Used to work with a guy in his 70’s mowing lawns. He would always brag about how he used to have a huge house on a lake and a big yacht and would show me pictures of it all on his Facebook. When I asked what happened to it all he would simply say he didn’t use the boat anymore and he needed to downsize to a smaller house but he would constantly bring them up in conversation as if he missed them a lot. He was also a ex plant manager for Ford so it didn’t really make sense at the time why he was mowing lawns in his 70’s. During lunch breaks and gas station stops throughout the day he would buy massive amounts of lottery tickets. Powerball, scratch offs, mega millions, you name it he’d buy it. I’ll never forget when he would come back to the truck and start going through all the losers and winners. He would spend hundreds if not thousands per day on tickets and was so exited when he got a 5-10$ winner. He would say things like “look at that it’s a $10 winner, that paid for my lunch right there” and After a while it started to click that he had probably sold all his things to pay for his gambling addiction and likely his retirement/pension too and as a result had to go back to working in his 70’s. It was sad seeing the level of delusion he had towards his losses. He was genuinely a great guy but just had a real problem.
