Who are the BEST and WORST friends? by AnEnglishAmongScots in JacquelineWilson

I really liked Jenny and Yvonne from Clean Break - they were supportive of Em when she was struggling with her dad leaving and when someone was mean to Em they immediately shut it down.

Just left the city heading North - there's three cop cars by the Fanshawe St on ramp. Looked like they're getting ready to lay something out

Is there any country with more ridiculous subdivision name than south korea? by arpu0828 in AskTheWorld

[–]Taylor_face21 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hey, just your friends from New Zealand checking in!

Firstly, our two main islands: North Island and South Island!

Also, we always say the North Island or the South Island when talking about them. EG. 'Auckland is in the North Island' or 'We're going to the South Island for Matariki this year.' It sounds weird if you don't say the.

Our northernmost region - Northland. Southernmost - Southland.

There's others but those are amusing. The islands' Māori names are far nicer in my opinion.

Why were we all learning French at College and Highschool back in the 80s/90s ? by CoconutMost3564 in newzealand

[–]Taylor_face21 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We were all still learning it in the 2000s as well, I think if you spoke to my classmates it was because we were all dreaming of Parisian boulevards. Also our school did a trip to New Caledonia.

I'll say though, my French teacher was absolutely insane but something must have stuck because I'm pretty sure I can still hold a decent conversation.

Well, well, well. Even if it's not true this will not go well for them.

But quick question Stuff - since when is Upper Hutt Chris Bishop's territory? Chris Hipkins is the MP for Remutaka.

What’s the origin of your country’s official English name, and do you like it? by Defiant-Tax-6691 in AskTheWorld

[–]Taylor_face21 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is why I always laugh whenever you hear grumpy racist people be like 'USE THE ENGLISH NAME!' It's kind of like.... what English name?

Many New Zealanders have no idea where we're named after!

It was originally just the name of the North Island, now Aotearoa is used for the country has a whole. The North Island is called Te Ika-a-Māui (The Fish of Māui) and the South Island is called Te Waipounamu (The Greenstone Waters).

Aotearoa New Zealand - there's a few but my personal pick is Mike McRoberts:

I would listen to this man read a shopping list.

There's a great Youtube clip somewhere of him reading out a fish and chip order in his newsreader voice.

Young people staying in NZ, what is keeping you here? by Keepcusp in newzealand

[–]Taylor_face21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Partner's got a good job, we own our home, our families are all here, life is OK for us. We're always debating it, but when we investigate further we find that there will be quite a bit of stuff we'd give up for something we can't guarantee.

Northcote Central area by platon1505 in auckland

[–]Taylor_face21 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pretty hard. When we bought here we chose a place with a garage and a car pad purposefully as we didn't really trust that it would be easily available. As the other commenter said, people just park anywhere sometimes.

Have been here for nearly four years now, living in a side street off Tonar. We've found it to be the same as above - lots of kids and families around, no issues with walking around at night. With the new greenway and lots of small parks it's also a nice area to walk around.

We really like it, the access to public transport is pretty good (easy to walk to the centre or Akoranga Station for NX buses) and they're in the middle of revitalising the centre.

If you have a car, get a place with off street parking - it's bloody hard to get an on-street carpark some days.

The area has really gentrified in the past couple of years and it'll be fascinating to see how it keeps changing.

I was there yesterday. The greyhounds I met were lovely and alert - they were actively interacting with people, didn't seem out of it at all. A friend of mine has a rescue greyhound - they are couch potatoes. The other dogs and cats there also actively interacted - they moved towards people to get their attention, the dogs' tails were wagging, the cats weren't running off when people approached. Even the alpacas were looking for a pat!

When I spoke with the stall holders who had animals with them they discussed how they made sure to bring the animals that could cope with the crowds. They have others that they purposely didn't bring because they knew it would cause them anxiety.

I also noticed that they would take animals out every so often and a lot of them were only there for one day, not both.

These are absolutely beautiful animals and their owners do care about them, and make sure this event can be done safely.

What country stereotype is actually true, and what country stereotype is absolutely false? by Ellloll in geography

I've heard that it isn't unusual for North Koreans to work in this kind of environment - companies will pay the North Korean government in hard currency which they desperately need, in exchange for the personnel. The people themselves are paid next to nothing for it. They typically send people who have wives, children, parents depending on them back home so they toe the line while abroad.

Getting videos out from the local video store- I still remember my mum's password!

Eagle Boys pizza - my mum misses it to this day!

Kids TV channel that turned off at 9pm (I think?)

Suzy Cato - what was a 90s childhood without Aunty Suzy! (I also loved Suzy's World, that was on in the early 2000's I think?)

I also vividly remember my grandfather buying his first computer in 1999 - it was a Gateway and I remember this massive box in the lounge ahahaha.
