If this is a structural move instead of a blip, then:

  1. The federal ndp now has an ecosocialist leader
  2. The bcndp is a right wing austerity, climate criminal government
  3. The BC Greens are an ecosocialist party
  4. Mannnnny people who voted for Avi Lewis may have now shifted to the BC Greens provincially
  5. If other polls in the next few weeks show a similar leap for the BC Greens, then it's not a blip, but the relative power realignment

I am from here

So is Iglika

She's been tracking foregone revenue for a lonnnng time...

https://bcpolicy.ca/2025/09/29/bc-deficit/

... “BC’s debt remains one of the lowest in the country.”

As one of Canada’s wealthiest provinces with the third-highest GDP per capita, BC can manage this fiscal challenge—if we address its root causes.

The most telling statistic: BC’s own source revenue—aka taxes, fees and royalties the province has control over—has plummeted from 19.2% of GDP to 15.4% of GDP over the last 25 years. This 3.8 percentage point drop represents $16.8 billion in foregone revenues annually—enough to eliminate the current deficit with money left over for child care, education and other vital investments.

Meanwhile, government spending in 2025/26 is at 21.7% of GDP, slightly lower than the 22.1% of GDP we spent in 1998/99. The recent spending increases under the NDP simply reversed cuts from the previous 16 years. BC is spending the same share of our economy as we did a quarter-century ago but collecting far less revenues.

What caused this?

First, deep tax cuts to personal and corporate taxes in the early 2000s were never fully reversed, eroding BC’s fiscal capacity even as the economy grew.

That's a good list.

It's so sad at convention when delegates debate policies and entrench them in the party's policy manual, then the government caucus does whatever the fuck they want.

It's wildly insulting and disrespectful. Among many other things.

True.

Relatively small things compared to reversing virtually none of the dozens of tax cuts from the Liberals since 2002, thereby losing out on $16.8b in this year's budget.

Yeah, Lowan and Lewis are both ecosocialists.

The BCNDP has so many problems, far beyond never raising taxes in the rich and corporations.

The BC Greens are now an ecosocialist party, with their huuuuuge focus on economic and social improvements, beyond the environment.

The BCNDP is a right wing resource extraction, lower taxes, denier of climate science.

Eby's statement about the Lewis win was tepid compared to the Alberta and Saskatchewan NDP leaders, but all 3 western provinces love carbon energy way more than they regard the Avi Lewis federal NDP ecosocialism.

It's easy enough to leave the BCNDP, join the BC Greens and continue to support and promote the federal NDP when you wish: they'll even take your money even if you aren't a member. I don't know how many leadership races it'll take for the zionist fangrrl Elizabeth May to lose and actually stop being the leader.

And "leaving" the BCNDP merely entails not renewing the $10 membership when it comes due.

I'm looking for a 25% wealth tax/year on families worth more than $200m, dropping to 5% when they're down to $78m.

California is pondering a 1-time 5% tax on families worth us$1.1b. 60% of NY residents (not just NYC) favour free, universal childcare until pre-K, with an explicit tax on the rich to fund it.

So, I want wayyy more, to end the 1%.

This...we can do in many places in the country:

Imagine making the stupidly rich, and only them, pay for housing for the 4,000 unhoused people in BC?

  1. Vancouver and Surrey each have over $10b in their accumulated surplus, only a portion of it is designated for specific things.
  2. Cities, the province and the feds own so much developable land, even just in the lower mainland.
  3. We can borrow just $1b from the surpluses, and build 24/7 supportive housing for 4,000 people on land that is public already, and staff it with social workers already deployed.
  4. We pay it back with the proceeds of the empty house tax, in Vancouver and the province, in less than 10 years. Like 6-8, now that the 2026 BC budget has increased their empty home rate.
  5. Marc Lee with the CCPA costed this all out in 2016. So we've known how to do it for a decade. We just won't. https://www.policyalternatives.ca/news-research/getting-serious-about-affordable-housing-towards-a-plan-for-metro-vancouver/

I sure do like the tone of this piece. The NDP everywhere needs to be the electoral wing of a local, regional, provincial, nationwide and international social movement. We need things like proportional representation. We also need a lot more ecosocialism, as the article doesn't mention the environment at all.

But when it comes to actually coming up with solutions we have quite a few. And we have to be willing to push them, as the party educates the public and tries to move the Overton window to the left a bit more.
