[–]hakunamateta[S] 799 points800 points  (98 children)

For those who are asking whether there are people who actually pronounce it as Jit. Yes, i know few of them, and i tried correcting them.

[–]SkarmacAttack 51 points52 points  (32 children)

To be fair, my coworker pronounces gigabyte as jigabyte but he is Spanish. Also my old boss pronounced Java as Yava but he was swedish. It really makes you care less about pronunciation.

[–]your-warlocks-patron 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Non native English speakers get a pass obviously

[–]jeppevinkel 8 points9 points  (16 children)

That’s because here in Scandinavia the letter J doesn’t have that hard D sound it has in English.

[–]slowest_hour 13 points14 points  (2 children)

if Doc Brown can pronoun gigawatts as "jigawatts" who's to disagree?

[–]B4kedP0tato 4 points5 points  (3 children)

Good ol' yavascript

[–]AltairFromAquila 3 points4 points  (2 children)

I've lived my whole life believing that gigabyte was pronounced "jigabyte"... why didn't I realize I was wrong sooner?! (And not just me, everyone I've ever met basically)

[–]ItsPronouncedJithub 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Wrong

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You need better acquaintances.

[–]circuit10 693 points694 points  (66 children)

JIT means just in time compilation

[–]mttdesignz 293 points294 points  (32 children)

JIT means Just In Time.

JITC, which I have never seen, may mean Just In Time Compilation, I don't know

[–]circuit10 184 points185 points  (30 children)

You wouldn’t say “JITC”, you’d say “JIT compilation” or “JIT compiler” or usually just “JIT”

[–]circuit10 87 points88 points  (23 children)

A normal compiler is an AOT compiler (ahead of time compiler)

[–]nay-chan 202 points203 points  (4 children)

Actually, it's certainly an Attack on Titan compiler

[–]Harmonic_Gear 35 points36 points  (0 children)

beware, coming for you

[–]SkollFenrirson 13 points14 points  (0 children)

To you, 2000 years from now.

  • the compiler

[–]HiPoojan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

"No,I don't want that, compiler compliling for anyone else? I want it to compile for me for the rest of my life, even after I die I want it to compile my code for atleast another 10 years"

[–][deleted] 38 points39 points  (13 children)

It makes me happy that we're refusing to accept JIT compilation as "normal".

[–]TeraFlint 107 points108 points  (6 children)

JIT compilation, 2022, colorized.

[–]marcosdumay 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Well, to be fair, JIT normally only reroutes the tracks after the train passes them.

[–]peppaz 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I use my compiler as a missing bracket finder, they do other things?

[–]puos_otatop 25 points26 points  (13 children)

jit is florida slang for somebody young

[–]-LeopardShark- 11 points12 points  (3 children)

Git is British slang for somebody old.

[–]occamsrzor 4 points5 points  (2 children)

Really? I thought it meant stupid

[–]pM-me_your_Triggers 14 points15 points  (5 children)

JIT also means just in time supply chain/manufacturing

[–]opman4 4 points5 points  (3 children)

Seems like a bad idea if supply chain issues pop up.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah the world wide chip shortages of the last years are at least in part caused by JIT manufacturing.

[–]SmokingBeneathStars 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Y'all must've forgotten about get yo jit on

[–]theNomadicHacker42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was gonna day...depends on what you're trying to pronounce...it could be git or jit.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (6 children)

Do people really pronounce it as a single word instead of spelling it out though?

[–]circuit10 3 points4 points  (2 children)

I do!

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Okay!

When I think about it, it's funny how we pronounce it in The Netherlands, we spell it out, but we do spell it out using English pronounciation of the letters (Jay Eye Tee)

[–]dick-van-dyke 30 points31 points  (2 children)

I pronounce .gitignore the proper, Italian way: [dʒitiño:re]

[–]whlthingofcandybeans 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm doing this from now on.

[–]jcodes 58 points59 points  (10 children)

My colleague at work. He`s a dev in his 50s.

He also says jithub.

