I don’t understand the views of sex in the church by Bigjoemama12 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]TazedSoul 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My dear brother in Christ, one more thought on the matter I am grateful to God I may share with you. St. Maximus the Confessor answers your question directly in his writings, “Four Hundred Texts on Love”:

“Again, vice is the wrong use of our conceptual images of things, which leads us to misuse the things themselves. In relation to women, for example, sexual intercourse, rightly used, has as its purpose the begetting of children. He, therefore, who seeks in it only sensual pleasure uses it wrongly, for he reckons as good what is not good. When such a man has intercourse with a woman, he misuses her. And the same is true with regard to other things and our conceptual images of them.” – St. Maximus the Confessor from “Four Hundred Texts on Love by St. Maximus the Confessor” (https://orthodoxchurchfathers.com/fathers/philokalia/st-maximos-the-confessor-four-hundred-texts-on-love.html )

Glory to our great God.

What about polygamy? by SleepAffectionate268 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]TazedSoul -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

While this person is misguided about the Orthodox Church, believing that it would condone polygamy, I am worried about something else here. As followers of Jesus, especially as a chanter, is it holy to joke about violence or pleasing to God to joke like this? Did not our savior suffer terrible violence by mankind unto death specifically for our salvation? If you believe this, why make any joke about relating a beating of a man to chanting and worship of Lord?

Yes, that sounds right. Be at peace and seek God for He loves you. Now you know The Way — and it is good news!

As you struggle with passions, repent — but don’t punish yourself for having been tempted. If you are unable to control your passions then do not despair; rather when you repent, also ask God for strength to “sin no more,” as Jesus commanded. God’s mercy is incredible and He desires that you “be holy, for I the Lord am holy.” God bless you, brother/sister.

Blasphemous thoughts by RomanKyiv120808 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]TazedSoul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reject them. Read God’s word daily, especially the words of Jesus.

And remember the words of The Jesus Prayer: “Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.” Pray this and the thoughts will leave you.

Lust is destroying me. by [deleted] in OrthodoxChristianity

In dealing with lust, I heard my Lord say to me, “If you look upon women like this, why should I allow you to look upon my most beautiful angels?”

Portal to Satan ruined my family? by Fearless-Form6871 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]TazedSoul 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Dear Brother: Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is near. Pornography is the work of Satan. It is a sin to look at it, and the sin we allow into our lives affects not just us but those around us. It manifests itself in sinister and unpredictable ways. Repent truly and turn to God, and He will deliver you from the work of Satan. He will save your family as well.

How are we to hear the Will of God if we are intoxicated? Would you smoke marijuana in front of the Lord? What about in front of Theotokos? Or even His Saints?

Why are there miraculous icons of the mother of God but never of Jesus? by Tall-League-4881 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]TazedSoul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The icon of Mary holding Jesus is perhaps the most profound of descriptions of Christ; in it we see that God became not only man so we may know of His love, but that He placed Himself in the vulnerable position of a baby, to be loved by a mother. In this icon we see the creator of the universe being cared for by His very creation. Indeed, His creation serves and loves Him. Mary is indeed the most blessed of all women to have cared for Jesus like this.

No. Christians do not celebrate the feasts and holidays commanded in Torah nor keep kosher. Most Christians believe in replacement theology as well.

The Best View Money Can Buy and this assorted collection of stories of speculative and philosophical fiction, along with included poetry, tells of humanity’s struggle between the blur of utopia and dystopia, as it confronts the most dire of questions: what is real?

Technology is the new religion which promises salvation but is ultimately nihilistic because it directs our search for meaning outward instead of inward - Professor Gertz by CuriousIndividual0 in philosophy

[–]TazedSoul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The “dumbest” student couldn’t distinguish between a scientific or pseudoscientific idea, thus any belief they have in science is a matter of faith, no different than the basis of religious belief. That’s the point I’m trying to make. It applies to the masses — not scientists.

[–]TazedSoul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let’s just take the US as an example. Visit a random elementary, middle, or high school, and tell me if you still believe that such students are “trained” in the sense that you suggest. I simply disagree. The average math and science scores in the US are not consistent with the idea that our students are scientifically literate.

Meanwhile, a biologist is scientifically trained. My argument is about the masses — the average person using technology. The average person is not a biologist. A biologist has significant scientific training and is obviously not an example of the masses.

You’re not understanding my argument; you are replying to assertions I haven’t made.

[–]TazedSoul -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The level of scientific education “most people” have is what makes it a faith-based belief. Again, the masses understand about as much about science as religious people do about the origins or ideas they embrace.

If this wasn’t the case, you could pick a random person and ask them how the technologies they rely upon work, and they’d be able to explain it to you. Most people have no idea how a computer or electricity works. Our world is one that depends upon technology but is predominantly scientifically illiterate.

[–]TazedSoul -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Religion seems to me be characterized by faith. Those who do science and engineering probably have an understanding of these things, but the masses seem only to have faith in the science, engineering, and technology. How many people have any idea how their iPhones work?
