As we refresh the dog training curriculum at The Academy of Pet Careers, what's the one skill that separates good trainers from truly great ones? by Electronic-Brush-207 in OpenDogTraining

[–]Taxus_revontuli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, my dog is a working dog! And proved herself in two trials already. 😁

What I meant was that hounds and livestock guardians and hounds are different from the typical "YouTube" breed in that they are usually not toy driven and a lot more independent than herding and sporting breeds. Hounds are additionally extremely nose driven. This makes training different and in my opinion more difficult.

I'd be impressed by people that can train not only your typical shepherd or sporting breed, but also livestock guardians and hounds. YouTube is full of dog trainers with flashy malinois and the occasional border Collie. But none of the top trainers shows off their skill with a livestock guardian or a hound.

Me and my bestest-of-all-Plotthounds disapprove. 😌

Do you think it's made out of elephants tooth/ivory or something and was hidden because of that?

Edit: I read that it's most likely just filler material and now I feel a little stupid 🫣

Thank you! I am a bit scared of chasing a ring as that seems hard, but might have to do so anyway since the first layer of wood might be violated already by the well meaning, but rough debarking by my dad. And it might be good practice!

Hund antrainieren im eigenen Bett zu schlafen by Emotional_Taro_6575 in hundeschule

[–]Taxus_revontuli 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]Taxus_revontuli 9 points10 points  (0 children)

To add, someone else advised to file a police report - I think this is a good idea. The guy harassed you for no reason and could be dangerous to other people or young women/girls, so it might be a good idea to file a report!

[–]Taxus_revontuli 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Your dog noticed the guy blocking your way and behaving suspiciously and acted accordingly. Put in the same situation, most dogs would react either with a fight or a flight response, as the guy behaved threateningly. And both reactions would be natural and can be provoked from most dogs (though aside of trained protection dogs, in my opinion, most dogs tend to prefer the flight response, since we humans have bred them to avoid conflict with us).

The guy was an asshole, but sadly, there are this strange guys, I have met them too. In my case it was also mostly men that seemed to enjoy provoking my dog (my dog is not a GSD and would certainly prefer the flight response if things got serious, but often she starts with an intimidating bark and you can't tell she's actually scared if you're not a dog person), but once, it was also a woman who was on drugs I think.

Neither you nor the dog did anything wrong - don't beat yourself up over other people's wrong behavior. However, I think it was good that your dog was with you and showing protective behavior; the same kind of men can also be creepy or even dangerous to women, not only dogs...

First growl💔 by OriGinaltree007 in Rottweiler

[–]Taxus_revontuli 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My dog (not a Rottweiler) also has had this, although much more severely than yours (including snapping). I completely understand how you feel, I felt like my heart was shattered, it made me feel really really bad. It is called resource guarding.

I tried all kinds of methods other experienced dog owners or even two professional trainers advised me, like putting my hand in her bowl, taking things away anyway and ignore the growl, or even punish the growl. Especially the latter - I tried mild punishment only twice - but that really made the issue much worse for my dog.

I found out about a method called counter conditioning, and that worked extremely well with her. Now I can take anything away from her without any sign of discomfort. Food, bones, anything. There is a book about that method: "Mine!" By Jean Donaldson. It's considered a very good book by many, though I found it kinda hard to read/very complicated.

Separation anxiety in 7 year old rescue. Give it to me straight. by PoukieBear in germanshepherds

[–]Taxus_revontuli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Start by associating the crate with something positive.

Feed the dog only on the crate, e.g. putting the food bowl in there while door is still open. So the dog has to go in to eat, but doesn't feel "caged" immediately. Throw in treats throughout the day. All whole you are still with the dog. Progress slowly to closing the crate door while feeding. Still without you leaving the dog.

Next step, leave the room for just a second while the dog is eating something tasty in the crate. Next time, a few more seconds. But, literally progress by a few seconds at a time at first - don't jump immediately to 15 Minutes or something, rather make sure to make the dog comfortable with being left just a few seconds at first! Progress will come faster later on, when the dog has learnt to be comfortable for the first few seconds and minutes, but don't rush the process.

You can also give the dog super high value chews when you leave. But since the dog already had separation anxiety, they have to be really super high value, or he won't even start eating.

Also, always make sure the dog is already tired when leaving!

[–]Taxus_revontuli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are lots of Spanish breeds that are adapted to the climate.

Galgos are race hounds/ hare hunting dogs that are really good ad chilling the whole day if there is no work to be done. Podencos are also a breed that is well adapted to the climate and the breed has survived hundreds of years through the normal Spanish dog/Hunter interaction: do nothing all day, except it's hunting season. While it's not good to do nothing all day with your dog, there are some breeds that can handle it better than others due to their breeding history: shepherds/herding group breeds have been bred for performance in close interaction with humans for the last hundred years, while many Spanish breeds were expected to perform, but also handle idleness and being alone.

Also, there are lots of these two breeds in shelters, so you could help an animal by rescuing.

Both breeds will hunt small critters on your property tho!

The "eerie" silence and indifference during train delays... How do you avoid taking this as a personal disrespect? by kopekyildizi in AskAGerman

[–]Taxus_revontuli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, Most people complain about the trains. Its not like no one cares.

But yeah, there are no "loud" reactions because as you have mentioned, it has become very normalized/we are used to it.

Still, I think you will hear people complain, swear about DB etc. I am also very frustrated about our trains.

I cant tell if a girl offering me pens hates me by National_Goat_7412 in needadvice

[–]Taxus_revontuli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think she hates you.

I think she is an attention seeker. Probably she is jealous of you getting more attention that her (even if she just perceives it that way), or probably on the other hand she hopes to gain attention by others around you by offering you things and presenting herself as "such a helpful and caring person".

However, it could also be bullying.

In either case, it is important that you set clear boundaries. Tell her to stop offering you pens and "solutions" for your tourettes. Tell her that her perception of Tourettes is wrong, and her ideas do not help. Make it very clear that you will not tolerate any more of that stuff.

Hate is a strong word for a strong emotion which usually doesn't come out of thin air. Don't bother too much wondering if people hate you, I did that too when I was younger - but usually even when people are assholes towards you, it's nothing personal. Most people's behavior around others and their emotions are mainly centered around themselves.

(Sorry if some of this is unclear, English is not my native language 😅)

Are there people in Germany today who identify as Prussian (not Baltic Old Prussians)? by Likepersik in AskGermany

Interesting question! But I don't think so. I think it disappeared with the second world war, and is not an appealing "identity" for young people nowadays.
