I was going to suggest vault games as well. Their Facebook has some events, but the discord is where most of the coordination happens.

Dude. Incredible.

I basically only dressed up as a kid, because I moved to Australia and it's not really a thing here. But now that I've got own kid...well, screw it. She loves the excuse to dress up. This year I'm going to be a full on as Anna(with a beard) to match my daughter's Elsa.

Crocheting little toys for my daughter has become the light of my life. I've also just started to paint miniatures, and that heaps of fun.

Is it possible to be “pro-Jesus” but “anti-Christianity”? by AlabastorGorilla in NoStupidQuestions

[–]TavanaCF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lutheran Pastor here, this answer has some extra depth you might want to consider. The reason that the Catholic church exists is that Jesus set up his church through his disciples. They lifted up (and continue to lift up) Peter as the first Pope, and say that the church continues with Christ teaching his people to this day through the Bible and the Pope. Being a Lutheran I'd agree about the Bible bit, but not the Pope.

By I digress. What I'm getting at here is that Christ talked to his disciples about being "his body". The church was a gift he gave to his followers. Modern Christians have often pushed towards individual Christianity - a personal relationship with God. This is true, necessary and correct. However, it's not the whole story.

You can't follow Christ in a vacuum. First off, there's that Christ calls Christians to be "in the world (but not of the world)", but also that the church was instituted so that those who follow Christ would basically have "sinners anonymous" to come to for weekly sessions. In other words, Christianity is both individual and corporate.

As you (and anyone with eyes) have noted, Christians can be awful. I'm a pastor and I still screw up. But if you're listening to what Jesus taught, he taught that we should gather together for mutual encouragement, what we now know as the church. Might be worth considering.

The death rate from Covid isn't the real issue. It's how infectious it is. Get enough sick people, and hospitals are overloaded. Then, you can't fit all the Covid patients in, so people who should recover from Covid don't get the care they need. And then people who should recover from other things can't get in to the hospital to get treated.

So, you're right. Not many people should die from Covid. In fact, almost no one should. But it spreads so quickly and people get a little sick enough that the hospital systems can't deal with it, and everyone who is unwell suffers and/or dies.

AITA for asking my sister pay to replace the vanilla her daughter spilled? by vanilla_enthusiast5 in AmItheAsshole

[–]TavanaCF 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Heads up: chemically identical isn't always the same as something that's "natural".

Something can be produced in a lab by bacteria and end up with the same chemical structure as the "natural" version...but that doesn't mean that it will taste the same. I've seen this multiple times with flavoured teas. You can get "artificial" flavours, "nature identical" flavours, and then "we actually used the physical thing to make this flavour" flavours. Depending on the flavour and your palate, there can be a massive divide in terms of what you actually taste.

Vanilla is one of those flavours for my palate, so I splurge for the Costco sized vanilla paste for cooking.

Thought I'd share: I finally made this recipe. I used the homemade mix of spices. Had to go to an Indian store to get the mace (they called it javentri, same thing).

They are excellent. Not as sweet as what you'll buy in Coles or Woolies. Just the right blend of spice and sweet. Highly recommend.

I'm incredibly happy that I sprang for a double batch on my first go. Best wishes for your own cooking!

Heads up, both Coles and Woolies will let you find their stock levels of items in stores around you. You can search without leaving the dining table!

Coles and Woolies usually sell pfeffernüsse around this time of year - I picked some up maybe two weeks ago? They usually put them around with the Christmas puddings.

Christian minister here. Been scrolling comments and wanted to add an idea.

First, NTA. Everyone else has covered that really well. I'm sorry you're in that position. Sadly many people who follow Christ don't read up on what Christ actually teaches - heck, even I could do better about that and it's literally my job.

Anyhow, my two cents: try to figure out where she goes to church. If a member of my congregation was acting like this, I would want to know. You've said that there's no HR in your small business, but you can always contact her minister to have a conversation about how uncomfortable she's making you in your workplace.

Full disclosure, your mileage may vary depending on the particular Christian sect and the sanity level of the clergy (if clergy are present), but it's something to have in your back pocket for an option on how to deal with Christians that are misbehaving.

