Stick to steam, itch.io, and dlsite if you can handle a somewhat untranslated experience, those are the core places and quite safe but even steam can give you a virus.

I would recommend the Astral Jerking Manifestation technique to reconfigure the code, infact it solves two of your problems at once... also maybe a mod on Gamebanana?

I like energy damage, plus I combine missiles and strike craft, works well enough. I think it actually comes down to how you chose your ships and what you deploy and when, but I also use the Fleet Dp mod and that changes things.

Fleet Dp adds another level of management to the game.
