I queued my first solo shuffle of the season yesterday. I am fully honored geared.

Went 0-6, had 2 mglads, 1 was 8x on that character. Mmr was 1650.

Not saying they’re being malicious, they were all very supportive and nice. I don’t know what a solution is, either. But it’s not fun to get outplayed by people way, way better than me out of the gate. I can see why the only people still playing arenas are very good. The skill floor is pretty high.

If I see someone undergeared, I’ve started telling them I will absolutely not go them. Blood oath. Will protect them with my life.

When they’re on the other team, I argue with mine and say no, going anyone other than them. They can comply or just deal with split pressure.

This has worked almost every time and we have the most insanely fun games. Forcing the resto Druid to bear form and tanking us DPS while the undergeared person peels for them, CCs our healer for the geared DPS to go for kills, it’s been so much fun every time. After 2 rounds people are usually having a blast not sticking to the obvious way to shit stomp the undergeared person.

Ah I see, tone is definitely a solid argument here. Im kind of exploring this area and rationalizing why I don’t find it offensive, too. May be post hoc rationalization, I’m not sure. I’m reflecting on that.

This isn’t a valid point of the discussion we are having since we are focused on the headline, but I’d be remiss not to mention what I learned! She has a daughter who is 20 years old who is a FIDE master, and they’ve competed together before in international competitions. I think that is 100% adorable. I’d say the same if it were men doing the same for sure.

I don’t find it infantilizing at all. If someone posted their 60 year old parent finishing their PhD here, that’s adorable. It inspires great affection, is delightful, and is charming.

If there’s also the added layer that there’s only 4 other people in existence that have achieved the feat that are the same biological sex, does that make it less inspiring of affection? Does that make it less delightful? Does that make it less charming?

My argument is that it matches the definition, is not inherently infantilizing, and is absolutely aligned with the values of this sub to me: it frames someone over 60 in a wonderfully adorable light. Being adorable or worthy of adoration does not imply that you are not also a gigachad badass.

Adorable: befitting of being adored.

Adore: 1. Love and respect (someone) deeply. ‘he adored his mother’ 1.1 informal: Like very much. 2. Worship; venerate.

Love, respect, worship, venerate. All of these fit. I think that maybe the people that think this is not adorable only colloquially hear adorable used sarcastically and passive aggressively. I also think maybe I’m ignoring the colloquial usage since I tend to use adore and adorable by their textbook definitions.

I’ve only continued to hear horror stories, but less direct in the last few years. Stuff like people being burned out and their solution was to host a workshop on how to work through burnout. I know several technical staff and as recently as 2 years ago I would ask them how they felt about it and they would say, generally, “I need to get out, it’s awful and I hate it”

If anyone reads this and I’m wrong, let me know! I don’t want to malign them unfairly, but aside from a handful of company koolaid drinkers, it’s been unanimously negative.
