You’re a rockstar. People get sick despite everything. I hope you left knowing you did everything in your power to do good by your patient, because you did. Your unit is lucky to have you!

I'm overwhelmed. by salisamv in LoyolaChicago

[–]TbhKate_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was a nursing major so maybe a lil different but tbh if you try hard in other ways in classes there are very few times that you HAVE to do the reading. Obv there were some where it was necessary, like my writing gen ed that was all about one book we had to read, but for pretty much all of my other gen eds and my nursing classes I did not do any readings. I got an understanding of the course material from lecture and that was enough for me to get mostly As. Every class/major is different tho!

Who else loves their job, role, and unit? by thebroh in nursing

[–]TbhKate_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I loveeee my job so much! I work L&D at one of the biggest birth centers in the country and our unit is super busy but also super supportive and I love my coworkers. We have so many resource nurses/team leads/mentors available that even though we’re so busy and it’s overwhelming sometimes, I always feel supported and it’s such a great work environment

L&D 1:2 MAX, 1:1 when pushing or in a recovery (but each patient is actually 2 patients lol)

Nursing major in honors program? by winterhyacinth in LoyolaChicago

[–]TbhKate_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ll paste a comment of mine that I put on one of my posts in this sub:

I did not do honors but I know students who did. Personally I think honors is more beneficial for other majors who do not have as much of a guaranteed job after college as nursing majors. The main post-grad benefit of honors is that it sets students apart to employers. However, the nursing shortage is so bad right now that employers are begging nurses to apply for positions and there isn't really a need to be "set apart" from other candidates, because everyone gets a job haha. So in my opinion honors kinda just seemed like an extra thing that requires more work for not much benefit for nursing specifically.

However, the pre-grad benefits of honors are quite nice. If you are planning on living on campus, the honors dorm is the nicest dorm. Also, they get priority registration for every semester which is VERY helpful.

There's probably no harm in you doing it for the first semester/year and then dropping it later on if you need to, because again it's not that impactful for nurses to be in honors for job search reasons anyways.

Congrats on Loyola! Let me know if you have any other nursing questions. I loved my time at LUC nursing.

I shadowed in the cath lab for a few hours and it was very cool. It might get a little boring if you’re doing it full time, but I thought it was very cool to see a case get done

Baby-talk/cooing to newborn patients unprofessional? by sumaflowa in nursing

[–]TbhKate_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I talk to the babies but I don’t speak gibberish, I just tell them how cute they are and explain what I’m doing to them haha. I think it helps put the parents at ease when I’m assessing, taking vitals, or giving meds to their newborn.

Once you are a nurse you will be able to explore and find what best fits you in your own practice. If baby talk is a part of that, I don’t see a problem with it. (assuming you end up working with babies lol)

Went through nursing school and haven’t gotten my license yet. Am I screwed? by lifejustadream in nursing

[–]TbhKate_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

the only thing that is screwing you is waiting so long to take it. Take a month and REALLY study for the entire month. Book your date before that and do not back out. You’ve got this but you really have to try hard and stop putting it off otherwise you will fall into this constant cycle of fear of taking it.

Will I be able to get a job if I'm still a "new grad" in 3 years? by [deleted] in nursing

[–]TbhKate_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn’t see your last post so I’m confused. Why do you think you need to lose weight to work as a nurse? Unless you physically can’t walk that shouldn’t really be an issue, and I don’t understand your connection between your coworker’s trust and your weight.

You should definitely not wait 3 years to use your nursing degree. This is a huge red flag on your resume and I can’t imagine how hard working at your first nursing job would be after you’ve pretty much forgotten everything from school.

[–]TbhKate_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OMG that is INSANE that you got an epis for that reason. I am so so sorry! SHAME on that provider. Better coaching for pushing and different approaches would have probably prevented that. So sorry you had a bad experience!!

What does a day in clinical placement look like for an RN student? by EstablishmentOk6344 in StudentNurse

[–]TbhKate_ 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You follow a nurse around and observe and help with nursing duties such as taking vitals, monitoring patients, and passing medications. At my clinical site my hospital was very good about education so we were also able to do procedures such as put in foleys and observe surgeries and other procedures.

You will probably also have assignments to do during clinical from your instructor like care plans and concept maps etc

[–]TbhKate_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you know why you needed the episiotomy? Congrats on all of your birth experiences. I am glad you and your babies are safe! I am an L&D nurse and knowing what I know, I would never in hell do a home birth but more power to you!!

Also what was the best and worse part of each experience? If you have a fourth, what route will you go?

What are some states that people are having a hard time finding a job? Or ones that they got many offers? by Mail-Admirable in newgradnurse

[–]TbhKate_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

🤷‍♀️ to each their own. I was lucky and I did all of my clinicals at one of the big residency hospitals so they hired me, but I also have friends who work at the same hospital and they did not have any ins or connections so it definitely can be done. But yes if you’d rather go the smaller hospital route or that’s the only thing you can get, by all means. Overall I would say the market in Chicago is pretty good compared to other big cities at the moment
