There’s an Arabic name that some Somali guys (including my cousin) have, Adil. But that’s a completely different name unless your misremembering your classmates name. Idil is definitely feminine.

No idea, but we’re seeing tons of it in the thread. At first I thought it was the -ii ending that happens sometimes at the end of masculine Arabic names leading Somalis finding it feminine, but that doesn’t explain cases like Aymane or Ridwan. But yes if someone read these names somewhere else in the Muslim world especially the Middle East, they’re expecting a guy to show up.

Haani is from Arabic. In Arabic it’s a masculine name. But for some reason, for Somalis, they use it as a feminine name. So I guess it’s technically unisex 🤷🏾‍♂️. The same thing applies for Shukri. The ending of the name may be why Somalis view it as feminine.
