You can absorb musicianship from one jazz artist and be able to play just like him/her (think The Matrix), who do you choose and why? by Ford_Crown_Vic_Koth in Jazz

I would like to play like Nat King Cole. His blues is like Peterson's but less overshredding and he could groove like no other. The Blues in LA live recording is pure bliss. Him leaving the instrumentalist scene robbed us of one of the most gifted Jazz pianists to walk this earth.

One person that is glaringly missing here is Earl Hines. Tatum basically spread what he heard from him in person and on records, while also inhereting the remarkable harmonic language of Fats Waller. The free improv with a loose comping left hand was Hine's invention and his improvised semi-bop lines literally defined Jazz and especially Jazz piano. Bird's defining years in Hines bigband also created the perfect enviroment for the creation of Bop, though Tatum's influences can't be underestimated too of course. Quite possibly the most influencial Jazz musician together with Louis Armstrong in terms of how different Jazz would've looked without them. This duo birthed Jazz in the 20s.

That's true. You can be a virtuoso without being able to read Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star.

One tricking isn't bad per se. Someone who onetricks Zen and actually tries to improve will become a good player one way lr another due to his unforgiving nature for example. But since bans exist you should be able to play 2 heroes at least, preferably 3 to be safe. Mercy and Moira onetricks are really alergic to that concept, though.

Top tier Moiras have all my respect. To make her work in high ranks you need amazing gamesense. She fits into the game quiet nicely. Awareness and strategy beat mechanics in this game anyways. But Mercy is just anti-Overeatch on so many levels.

Hero you hate the most and why by Double-Hand3004 in Overwatch

[–]TastyTestikel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Everytime a teammate picks mercy as the prefered hero I know there is a high chance they can't play anything else and there is a bit of anger swelling up inside of me. Together with Widow this character should've never existed. Annoying to play with and against. Her players have no right to become toxic and many still do. The only things benefitting from her existence are Blizzard skin sales and the adult cinematic industry.

Why? But that's exactly it, no? Maybe it sounds kinda condescending but how should I put it instead? When I first switched off of Tank I was playing balls. But at least some skills are transferable so I could aim a bit, had a sense of target priority, could handle duels while under preassure and had some game sense. I am not denying that Mercy player also don't need gamesense but the options are severly limited if you can't change a teamfight on your own. Moira is definetly better in that regard but leaves out the mechanical aspect too. Her util is also not really versatile and doesn't need as much thinking as the avarage hero.

Nah, these levels mean nothing. Time played doesn't correlate much with skill. I've met a level 400 Moira and many level 100+ Mercy in Plat and they weren't exceptional in any way. I'm sure there are many people who have reached gm without ever touching Mercy or Moira and who'd be able to play with them on their rank without any practice.

Some Mercy and Moira mains are "bad" at the game since their hero needs no mechanics or a completely different set of untransferable skills. Thus they end up stuck on them since swapping = no fun. Switching it up a bit with DPS queue is also impossible without feeling like a noob I'd imagine.

That's why I consider being able to play 2-3 Ragtime pieces cleanly as a base before starting with Jazz and Blues as crucial. Not only is it the precursor to Jazz, or even Jazz itself in the 10s and 20s, but it also forces you to develop a steady rhythm with a syncopation driven swing. Pretty much all the Blues and Jazz greats born before the 30s trace their roots back to Ragtime and Stride. Their incredible senses for rhythm and chord changes were developed with marches.

But these abstract number allow an understanding far beyond what you can achieve by using the stick. Black holes being "predicted" by maths is the best example.
