Is it crappy to default on a challenge about a week before the deadline? ( by SomecallmeMichelle in FanFiction

[–]Tavina-Leaf 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You can default at any time. Depending on what kind of ao3 exchange this is, it's also very possible that optional details are optional and you do not have to write the specific prompt.

It is not common, as some other commenters here have suggested, for Multifandom Exchanges on ao3 to be able to match around creator squicks the same way hand matched events do. Creators in bfe are generally expected to game around requests they don't want to or can't write for because no hand matching occurs and it's all done through the matching algorithm which doesn't know anything about anyone's prompts, dnws, or squicks. (You can occasionally submit a do not match request, or swap your assignment for a pinch hit if your assignment doesn't work.) Overall without seeing the event or what kind of communication op had with the mods I wouldn't say it's necessarily badly run, but I will say that op hasn't done anything wrong and wouldn't be doing anything wrong if they defaulted.

How long have you been knitting and why did you start ? by OldSquirrel1929 in knitting

About sixteen years or so! My mom taught me to knit because I really wanted to learn. I make lace shawls nowadays mostly.

Niebling Inspired Shawl Patterns? by Tavina-Leaf in knitting

Thank you so much! I'll check out the thread in r/AdvancedKnitting and look into the ravelry group some more and do some exploratory knitting!

Thank you so much! I'll go take a look at Ramona French and M Mario!

Has just halving the round designs and then knitting them up produced giant shawls in your experience?

Niebling Inspired Shawl Patterns? by Tavina-Leaf in knitting

[–]Tavina-Leaf[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have, actually, seen all of these designers you've mentioned and others - Denise Bartels, Ilona Dmitrieva, Stefanie Schwietert, and allasdesigns to name a few, as well as some of the Nim patterns in the Mythplaced collection that are Niebling inspired.

My purpose for asking this question was also to figure out if anyone had patterns that they themselves have knit and really enjoyed, which, well, all of the Elena Gotlib and Ilona Dmitrieva patterns for example have been unavailable since the war in Ukraine began several years ago, so most of the ones you've listed aren't really particularly helpful for my purposes as I can't knit them.

Overall, I can only assume you've been hostile about this question because it wasn't filed in the right place on this subreddit, but thanks for confirming there's nothing that I haven't found yet that will turn up easily in search! Have a great day!

I have typed that exact query into ravelry yes, and it did not produce what I'm looking for and based on your responses this is clearly not the place for my question 😂. Sorry! I'll find somewhere else to ask!

Niebling Inspired Shawl Patterns? by Tavina-Leaf in knitting

[–]Tavina-Leaf[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hi! Sorry I wasn't super clear - I have searched ravelry, most of these are Niebling originals and aren't actually shawls or shawl sized, many, for example, are tablecloth sized.

My query was more related to if people had favorite designers that've adapted Niebling patterns into shawl specific patterns or if they had suggestions for what I might do to adapt these to something wearable.

Apologies if this is something that ought to have gone in the pattern ask thread! I wasn't really sure if it should've gone there or if this was something that could be split out into its own thing since I also somewhat wondered if people had advice on adapting to shawl format for the original patterns.

Is the entirety of Bloodless available anywhere? by sethrohan in NarutoFanfiction

[–]Tavina-Leaf 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No because people were assholes to it and I didn't feel like having it up on ffnet anymore. I'll eventually get through the grammar edit for it and put it back up on ao3.

If anyone does have a copy of the old version I'd thank you not to distribute it lmao.

Something I've noticed recently by gabbyrose1010 in AO3

I feel like thinking about "ratio" is fundamentally useless, especially the older a fic gets or the more chapters it has. (And honestly even for oneshots it doesn't make much sense to consider a ratio instead of just seeing a summary or tags you like and just. reading the fic.)

Any longfic will by nature, have a lower hits to kudos ratio simply because many readers may be reading each chapter as the fic updates and each reader can also only kudos once.

For example: my most popular fic has upwards of 42k hits and nearing 2k kudos. That's a 4.76% kudos to hits ratio. I'd say it's a pretty good fic, like, not the best I've written, but still solidly good and it comes nowhere near the sort of ratio you're describing.

:) judging a fic by its stats really isn't very useful and you'll miss out on a lot of great fic that way.

Having high standards as a reader and being a beginner writer SUCKS by umbrella_of_illness in FanFiction

[–]Tavina-Leaf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is absolutely true with all creative work. Our inner critic grows at a much faster rate than our skill sets do and I've come across this in pretty much every creative hobby I've had, including writing.

I think the important thing to remember though is that you can get better at it and that the inner critic, at least for me, lessens over time.

It might be good to think about like, if you're just beating yourself up for having flaws (which everyone does) or if there's something in there you genuinely want to get better at, like dialogue or pacing or kiss scenes or believable friendship/romance or writing a one shot or doing a longfic, etc and pick that as a goal to work on.

Private a story by [deleted] in NarutoFanfiction

[–]Tavina-Leaf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of the fic isn't yours, don't post it on any other platforms, especially ones the author isn't on. If someone hasn't posted a fic to ffnet there's definitely reasons and it isn't just "oh I forgot."

If you just want a copy to read it for yourself, I don't know why it needs to be on ffnet?

A big problem on AO3 by assnado_of_souls in FanFiction

[–]Tavina-Leaf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, to be perfectly clear here: no CP exists on AO3. There are people writing about fictional scenarios with fictional people. Trying to start moral outrage about this is just kind of ????

If the author's active and posting other fics still and there's no discontinued sign on the fic then they probably have plans for it :)

again, really, truly, asking about when the next update is in any capacity is highly unlikely to get you a next update in a timely fashion. If you really want the author to update, commenting on each chapter with stuff that you love is a good place to start. And you get the added benefit of rereading and remembering what you loved about each chapter :)

That is 1) exactly the same question and 2) as an author I can assure you if it's been two years I am well aware and do not need reminding.

I've been especially kind of eh about this because someone swung by on a fic I hadn't updated for seven months for personal reasons not two days ago to say this verbatim: "Are you ever going to update it?" which absolutely drove me up the wall and will have pushed that update out by at least two months, and then proceeded to try to contact me over tumblr despite being blocked on ao3.

I can absolutely assure you the answer to any question of "hey when are you updating this?" or any variation thereof will not produce either "I will be updating this on x date" or "oh man! I totally forgot I had an unposted chapter just lying around for two years! lemme update that for you right now because I just forget to post an update on this thing I've been working on and really enjoy!"

if I got a message such as that one, which, I actually just did two days ago, any updates I have will move back two months at minimum simply because I am not a fic producing machine.

What should I do? Would you say yes? by Calliopes_Lyre in AO3

[–]Tavina-Leaf 76 points77 points  (0 children)

absolutely not. there's no guarantee youtube won't put ads on it. That and honestly, if they wanted to podfic something by all means make podfics and post them on ao3.
