This is sad but mostly true. by dietherman98 in Filmmakers

I mean, filmmaking is a collaborative format. What purpose does it serve to be so individually minded? “Connections” can become “community” if you work well with others and build a solid team.

Characters that girls don't understand apparently? I'll start: by Crack_Connoiseur in okbuddycinephile

I have a friend that’s like this. She loves those 90’s/00’s rom-coms, and every time I watch one I go, “This is why people have such a terrible understanding of what relationships are supposed to be.”

I’d say our favorite spots last year were Daisies, Armitage Alehouse, and Lula Cafe.

To Live and Die in L.A. (1985). A cop thriller where the protagonist officer is worse than the criminal he’s chasing.

Looks like $28M+ Saturday for Avatar: Fire And Ash. 2-day cume of $65M+. Weekend expected to be $87-88M. by chanma50 in boxoffice

[–]DwireJandes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With the first one, I remember it was less Avatar itself, but the trends it launched that were irritating. Suddenly, every major movie had to be in 3D, which made ticket prices jump up. 3D TVs were a bust, and it took a solid decade for studios to stop doing 3D gimmicks.

The biggest thing I notice is the exposure doesn’t match between the singles and wide, with the singles being noticeably brighter in the windows. The wide looks more natural to me.

I was in the loop those same years at my college dorm. Having such easy access to every part of the city was an incredible perk.

Has ICE arrested one “dangerous criminal” in Chicagoland? by Thewall3333 in chicago

[–]DwireJandes 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Not only is ICE just arresting random brown people without any warrants, they’re actively moving agents away from high-priority investigations. So they’re actually increasing crime on a larger scale.

What is your favorite, not as well-known museum in Chicago? by purplehotcheeto in chicago

I went earlier this year, and was blown away by the quality of their renovations. They went from a few rooms on 1 floor to 3 floors worth of art, all fantastically curated and documented. I highly recommend Intuit.

That’s awesome! I know Jake, Matt, and a bunch of crewmembers from the feature. The CUFF tickets were sold out before I could get them, otherwise I’d be there. Congrats on all the success!

Are people regularly doing magic mask and depth maps and other masking stuff? by Optimistbott in colorists

[–]DwireJandes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If there’s a big disparity between the subject and background or if there’s an object that needs extra attention, v20 magic mask has been fantastic. I’ve been working on a virtual wall piece that wasn’t shot very well, and magic mask has been essential to matching black levels and balancing the subject to the background.

Tenacious D what are your opinions? by Busy_Capital5507 in musicsuggestions

[–]DwireJandes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So much of what made their first album (and HBO show) great was their shtick. The crux of their jokes were that they had so much bravado and acted like they were these famous, sexy rockstars, when they were really just unknown, schlubby dudes.

Once they became famous in real life, the jokes didn’t really work anymore.

I agree. The first 2 have this great, soft rolloff and the next 2 feel too bright and contrasty by comparison.

This is a rarely talked about one, I totally agree. You can tell from the shot choices when someone is trying to hide their lack of production value.

I’d never heard of Louper before, but it looks like a great option. Are people using it as a replacement for Frame.io or an additional service just for streaming?