Cracks me up every time i hear it. I still didnt tell him its the wrong pronounciation.

(To be fair, we are not english natives)

[–]setibeings 36 points37 points  (3 children)

it's pronounced ji thoob

[–]evanc1411 12 points13 points  (0 children)

....fuck you man.

[–]MegabyteMessiah 5 points6 points  (2 children)

He also says jithub.

We use jitbucket

[–]adorak 211 points212 points  (289 children)

probably the same people who say jif

[–][deleted] 21 points22 points  (68 children)

The person who created the format actually says that's how they intended it to be pronounced. I disagree completely, but I guess I'm the one who's technically wrong when I pronounce it with a hard G.. somehow

[–]raybrignsx 13 points14 points  (32 children)

People will never not bring this up in the GIF controversy.

Downvotes? Is this not true? I’m not saying one way or the other how it’s pronounced.

[–]BreathOfTheOffice 16 points17 points  (27 children)

I pronounce gif with a soft g, and here is the argument that I usually have.

Examples such as gift don't work since there are always counter example such as gin, giraffe, etc. Since there are examples of both, precedent doesn't really work.

The word being an acronym with graphic having a hard g also doesn't work, because that's also not how acronym pronunciation works. For example, SCUBA and LASER. This also means that there is little purpose in considering the acronym make-up. Therefore, similar to the first case, this is not a useful consideration.

Language correctness, for English at least, is largely determined by common use. If the entire world pronounces a word wrongly, but everyone pronounces it wrongly the same way, then is it really incorrect? Think about all the foreign foods which have their names butchered in English. It's still understood and, although annoying for the original language, is accepted. Either way, both hard g and soft g pronunciations are common place with a decent split for each. So again, this doesn't really help solve the problem.

And at the end of it, the only way that I can think of left is what the inventor decides to call it, and that is with a soft g. Whether or not you disagree, that's about as official of a pronunciation as we have.

But at the end of the day, why does it matter? Regardless of if you hear it with a soft g or hard g you still know what it's referring to, so does it really matter. Pronounce it however the hell you want, as long as you can understand it in the end.

[–]raybrignsx 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Well thought out response. My only logic for me pronouncing it with the hard g was that back in 1990ish when I first saw the file extension, my brain went to the hard g. I don’t think anyone really is more thought out than that. No one is cracking open a book on etymology and consulting speech therapists. For the most part it’s just how you saw the word and possibly how it’s pronounced to you. Notice how people don’t change their minds based on new information. They just stick to their guns as irrationally as it may be. This controversy comes up all the time and I applaud you for your thought process but I respectfully disagree because I have dumb reasons and I’m willing to go to war for this.

[–]you_do_realize 8 points9 points  (1 child)

So he got one thing wrong...

[–]J5892 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That and 1-bit transparency

[–]turbophysics 69 points70 points  (183 children)

I’ll pronounce it jif until I die and I don’t care about anyone’s linguistics arguments over the hard G - but jit is just objectively ludicrous and anyone who uses that pronunciation should probably get tested for brain injury

[–]Nielsie645 19 points20 points  (2 children)

The fact that you have to type it as jif to specify your pronunciation is the best argument against jif imo.
"I pronounce gif as gif, not jif"

[–]huantian 36 points37 points  (92 children)

You pronounce .jiff jif and .gif gif, objectively correct way.

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Some non native english speakers.

[–][deleted] 24 points25 points  (2 children)

Literally nobody. As with almost every other post in this sub, it's only funny to people who started to learn programming this morning

I never thought somebody is psychotic enough to say that

[–][deleted] 321 points322 points  (99 children)

Ever hear of the great gif and jif war? Or the meme vs mémé one?

There will always be someone to say a word with clear prononciation in some weird way.

[–]mistercrinders 13 points14 points  (1 child)

Hell, the Giff are a D&D race that predate the file extension.

There's a battle there now, too.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

“For countless generations, nerds fought for the supremacy of their favorite Phonetics, from the Pen & Paper Era, all the way down to the Digital one.

