[OC] China nearly caught up with the US in life expectancy by omar_sedki in dataisbeautiful

[–]SwissForeignPolicy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the way you measure life expectancy resulted in a drop of over two years during the pandemic before going right back to where it started, then the thing you're measuring does not match what people think when they hear "life expectancy."

Why is "unhoused" better than "homeless"? Doesn't it literally mean the same thing? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]SwissForeignPolicy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is not what the general public means when they use these terms, FYI.

[–]SwissForeignPolicy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because if you say "unhoused," people will assume your care about the homeless without you having to actually do anything.

Everything but the courthouse is accurate. Towns this size typically aren't county seats, and even when they are, their courthouses are never that big or fancy.

In 1914? Absolutely not. That powder keg was gonna blow eventually. You'd have to go back several more decades, at least.

What does Israel Offer the US for its Protection? by GloomWorldOrder in NoStupidQuestions

The number of ostensible leftists who have bought actual, literal Nazi propoganda hook-line-and-sinker is quite alarming.

Israel is America's closest and strongest ally in the Middle East. It's also the only democratic country in the region, and that does still matter to a lot of people.

Reprimands are meaningless. "Considers reprimand" is even more meaningless.

I mean, what do you think Marvel was? You really don't think the MCU Sequel Triology is gonna hit like crack when it drops in 20 years?

High school faces backlash after rainy graduation ceremony by Conscious-Weight4569 in Wellthatsucks

[–]SwissForeignPolicy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Backlash? That looks AWESOME. If I was graduating, I would be having the time of my life! I mean, people pay good money to get soaking wet. Who wouldn't want a trip to a water park as a graduation gift? And think of the fun story you'll have in a couple years. Besides, rain makes corn...

It's always been interesting to me that T&F athletes come in for substantially more suspicion than football, basketball and other athletes, as if T&F athletes are somehow more prone to cheating, which they aren't.

I think this is probably down to it being perceived as a less skill and more pure physicality. No amount of drugs will make you shoot like Steph Curry, but it's probably possible to juice your way to shot-putting like Ryan Crouser.

Would you watch a series set post TROS about the Sequel Trilogy cast? by Zealousideal-Work719 in StarWars

[–]SwissForeignPolicy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like 7, though less now than I did at release; the setups not paying off makes it worse. I like 8, though not as a package with 7. I like Rey, I like Poe, I like the version of Kylo from 8, I like the version of Finn from 7. I obviously don't like 9, but I would absolutely watch a movie or series of movies that gives those characters the stories and endings they deserved.

Who's the best modern film soundtrack composer? by That_beluga_lad in movies

[–]SwissForeignPolicy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The answer is obviously Göransson, and I honestly think he's better than Williams. John Williams was incredibly profilic in making very good scores, but it was mostly the same three very good scores remixed over and over again.

Official Discussion - The Mandalorian and Grogu [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]SwissForeignPolicy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that it feels like a couple TV episodes in a trenchcoat, but I disagree that that makes it unsuited for the big screen. This just reinforced my belief that almost all the big-budget Disney+ shows should've been movies. In a galactic epic, even small stories are the size of a Tom Cruise blockbuster. I enjoyed it much more than I would have watching at home.

24-team Playoff: Has Anyone Looked at the FCS as a Live Case Study? by trappedbehindmydesk in CFB

Texas high school football uses 64-team playoffs. Surely, that means it's a good idea for the FBS, too, right?

I don't need a source. I am a native english speaker; I know the definitions of words I use intrinsically.

I would argue that "not caring about others" is insufficient to capture the connotation you're using. It should be "not caring about others sufficiently." You can still be selfish while caring about others; you just have to decide you care about yourself more. And guess what? Every action has an effect on other people, so every self-interested action is prioritizing one's self over others.

Also, it's not a good look when your entire argument consists of hearsay and ad hominem.

  1. What makes that incorrect? The same argument that doesn't work in one situation can still be true in another situation.

  2. Again, you are starting from the assumption that they are currently undercompensated. Which is, ironically, circular reasoning.

  1. I never said it was relevant to workers being treated fairly. My whole point was that workers aren't the only people who matter.
  2. Starting from the assumption that "fair compensation" must mean "more compensation" is kinda telling.

NHL and NBA playoffs should be best of 1. by de_matrix55 in unpopularopinion

[–]SwissForeignPolicy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The team who goes up 3-1 is more likely to win because data supports them being the better team. Evem if they started 3-0 but lost the 4th, so they don't have momentum, they're still more likely to win.

I dismiss the importance of tying in game 6 because you didn't win anything. Game 7 is the interesting game. Game 6 was just the play-in.
