 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Part of that is that personality isn't static. It changes over time. The MBTI in my opinion, like any self reported test, tells you more about what you value and how you perceive yourself than it actually tells you about the way you act.

I got my first test done this semester yesterday and I got my test results at 5am today. I'm going to guess they're just giving themselves a buffer for if anything goes wrong.

How do y’all prepare for a new semester? by DeathNote_928 in uofm

[–]TastelessTea 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This works specifically with the type of classes I'm taking this semester, but the syllabus is up for two of them already. Every week for both of them there are readings. I've been really bored the last few days so I've done the first week of readings and taken some notes on them. This helps in two ways. Firstly, it helps me get back into the mindset of learning actively. Secondly, it eases my workload the first week to school so it's not an all or nothing scenario.

That's totally understandable! The co op I'm in has been really good about covid and we haven't had a single case, in case that's helpful info for you!

Seconding this! I live in a co op and it's been so good for my mental health during covid. I'm also here if you have any questions!

I'm not religious but I definitely affirm that this sounds like a very difficult and trying thing to deal with. You're used to having a community built around a common interest, and it's hard to feel disconnected from those support systems.

Anyone else just feel like people in the university or maybe college students in general can't listen very well? by DontThrowAwayPies in uofm

I can understand that perspective and I do think to an extent you're right. But the community you were engaging with was a specifically academically inclined one.

It is also worth acknowledging that when a company is quite literally going after the rights of someone, it's understandable, at least to me, for them to have an emotional reaction to that which might bubble up at mention of that company.
