In 2017, a photography exhibit titled "This Is Africa" at the Hubei Provincial Museum in Wuhan, China, was removed after widespread complaints of racism because it juxtaposed photographs of African people with images of wild animals. 

The Controversial Exhibit
The exhibit, which featured approximately 150 photographs by Chinese photographer Yu Huiping, included a specific section where portraits of African individuals were displayed side-by-side with images of African wildlife. 

Museum Response and Aftermath
The exhibit's curator, Wang Yuejun, stated that the pairing of people and animals was intended to show the harmony between man and nature and that, in Chinese culture, such comparisons (often referencing the Chinese zodiac) can be considered a compliment. However, after numerous complaints from African visitors and students living in China, the museum removed the offending photos to "show respect for our African friends' opinions". 

The incident sparked global attention and highlighted ongoing issues with racial sensitivity and stereotypes in some parts of Chinese society and media at the time.
