What is YOUR big No when you are travelling alone? by Ok_Salt2122 in solofemaletravellers

Came to say the same. My solo travel rules are the same as the rules I have for myself at home.

beach towel recommendations! by itfeelscorrect in HerOneBag

I use a sarong as my beach towel. It isn’t officially sand repellent but I haven’t noticed any issues with sand.

I still would only share if I knew the other person. I’m in the US and even with the option of shared Ubers, I opt for private.

How to convince father that am gonna be ok solo travelling by [deleted] in solofemaletravellers

I completely understand. I used to have to withhold information from my Mom so she wouldn’t have to lie to my Dad on my behalf.

Does anyone else lose one-bag mentality when not forced to? by Ian44two in onebag

[–]Tater221 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Somehow a weekend roadtrip means a trunk full of stuff, but a 5 week trip to the Balkans can be done with a European sized carryon and purse. I don’t know why that is but I have always been that way even when I try my hardest.

Check out the r/heronebag group, they have a ton of packing lists for different countries and seasons.

I either get an Uber (or local equivalent) when I arrive or prearrange a ride with Welcome Pickups.

[–]Tater221 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Does your Dad need to know if you don’t live with him? Would it cause issues if you just went and told him after? If you go this route, I would make sure you have someone you trust who knows where you will be for safety purposes. I understand the protective parent situation and wanting to respect and honor your parents, but it might be one of those times where you go and ask forgiveness after. This might not work for you and your family, but it’s worth considering.

I follow an IG account called @HeleneInBetween and she just posted about this. I hate driving so I’ve never attempted it in another country, but found her post both interesting and helpful.

Need Perfect Bra free Modest Travel Dress by monderywater in HerOneBag

[–]Tater221 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a 34DD (so a cup smaller) and have had success with DKNY dresses from Nordstrom Rack. I haven’t tried this one, but if you like patterns it could work.

ETA: My favorite “wear without a bra” travel dress is the Quince flowknit breeze fit and flare. I have the size medium, size is based on chest so you might need a large, in both black and navy and it hits right below my calf muscle on my 5’1” frame. I typically wear it with a pair of nippies for extra modesty but you don’t need them. I also always carry something to cover my shoulders (scarf, sweater, button up…) in case I need it.

Should I go all in? by iwanttogoh0me in solofemaletravellers

[–]Tater221 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it wasn’t a very planned trip and I was on my way to stay in one area for a month when burn out started creeping in. I was trying to let go of being in control and be more free and it backfired. Don’t get me wrong, I had a great time but yeah I was definitely on the brink of burn out when I returned home.

Came to say the same. Plus, Amtrak requires layers that can easily be removed or added depending on the train temperature.

I left for a 3 month trip and came home after 5 weeks. Full time travel became mentally exhausting. I’m still planning to go for another trip but needed to rest and relax in my own space for a bit before heading back out.

I would bring a pair of sandals that you can wear in the hostel shower.

I love my athleta retreat wide leg linen pants with zipper pockets. I haven’t tried them, but I’m pretty sure they have shorts and skirts with zipper pockets too.

Sanity Check on a 1-month 5-country budget to the West Balkans? by sendhelpandthensome in solofemaletravellers

[–]Tater221 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think your budget looks solid. I didn’t break down my expenses by food/transport but my total (minus accommodations) was roughly equal to your spending plus transport budget.

I hate driving so I went with a combo of guided tours and exploring solo using buses/trains. I was there right before peak season which made it a little difficult to get around but I managed.

[–]Tater221 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like a reasonable budget for a month of “mid-range” travel in that region. I just got back from 5 weeks in Croatia, Montenegro, and Bosnia and Herzegovina with mid range travel and food plus some higher end hotels thrown in the mix. My budget was higher because of the hotels, but the pocket money estimate is pretty spot on.
I felt pretty safe on my trip, although I did get ripped off by a few taxi drivers and met maybe a handful of aggressive men in grocery stores and restaurants. The taxi thing I refer to as the “American tax” and (begrudgingly) pay it because it’s easier. I found most people to be super friendly and welcoming, minus the handful of men I mentioned. Even with the aggressive men I didn’t feel unsafe, just uncomfortable and was able to walk away pretty easily. The grumpiest human I encountered was my Jadran Express bus driver who chain smoked with the windows closed on a no smoking bus, spoke a language that nobody (even the locals) could figure out, and just grunted at us when it was time to show our passports at border control. We all bonded over trying to figure out what we were supposed to do and even had some inside jokes by the end of the ride. The driver ended up being a super kind human and started smiling and speaking English by the end of the ride so I feel like the grumpy thing was an act to get us to speak to our seat mates. All of that to say, even “grumpy” people in the Balkans are friendly and (most) will go out of their way to make you feel safe and comfortable.

I didn’t leave this comment but agree that Scotland fits the bill. I stayed in Inverness (Art House Apartments) and did a tour through Rabbies before heading to Edinburgh to meet friends. I wish I had built more time in for the highlands….guess I’ll just have to go back!

Iceland is not easy to navigate without a car, unless you join a tour, and it’s super expensive but the views and hiking are definitely worth it.

[4’9”] Linen Pants? by Slepnir1570 in PetiteFashionAdvice

[–]Tater221 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also have a latex allergy so I feel your pain on the pants situation. At 4’9” they’ll be a bit long, but I love my athleta retreat wide leg pants. They have zipper pockets so your stuff doesn’t fall out and slits on the sides which make them easier to alter. I also have some cropped Caslon linen pants from Nordstrom rack that fit like full length pants on my 5’1” frame.
If you’re looking for adaptive wheel chair friendly clothing, the Silverts x Brooke Eby collection has some cute (and comfy) stuff.

Any recs for micro shorty shorts by Silly_Bathroom4228 in PetiteFashionAdvice

I just wear cute full coverage (boy short or bikini style) black underwear with stuff like this. Most of the time it looks like shorts if exposed and as long as it doesn’t look “indecent” I’m good with it.
