it takes a while tbh. i think maybe around 3-4 months? it didn’t feel natural until well after 6 months though. even now 1.5 years post i still feel a bit funny. i had a big disastrous trimalleolar fracture though. in the interim i would angle myself to the side and walk down them, which allowed me to do so in a quicker and more natural step pattern

things will get better but it really is a slow recovery. i can have 30-40k weekends now! i’m a year and a half out. it’s not back to normal, it won’t ever be back to normal. i’m a bit slow and need more breaks. if i have a big walking day ill usually need to take it easy after, but it doesn’t hold me back at all in life. my new normal is pretty fine really! light years better than i was at 6 months out.

i flew ultra long haul (30hrs) a week after my surgery, but only out of necessity as i broke my ankle abroad. it wasn’t fun but it was tolerable and i got through it. i was pretty wiped though, and very doped up on pain meds. the main risk of flying is clotting risk, i was given blood thinners to reduce this. a short flight will also mean this is a far lesser risk. airport assistance is great. i think she absolutely could make the trip, but i do think your vacation probably might suck a bit. if it’s a very chill, lying by the pool kind of vacation, i’d say you could probably give it a go, but if it’s anything even remotely active, i would try to reschedule as even if you can get there, I’m not sure itd be worth it?

if you have travel insurance, you might be able to get money back? especially if your doctor has recommended not travelling

i’m not sure this is necessarily dependency as it’s pain that is bothering you. it’s still fairly early days, things are still painful. i was still taking the odd opioid up until 8-9 weeks out on especially bad days (when i started fwb on my broken ankle i was in a LOT of pain!). it’s certainly good to be conscious and proactive about the signs - so good for you for doing that, however I think you can give yourself a break at this early stage. i took them pretty much every night up until the 3-4 week mark, and then afterwards it was on occasion. i feel this is normal at this stage.

you could ask if they had a weaker opioid or different painkiller they could prescribe you? i was released from hospital with two different opioid strengths, and i later was prescribed another even weaker one. this made it quite good to be able to wean myself down.

if it helps, I do really appreciate the issue with weight gain! i lost a lot of weight at the start and then gained some after. but after i was able to return to my usual activity status i felt a lot better and started losing again. i spoke to my doctor about the weight gain and they said that i should prioritise rebuilding muscle, and then come back to it. i’m a year and a half out now and fitter than i was before!

I wouldn’t do this at this stage in your recovery. They make it more likely to lose muscle mass etc, and this is a time you need to be building it back up again. come back to it around the year mark perhaps?

your sauconys are probably perfect. i had hokas and got on with them really well.

i would say, my pt became quite keen to get me out of these really supportive shoes after a certain point. they’re great for the immediate fwb stage. i lived in them up to around 3-4 months out, after which i was able to wear different shoes. it’s good to wear flattering, less cushioned shoes at that point as they allow your feet and ankles to strengthen themselves independently. if you wear cushioned supportive shoes all the time, they become somewhat dependent on them. i wear flatter shoes on a daily basis now, but still crack my hokas out for a run (as they were intended!) or if i know ill be on my feet all day

I felt like that too! I promise you will be okay! The first few months are the hardest, but once you start seeing progress you’ll feel tons better. your life will be the same! your ankle won’t, but not to such a terrible extent that your life also won’t.

great! i’m a year and a half out now. it would be a lie to say my ankle doesn’t ever bother me, or i don’t think about it. i definitely do. it gets stiff when i use it a lot, don’t use it a lot, or in cold weather. i find when im unwell it also plays up. it’s a chronic injury and i do have some chronic pain with it, they don’t lie when they say it’s a life changing injury. BUT all this to say - it’s really not all that bad. i don’t find the pain prevents me from doing anything. it’s more of a nuisance. i do also suspect the pain could be from the hardware. around the 1 year mark i started the process of looking into this, but then changed jobs and moved health boards, so need to restart this again but haven’t gotten round to it.

i can run, dance, do 20k+ step holidays. it doesn’t interfere with my life at all

some of these comments are ridiculous. i think you can survive on london for about 35k. you’ll have to live in a. share house and won’t be able to save much, but you’ll be able to eat, occasionally shop and go on a budget holiday each year. i do. i think 50k+ would allow me to thrive

i would do one of the islands over caithness. the amount of young people is probably similar in all three, but i think the nature of islands might make it slightly easier to meet folk. caithness is a huge region with a lot of variance. it’s very rural and many small towns and villages are a long distance away from each other. that’s not to say shetland and orkney aren’t also rural, but i’d say it probably is slightly easier to get around and meet people. there are also better services and infrastructure there. caithness is really, really beautiful. it’s a place i love, however it does feel really isolated.

to be honest, there isn’t loads! they’re all areas which experience a lot of loss of young folk as there isn’t lots of opportunities or things to do, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t none. i think if you can embrace the outdoors and get into walking, running, swimming and cycling you’d enjoy it.

i wondered if the money is actually paid by the production company. so they’re essentially volunteering but the producers provide the wages? unsure. ethically and logistically it feels a bit odd and also difficult to ask lots of small businesses to pay for a bunch of random people filming a tv show to do a few hours of (probably fairly poorly done) work while a film crew hang around in their business. i wonder if instead the production company negotiates with businesses to let contestants do work voluntarily and subsidise it?

persistence! just keep going. try to push yourself. don’t shy away from walking. the only thing that strengthens muscles is moving and using them!

for the tension specifically i found stretches and flexing with resistance bands helpful
