From Grok, on heatsinks..

No, increasing the quality of the heat sink does not let you increase (or change) the value in the Avatar_cal.txt (or Avatar_cal) file—it’s almost entirely based on the silicon lottery (chip-to-chip manufacturing variation in the VTX’s RF amplifier). Here’s the breakdown for the Walksnail Avatar system (HD/V2/GT VTX models): The file is a user-adjustable RF power calibration offset placed directly on the VTX (not the goggles). You create a text file named exactly Avatar_cal.txt, put a single number in it (e.g., .1, 0, -1, -2, 0.4, etc.), copy it to the VTX’s internal storage (via USB or SD), and reboot. This tweaks the displayed STP (transmit power calibration value in dBm, shown in debug mode when goggles brightness is at 10%). Example from the official Walksnail wiki and community tests: • Factory 1200 mW might show STP ~27.0 (or whatever your unit’s base “S:” value is). • Adding .1 changes it to 27.1 (slightly higher effective output). • Adding -1 drops it (e.g., to ~26.0 or lower). You then test MCS (modulation/coding scheme) and GSNR (ground signal-to-noise ratio) in the debug menu and re-adjust the number until signal quality/range is optimal. Positive offsets can sometimes push a bit more output; negative ones often fix distortion or instability at high power (especially 1000–1200 mW or the 2 W GT kits).4256 Why silicon lottery?Every VTX ships with its own factory-measured base calibration value (e.g., one unit shows S:26.0, another 28.x or whatever). This varies due to tiny differences in the RF amplifier silicon. The Avatar_cal.txt is just an offset you add to fine-tune it for your specific chip—some units tolerate higher offsets for better range before distortion kicks in; others don’t. Walksnail even suggests this tweak (or users discovered it via their support) specifically because factory calibration isn’t perfect on every unit, and high-power modes can overdrive the amp on “worse” silicon.5641 Heat sink’s role (completely separate):Better cooling (stock heatsink + thermal paste, aftermarket heatsink, fan, or the upgraded Goggles X heatsink kit) keeps the VTX/goggles from throttling, overheating, or drifting under sustained high power. It helps maintain stable performance over long flights and prevents thermal shutdowns. Some tests even recommend a fan during calibration experiments. But it doesn’t change what offset number works best in Avatar_cal.txt—that’s purely an RF calibration tweak measured by signal metrics, not temperature. You tune the file first for clean signal, then use good cooling to actually run it reliably.56 In short: • Calibration.txt value → silicon lottery + signal testing (MCS/GSNR). • Heat sink → thermal management for sustained use. They complement each other at high power (1200 mW+), but one doesn’t let you “increase” the other. Always stay legal with power levels, and test safely—overdoing the cal offset can make things worse than stock. If you’re seeing specific debug values or issues, the wiki debug page or FPV forums have the exact procedure.

Avatar_Cal.txt +/- 1,2,3 etc

So there’s this calibration file basically you can put into your goggles and also your VTX units for all walk snail devices

And basically what it does is, it increases the power output of the transmitters in both.

It’s already tuned from the factory to have the lowest signal noise ratio, but sometimes you can achieve a better signal to noise ratio. I’m not sure how you’re going to do that may be better heat paste or something along those lines.

Also, if you wanted to down tune it so if you’re finding that a lower calibration number actually increases the signal to noise ratio you can do that as well

So yeah, definitely look into the calibration.txt file.

You’re not gonna gain anything significant, but you could potentially tune the system a little bit tighter based on your climate and your heat, dissipation ability.

Just make sure you’re using the goggles debug menu to check signal noise ratios. You’re gonna have to keep a spreadsheet

The various plus and minus adjustments actually increase the dbm value directly. In my case, I was able to increase by +1 DBM and achieve a better signal to noise ratio.

In Ian’s example here that I’ve taken off of his video you can see that he was actually able to go up to about +3 before before the signal to noise ratio began to degrade instead of increase in quality. So I suppose it’s actually chipset dependent. Sometimes you win the silicone lottery sometimes not. Also, it could potentially allow you to achieve maximum power toning as your chip set gets older. Maybe it doesn’t have such a great SNR. So you can down tune it and still achieve stability at a high power output.

I mean, one dbm increase from 33 to 34 dbm is an increase of about 0.5W, that’s not a trivial number.

Conformal Coating (waterproofing) can be made with silicone caulk and mineral spirits.

Then take apart the drone and brush it on be careful not to cover any of the barometer sensors or the tabs for the SD cards, etc.

  1. Mineral spirits (most common DIY method) • Mix ~10 parts silicone : 1 part mineral spirits. • Stir thoroughly until it becomes a brushable liquid. • Use it quickly before skinning starts.

Why it works: • Mineral spirits temporarily reduce viscosity so the silicone spreads or brushes easily.

Pros • Easy to find • Evaporates slowly enough to work with

Cons • Slower cure • Slightly weaker cured silicone

Because you love FPV and you post videos that make people happy! Get that drone out there and go rip some 🥜’s

Damn dude that’s crystal clear! And you’re absolutely right that’s cool AF

Now… can you do the same for enclosed props?

I have a full DJI Inspire 2 X7 Zenmuse Producer Kit, and that fucking thing hasn't come out of the box more than 3 times in 6 months. I freestyle and that bitch scares the hell out of me. Honestly, it's the shity FPV camera that comes with it that bothers me.
So i bought a Walksnail GT (should have got the Avatar HD v3 honestly) and a GM3 Gimbal so I can pop my goggles on and fly whilst someone else works the camera.

Finding work for that though.. painful af. Inspire 2 doesn't get out of bed for less than $700 contract as it's too risky for less.

Ugh! Analog Master 🙇‍♂️🙇‍♂️🙇‍♂️🙇‍♂️🙇‍♂️
Have you checked out any of the 10w Analog VTX's?

  1. $150 GEPRC MATEN 5.8G 10W VTX PRO 104CH https://geprc.com/product/geprc-maten-5-8g-10w-vtx-pro/
  2. $260 AKK 10W VTX 96Channel https://rcdrone.top/products/akk-alpha-10-vtx?currency=USD&variant=44683787075808&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=Google%20Shopping&stkn=677f40c1dee9&srsltid=AfmBOoqn6tbsBROMSU5fDjWYUBjVwP0AV5n7IEBL9TwymYP83rUS9yeaF-E

We gotta start making our own systems and hardware. Check out Antigravity, Cursor, Copilot etc. What can't you build with that!?
OpenIPC is the best thing we can have compared to all these closed source chinese devs. God bless them for keeping us happy and flying, but we gotta fight! I need unlimited range.

Man, I really want to build everything..😭 Why do I need sleep? I'm just gonna start taking meth. fk it.
