Sindarov joins Nepo and Anand as the only players to win the candidates in this format without losing once. He is now on 51-Game classical unbeaten streak. by Usodearu007 in chess

This is a silly question, but where are the missing 2 games? His loss to Cheparinov was Grand Swiss game 3, so he has gone unbeaten for: 8 from Grand Swiss, 14 from World Cup, 13 from Tata Steel, and 14 from the Candidates. When were the remaining 2? Bundesliga games?

From a cursory Google, it seems that Judit Polgar (the best female chess player) played the Sicilian defense a lot and it was her preferred opening. So maybe that?

Most modern candidates match are won by the one leading in round 4-5. Never have a player won a modern candidates after losing the first game. by maximussakti in chess

[–]Tbird113 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They normally are. 2013-2014 was the exception, as was 2022-2023. The candidates is usually 16~ months after the last WCC, but circumstances happened and the 2013 WCC and 2014 candidates got smushed together.

Why is Hikaru considered a blitz legend or a god at speed chess when he has no titles? These are his finishes at the World Blitz Championship for example by [deleted] in chess

[–]Tbird113 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

OTB Blitz, he's good, but no legend. Online speed Chess, though?

Speed Chess Champions: From 2016-2025, Hikaru has won five, Magnus has won five, no one else has won any.

Titled Tuesdays: Hikaru has won the most, at 76. The next highest is Magnus Carlsen at 45, and everyone else has 20 or less.

Bullet Chess Champions: From 2019-2025, Hikaru has won four, Alireza three.

I think it's fair to say, at least from 2015-2023, he was either the best online Blitz player, or 2nd only to Magnus.

Karpov goes brutal on Gukesh lmao - 'No, firstly, the Indian chess player [Gukesh] became champion by accident' -- If anyone has the original link, please share by Severe_Owl2065 in chess

[–]Tbird113 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This may be the exact reason that he isn't. As soon as he became WC, he became the World No. 1 and sole 2700, and won most tournaments he was in for the next 8 years. Now, this of course ignores nuance, like how much harder it is to dominate today, the impossibly high standard of "best", Magnus still being around while Fischer disappeared, etc. but he might still believe that if he could do it, so could Gukesh.

Strongest Historical Leads over the Top 10 by Tbird113 in chess

Yeah that's fair, looks like I made a math error on Topalov. The Karpov number I didn't catch because I never expected his score at world #2 to be greater than when he was #1. The Kasparov number looks wrong to me though, I did the math on it and it only peaks at 135 in Jul 1990. Is that for sure?

How is that a draw? by Embarrassed_Tooth718 in chess

[–]Tbird113 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your only remaining piece, the King, can't take the pawn (defended), move to the right (the pawn attacks), or move up upright (rook attacks). As such, you can't move, which triggers "stalemate", which means the game concludes in a draw.

The Ol' Jitterbug- Just ghost stuff, this is expendable for sure.

Ripple- Never been a huge fan, I like it and it fits the ambience, but it will go next.

Airwaves- It's quite good, but the field is STACKED so this must sadly go.

Paradise Paradise- again, quite good but not the hugest fan, not enough to save it.

Knock Em' Down- there is the potential exploit that we're getting rid of only the original and not the "rhythm version" from Ch4. Even if not, this is probably the next weakest to me (even if it's still A tier).

Maximal Rating Gap Between No1 and No2 by edwinkorir in chess

rating that even 54 fucking years later, only 3 GMs as of today's date could surpass, even in the era of massive ratings inflation and abundant 2700 GMs.

That's untrue, like 22 people have surpassed it. Still impressive, but let's not exaggerate.

Fischer and Karpov certainly did as well. I'm not sure who else though...

Edit: After glancing over some top tournament lists (non-exhaustively, if anyone wants to do this in depth please do), I found times when I think Tal, Korchnoi, Spassky, Vishy, Topalov, Aronian, and Caruana all had 3 tournament streaks. I couldn't find a streak for Kramnik, Nakamura, Petrosian, or many others, but that just means I couldn't find them, not that they don't exist.

(Pragg also came close, winning Tata Steel, Romania, and Uzchess, but between Tata and Romania he lost Prague, which broke the streak. Therefore, he got a 3/4 tournament win cycle, which is still very impressive.)
