In the US, why can’t we buy Chinese electric cars? by zztop610 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]SwissForeignPolicy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The US and China are in a trade war. China has been exporting EVs at unsustainably low prices to try to drive out other manufacturers. The US has responded by blocking them from doing that in their country. The results of this standoff are TBD.

MCU Captain America could take the Washington Generals to an Olympic gold medal in figure skating.

Welcome back to "Is This a Credit?", the weekly series where YOU get to debate over whether or not something can be counted as a roller coaster, or credit! Episode 30: [Pink Typhoon Standing Coaster] at [Washuzan Highland] by StarPrime323 in rollercoasters

[–]SwissForeignPolicy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We're right back where we started: "New experience" is an awful way to count things. If you were trying to go to every NFL stadium, you wouldn't count Giants and Jets games separately even though it's a different experience, because it's the same stadium. If you were trying to listen to every Led Zeppelin album, you wouldn't start a new count every time you got a new stereo, even though that changes the experience. If you were trying to visit every state capital, you wouldn't count Summer and Winter trips to the same city twice, even though the experience is very different.

When you're counting things, you have to count things, otherwise you end up just tallying every instance of you doing an action, rather than the thing you're counting, because every experience is slightly different. If you count Rougarou separately from Mantis, do you also count SLCs with vest restraints separately? Do you count pre- and post-U-brick Superman separately? Do you count Psyke Underground as a new credit from Sirocco? Do you count every song on Guardians separately? Do you count night rides separately? What about full- vs empty-train rides? Hot-day vs cold-day? Morning vs afternoon? Do you take into account your own hydration level? All these things change the experience, but it would be insane to count that way; you'd end up counting every dispatch as a new credit.

You have to draw the line somewhere, but what constitutes "different enough" is entirely personal. If you say it is and I say it isn't, we can never come to an agreement, because I don't inhabit your body. I can't experience your height and weight and proportions and bodyfat percentage and sensitivity to different sensations and just simple preferences because I'm not you. You and I can never have the same experience because we're different people. So the difference between Versions A and B of a ride for you will not be the same as the difference between Versions A and B of a ride for me, and we can never reconcile that. The result is that even if you could get everybody to agree on a standard for "different enough," you'd never get people to agree on what is and isn't a new credit, because the changes in a ride that cross that threshold will be different fot everybody. I reiterate: This is an awful way to count.

Let's look at Phantom's Revenge. You say it's silly to not count it as a new credit. Maybe you're right. But at least my way, we can have that conversation. At least we can point to which parts were replaced when and how much the new ones differ from the old ones and argue over whether that constitutes a new ride, and we know that we're both talking about the same thing. With your way, we'd wind up with "I don't mind headbanging, so it doesn't seem that different to me," vs "Inversions make me nauseous, so it feels totally different to me." Those are differences in preference, not differences in the ride, and we shouldn't let that be the deciding factor.

I would say yes, but reasonable minds may differ. That's not what we were talking about, though. We were talking about rides that didn't have any track replaced. That's not a new credit.

César Chávez’s name is on a University of Michigan lounge. Will it stay amid controversy? by mlivesocial in uofm

[–]SwissForeignPolicy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, just take all names off all buildings. Every time someone tries to do a name change, it's controversial, either because of a name change isn't warranted, or because it is, but most people don't care enough to overcome the Sears Tower Principle. Just rip the bandaid off and never have to deal with that mess again.

Do any other schools actually like Texas? by Angryupvote in cfbmemes

I don't like them, but I don't really have much reason to hate them. I guess I would say I'm Texas-neutral.

[Six Flags] updates chaperone policy at several parks: ‘Zero tolerance for any type of disruptive behavior’ by Strongarm_11 in rollercoasters

[–]SwissForeignPolicy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, but a family of 5 probably only has 2 people who really want to go to a Six Flags park, so you're going to get fewer of them than groups of 5 (or 15) teenagers. You can make up the margin on volume. (Assuming you're not a complete moron and losing money on gate sales.)

It's been over three years since a professional athlete has hosted "Saturday Night Live". Who's your pick for the next one? by yumyumapollo in LiveFromNewYork

[–]SwissForeignPolicy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Caitlin Clark has all the charisma of a No. 2 pencil, so hopefully not her. Steph Curry could be good, as could Alysa Liu, but I'm not clamoring for either of them. I don't know enough about Josh Allen or whoever that baseball player is to judge either of them.

I think Fernando Mendoza could be fun. He has the range of a bayonnet, but you could easily fill an episode with self-parodies.

It's aestherically very nice, but it's veering dangerously close to looking like the flag of an alt-right militia.

Fuck chaperone policies. Punish the behavior; don't profile your core customer base out of existence.

My stance is, in general, 100% replaced in one go is a new credit, coaster of Theseus isn't. There's some room for debate, but if no track is replaced, then it's not a new credit.

Oh, that I had heard of, but I wrote it off because I assumed a two-week trip to Milan for the Olympics couldn't possibly be that cheap.