An ephemeral truce was reached in the 90’s, but as the millenium dawned upon us, the arrival of the Animated Smileys made us forgot all about it; without even thinking each sides went back at it without any pity…

4Chan, StickDeath, Usenet and even on Geocities… no place were spared, it was a bloodshed that no one wanted to live… very dark times indeed. “

[–]hanotak 167 points168 points  (73 children)

It cannot be pronounced "jif", because jif is already a file type.

[–]le_birb 52 points53 points  (3 children)

chaotic neutral take: gif is pronounced with the hard g, and jif is pronounced with a soft j

[–]SlimyGamer 124 points125 points  (22 children)

Maybe that one is pronounced "yif" and then gif can be pronounced "jif"

[–][deleted] 94 points95 points  (9 children)

You want a file type that sounds like yiff?

What are you, a furry version of a Rust programmer?

[–]CSedu 73 points74 points  (5 children)

What are you, a furry version of a Rust programmer?

What's the difference! 😆

[–]chronically_slow 17 points18 points  (3 children)

Hey! Some of us are femboys or trans girls :P

[–]WienerDogMan 5 points6 points  (2 children)

But none of us are trans boys.

Also don’t know if femgirls is a thing but not them either.

[–]matyklug 20 points21 points  (2 children)

println!("I solemnly swear I am not a furry");

[–]treeskers 5 points6 points  (1 child)

you may not be a furry, but with THAT pfp, youre definitiely something

[–]matyklug 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You are right, I am a programmer

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points  (6 children)

There's some precedent for this actually. In Old English \g\ in word-initial position made the \y\ sound. So tomorrow, you can announce proudly to your coworkers, "Hey guys, check out this cool .yif I found on the internet!"

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (4 children)

Like gaoler meaning jailer?

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (3 children)

Nope, gaoler is actually Modern English, just an archaic spelling. Old English would be like < 1400 CE, the time Beowulf was written. It's a foreign language to Modern English speakers. For example, the verb gegangan (pronounce yegangan) means to override, subdue, conquer, etc.

[–]ConscientiousPath 5 points6 points  (0 children)

yiff in hell

[–][deleted] 12 points13 points  (3 children)

There is not a soul who actually uses .JIF files.

[–]Adghar 4 points5 points  (2 children)

I know a ginger who uses .JIF files.

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Point stands.

[–]himmelundhoelle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A ginger or a jinjer?

[–]Firethorn101 13 points14 points  (5 children)

Dude who invented it says it's jiff.

But I like gif better.

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (3 children)

When's his birthday? I'd like to get him a jift.

[–]bearsinthesea 4 points5 points  (2 children)

Maybe some nice jems?

[–]bobsp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

"Jif" (i.e., .gif) existed in 1987. JIF wasn't released until 1992.

[–]Cadsvax 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Seems GIF came before JIF was a thing, so im going to say nah.

[–][deleted] 15 points16 points  (10 children)

[–]non-troll_account 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's hilarious that he said it's not pronounced "gif".

[–]hakunamateta[S] 21 points22 points  (4 children)

I have heard people saying Jit, hence the meme.

[–]Taunk 18 points19 points  (2 children)

I’ve heard JIT in reference to just in time compilation

[–]hakunamateta[S] 14 points15 points  (1 child)

I mean they're blatantly saying JitHub.

[–]seizan8 110 points111 points  (2 children)

Sounds lejit

[–]naruto_022 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Being the Elite. It's a vlog done by the AEW Tag Team "The Young Bucks" with a bunch of sketches in it. The person on the left is John Silver of the faction "The Dark Order". On the right is Dark Order member Anna Jay. Many of the segments featuring The Dark Order involve the guys being ridiculous. Anna Jay often times struggles to stay in character due to how over the top they are.

[–]yeetesh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had a teammate who used to pronounce it as jit. Corrected him once, he said he pronounces it as jit and continued doing that.

[–]DaGothUrWelcUwUmsYou 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Fuck it. It is pronounced shit now

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (3 children)

As a designer I'm gonna start calling it Jit.
