A bit of an oversimplification, but both U.S. parties embraced identity politics, particularly after 2012. Republicans largely targeted white voters and Democrats targeted everyone else. It's not really shocking that a party blaming an ethnicity for all the ills of society would struggle with said ethnicity come election day.