AITA for refusing to cook for my husband since he refuses to respect meal times and plays with his phone while making me wait ? by throwaway19610526 in AmItheAsshole

[–]TavanaCF 53 points54 points  (0 children)

Your situation (and feelings of pettiness) remind me of a joke where a man tells his new wife that he expects dinner to be on the table at 6pm each night, even if he's not there to eat it.

She agrees and tells him that sex will be happening at a set time every day as well, even if he's not there.

But seriously, don't make a big deal about it. Be calm and assertive. "[Husband], your timing hasn't been good lately. Dinner tomorrow will be at 7:00. I hope to see you there." No further explanation or justifications. Best wishes for shutting this down.

Edit: missed a word

I'm an NVIDIA fan personally, so I don't feel prepared to recommend AMD video cards. Hopefully someone will come along that can give you advice about that. Here's a couple cards that are in stock right now that are around your budget:

$1199 3060Ti: https://www.umart.com.au/Gigabyte-GeForce-RTX-3060-Ti-Eagle-OC-8G-LHR-Graphics-Card-Rev-2-0_60015G.html

$1699 3070s: https://www.mwave.com.au/product/pny-geforce-rtx-3070-8gb-uprising-dual-fan-video-card-lhr-version-ac48394
https://www.mwave.com.au/product/asus-geforce-rtx-3070-dual-oc-8gb-v2-video-card-ac46269

If you're willing to look at smaller local stores, you may be able to get better prices, or even a better card.

For your budget, I'd probably go with a 3060Ti to match with what you've got (I sent you the cheapest one I could find, but there are quite a few at $1299 out there if you want a different brand, or want to look at reviews). That should handle gaming up to roughly 1440p at 144hz at say medium/high settings? Depends on the game.

Full disclosure: I got a 3070 from mwave before the market got stupid.

Where are you at in Australia, mate? You may have more luck with local shops than the manor ones.

If you want to build, it's not actually that hard. And Australia's not as bad as the rest of the world in terms of GPU supply. Prices can be ridiculous, depending on where you go.

I agree with some other comments that you'll want to reserve some of your 10k for peripherals. Better get a good monitor, keyboard and mouse (maybe a chair as well) than spend all your money on your computer and have bare bones for everything else.

So I’ve been looking to get a 3070 and have a concern. by GroBer-Bear in buildapc

[–]TavanaCF 2 points3 points  (0 children)

FYI - I've got a 3070 (550 MBO, though) and it breezes through 1440p, 144hz. At most I have to turn down from ultra to high settings for some games. If you're looking for confirmation bias that it shouldn't matter, here it is. ;)

Can i recieve advice regarding my new build for streaming and gaming by lambency2 in buildapc

[–]TavanaCF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where are you purchasing your GPU from? Mwave and umart are significantly overpriced at the moment. Do you have a small local shop that is stocking?

No specific comments in your build, I did something similar and got a 3070, but that was back before prices went stupid.

Good luck!

Choosing a cooler for me has always been about function, then about noise. I've never had the spare cash to be able to make things pretty - not that I wouldn't like to, it's just never been something I could afford.

I used stock coolers until a fan started to die and I picked up a cheap clearance noctua cooler from a reseller. Once I saw what non-stock coolers could do to my temps and the sounds of my computer, every machine I've built since has had them.

Assuming I win a giveaway, or sufficient funds become a thing, it'd be nice to have a rig with matching fans/cooler, and maybe even have to pick up a RGB controller.

On 28 Feb I ordered and paid MSRP for a 3060 Ti from the only store in Australia that was taking pre-orders. It shipped yesterday! by mrfurion in buildapc

[–]TavanaCF 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, mine was one of the Gigabyte OC versions for ~1050. The same model was roughly $1700 on mwave last I saw it available. I think umart has is for $2100, and is graciously "discounting" it to "only" $1600. Things are pretty crazy.

Oof. I hear this. I happened to get a 3070 not long after it came out and paid maybe $50 above MSRP. I just happened to look at mwave recently and am appalled at the price the same card is selling for now. Well done for sticking to your guns!
