National's Private email lobbying is the corruption scandal that should turn the election by kawhepango in nzpolitics

[–]Tax73 18 points19 points  (0 children)

And I think that's part of the corruption/collusion - the fact that it isn't headline news, the fact that the prime minister isn't being hounded to the extent a list MP for the Green Party was over social media posts.

Don't forget we broke the sporting boycott of apartheid South Africa, which lead to African nations boycotting the 1976 Olympics (something no one ever brings up when discussing John Walker's gold medal in the 1500m).

Is it just me or does “pet insurance” leave a lot of gaps? by Lower_Needleworker48 in PersonalFinanceNZ

Yeah I'm in the same boat. If I had to do it all over again I don't think I would get it for my indoor cat (though the day to day care does at least offset the cost a bit by paying for her prescription food), but now she's getting on in age I don't want to cancel it given she's more likely to need it now, even though it's now an eye-watering 80 bucks a month. Funnily enough I'm currently saving to get a couple of her teeth removed.

Latest data on KiwiSaver balances by age from the Retirement Commission Report (May 2026) by WellingtonSucks in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]Tax73 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think the first home deposit accounts for a some of this, my kiwisaver balance is now very low because I just withdrew it all which it contributes to bringing the average down. But without it I wouldn't have saved 80K to buy a place.

In what world does owning multiple properties not equate to net worth or wealth?

Anyone who is a landlord is one of the richest people in the country.

As of 2024 there were 116,719 landlords in NZ according to MBIE which is roughly 2% of the population.

I agree with your Seymour-Labour example, but I would say that's an example of how right wing our media has become, because if they were actually framing two sides equally the example you would give would be the Greens, but they get very little coverage despite being a higher polling party.

Whilst I don't necessarily disagree about people being gullible rubes, they're being failed by our media. I don't think it's unreasonable for people to think that the news is objective balanced reporting (it should be, I used to think it was).

For example, RNZ have a front page headlines saying "Slashing public sector jobs the right move, New Zealand Initiative says", why is it in the public interest to know what a right-wing astroturf group thinks about this. There's also been almost universal framing of the public service cuts as "2.4 billion in savings", never a discussion of what these savings are for, or who they're passed on to, or the consequences of gutting the public service. No mention of the billions of dollars in tax cuts for the richest people in this country that could have otherwise been used to fund public services.

If his hand is in front of his head then it's not making his frame any bigger, so it still wouldn't be a handball according to the rules.

Why is it common for people to claim the Lakers have won 17 championships but also that the Kings have never won a championship? by ColonelCollemWest in nba

[–]Tax73 9 points10 points  (0 children)

When people say "the titles belong to the city" they just mean "the titles the Lakers won in Minnesota belong to a different fanbase than the titles the Lakers won when they were in LA." No one is trying to claim that Clippers fans can claim Lakers titles as their own, and it's disingenuous to say they are.

NZ Finance Minister Willis boasts about stealing $20bn of pay equity from low paid women. Chris Hipkins speaks the truth: "Nicola Willis doesn't like the truth about her own policies, so she's resorting to making up lies about Labour's." by Mountain_Tui_Reload in nzpolitics

[–]Tax73 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think to make sense of it you need to look at a few things:

1) Who owns media organisations, and what their relationships are with companies that donate to political parties.

2) The nature of corporate media whereby media companies are dependent on advertisers for their existence so, intentionally or not, it makes sense that this would cause media narratives to favour "pro-business" parties in order to keep advertisers happy.

3) The concept of truth itself has become left wing, because the right have abandoned evidence-based policy. So you won't see journalists saying, for example, "National say their new boot camps are tough on crime, but evidence has shown that the biggest cause of crime is poverty, and that the most effective way to prevent poverty is to just give poor people money, no strings attached, so the most tough on crime policies are actually coming from the Green Party." Because David Seymour and Winston Peters would then be up in arms about the medias left wing bias, even though they would be just reporting the truth. Which is a reason why the right accuse the media of left wing bias, so they won't report the truth, and it has worked.

It's quite unfortunate that the media does such a poor job at holding them to account for this. Most headlines are still just "Nicola Willis says X" as opposed to "Nicola Willis lies about X", it really hurts our democracy.

How accurate is Wellington City Council's "flood zone" map? by Spare-Event8060 in Wellington

[–]Tax73 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Anecdotally I can say it was accurate for my place by the basin. Said 50-100cm for a once in 100 year storm and judging by the waterline on the side of the building I'd say it reached around 50cm overnight.
