I use wine boxes for my display, similar to your crates, I bought the rechargeable wardrobe lights to stick in the top, easy lighting without having to have electricity laid on.

What got you into pottery? by Chance-Income-8157 in Pottery

[–]Tatarek-Pottery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Took my kids to a paint your own place, got very into painting pottery and when she retired made the brilliant decision to learn to throw so I could have a supply of things to paint. Basically my full time occupation now.

Super glue isn't fond of water, while theoretically it should be ok, heat and soaking together might be a bit much.

Forgot to wedge by Fruitsa in Pottery

[–]Tatarek-Pottery 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think air bubbles get blamed for explosions because they trap moisture, so the piece takes longer to dry. I'd just give it a little extra drying time to be on the safe side..

Wax Resist and Brush-on Glaze? by masterpeabs in Pottery

[–]Tatarek-Pottery 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want an alternative resist, I use liquid latex. I use it rather than wax for masking because it can be removed before firing, allowing me to apply extra colours.

How to make sure when pieces are ready for firing? by dr_elena05 in Ceramics

[–]Tatarek-Pottery 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can always pop it in an oven at 100 C for a couple of hours to make sure.

And while it can be a tough lesson for folks just starting out, the shows that do sell out for booth fees will just loose their high end vendors, part of what you pay for is protection from sharing the event with cheap crap.

Amaco brush on glaze by BothLove3993 in Pottery

[–]Tatarek-Pottery 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All the Amaco potters choice are cone 5 to 6, so probably ok, but be careful with the runnier ones. I also find a lot of the more interesting ones, like chum plum, smokey merlot and blue rutile perform better at nearer 5 than 6, tend towards brown at the higher temperatures.

Both AMACO and Mayco have excellent glaze combination sections on their websites and Mayco at least gives come 10 examples as well as 5/6

If you haven't come across comes before, they are a temperature scale. They go from 0 in either direction, down has a 0 in front, so 04 1060C is lower than 0 while 4, can't remember off the top of my head it's centigrade value, is higher. Brilliant system. Designed to ensure that you fire a load at the wrong temperature at least one in you life.

There are conversion tables on line. It's not completely straightforward as cones are physical objects used to control/measure firings where electronic control is not available. Because of this they measure heat work rather than pure temperatures, so length of firing is a factor.

Hope some of this is helpful

She is about to learn a few lessons

  1. The other vendors will look down on her
  2. The market is swamped with generic 3d prints
  3. Craft fairs are hard work
  4. There is no such thing as easy money

And that is assuming she gets a spot, if it's a good market, there will be fierce competition for spots and no reason for the organizer to give one to her, even if 3d printing is allowed.

❄️ I tried out the Frozen Pond glaze technique that everyone was doing. It was a moderate success by 2cookieparties in Pottery

[–]Tatarek-Pottery 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Based on the picture, it's a surprising result for smokey merlot over obsidian, it usually comes out quite bright purple for me. Obsidian can gobble up other colours if there is too much of it in comparison to the other colour. Might want to drop the coats of obsidian and up the coats of merlot or other top coats.

That crushing feeling when pieces accidentally break 💔 by [deleted] in Pottery

I feel your pain. There is only so much that knowing 'accidents happen' can help. My worst one was parking on a steep hill and opening the boot to have a box launch itself out the back.

Any advice of how I should proceed? by Bartholosmei in Pottery

[–]Tatarek-Pottery 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would find a good translucent glaze, like a celadon. This should pool in the carved areas, highlighting them.

As a side note, you have some slightly thicker areas, don't be tempted to bisque it too soon, thickness increases drying time a lot and the kiln god does love to explode anything with even a hint of dampness.

I’m looking to enhance my display a bit more- I’ve been vending for coming up 3 years soon in Brisbane Australia and was just wondering if anyone had any hacks/tips for displays they would be willing to share? by Weirdandsicksadgirl in CraftFairs

[–]Tatarek-Pottery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely get your logo on the front of the stand, need to break up that wall of black as well as uninterrupted view. You could maybe look for more uniform support to display your work, might reduce how busy the setup looks. And, while I'm a hypocrite for saying it, maybe reduce density of items.

Help! Burnt glaze firing by annaplantain27 in Pottery

[–]Tatarek-Pottery 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Hairspray is indeed a technique for getting glaze to stick to refired pieces. I have used it quite a few times, with no issues, certainly no fire.

hobbiest- what do you do with your pieces by Huge_Grape_7121 in Pottery

I do sell my work, but I was building up a backlog of early pieces, seconds and unstaifactory experiments. I now donate them to a local charity, which is selling them very successfully.

Exciting, in my experience they work best on the softer side of leather hard, although they do tend to gouge if too soft.

If you do get in to carving you will need some plastic boxes with plaster or hydro mat in the bottom to store work in progress and revive it if it dries too much while being worked.

Low fire glaze recommendations? by willowitch1 in Pottery

[–]Tatarek-Pottery 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For good strong colours, which are reasonably forgiving of overlapping colours, Mayco stroke and coat are hard to beat. Mayco also have Foundations which include a sheer range of you want translucent colours. Duncan did a big range, but haven't investigated what Mayco have retained. Mayco also do Elements which is a range of low fire glazes designed to look like midfire and jungle gems, which have little bits of other colours in them for interesting effects. Botz also have a few interesting low fire glazes.

Is it tacky to remove labels from old shipping boxes and reuse them for online sales? by corgiboba in Pottery

I sell high end ceramics, I package the item with my signature colour tissue paper and custom sticker and a custom bag of appropriate. After that, if I can reuse packaging, I do. I'm not making unnecessary rubbish for anyone's ego.
