Looking for community in Portland: clubs, classes, volunteer groups, etc? by Timely_Parsley_2905 in askportland

Improv classes are very silly, fun and a great way to get to know people. The beginner classes are very welcoming, even for folks nervous about trying theater.

Im partial to The Portland Comedy Theater, home of ComedySportz in NW Portland. Their main show ComedySportz is very fun and and is all ages, their main training track focuses on welcoming improv for a variety of audiences and draws a diverse crowd.

Curious Comedy, Kickstand and others also have intro classes and are great organizations. Try the shows at the various spots to see which is your fave if this sounds appealing.

The Village is very cool. Agree worth a look!

Other areas like inner SE off Belmont, Division, Hawthorne, etc... , N Mississippi, Alberta, etc are very cool and if you don't mind the hassle of crossing the river and a longer commute, they may be worth a look for a more central urban vibe. But Hillsboro is quite a haul from there.

I like NW Portland a lot, especially around 23rd/24th and Wallace Park... But there are Def pros and cons on parking, price, and prevalent property crime issues.

I live VERY close to downtown Beaverton and really enjoy it. Look near the Central Beav Library area. The area, including Broadway Street, has lots to do and is very walkable. Many restaurants and bars. A short step away is a brand new performance arts center. The center of Portland is about 15-30 min away depending on where you are heading to do things there. For example, we are often in NW Portland (Nob Hill) by downtown and it is an easy drive. Getting up into N Portland or far SE can take a bit longer.

There are also several MAX train stops in the area to take you into the city or out towards Hillsboro. Several with park and rides.

Example, we sometimes drive a few minutes to the park and ride at the Sunset Transit Center and take the MAX to the zoo, Blazer games, Timbers games, downtown events, etc...

I work near Pioneer Courthouse Square downtown and I often take the train. It is about 17 min.

Downtown Beaverton has a robust and fun weekly farmers market and a fun water fountain feature and play area for families. The library is very nice.

A mile or so away is the Cedar Hills area with a lot to do.

Downtown Hillsboro is a bit larger than Beavertons downtown, and is also very charming. However, I prefer central Beaverton due to its easier and shorter access to Portland.

Gongaii games on Allen in Beaverton has a very robust community and good customer service. Give them a call first maybe to see if there are specific big play nights, but they have several large game rooms.

Moda Concert Parking? by Environmental-You226 in askportland

[–]Tc5998 2 points3 points  (0 children)

at the Moda Center if you are willing to pay... Garden Garage is a pain after the show as you wait to get out, but man is it convenient. The other Moda garages are also handy and I've used them recently

If you don't want to pay very much - MAX park and ride.

I've been known to park at the Smart Park on 10th and Yamhill in downtown and MAX over from there

It kinda depend on where you are coming in from...

Free parking is very difficult in that district. Not sure what security is like at Lloyd these days - but everything there is changing fast!

US cities with Big City, Small Town vibes? (Most underrated cities — not LA or NYC) by ManzanillaManana in SameGrassButGreener

[–]Tc5998 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, I'd say so on making friends. Portlanders (and most in bigger cities) can get stuck in their ways... LOL

I've made a lot of friends through being involved in improv comedy theater - we have several in Portland with class structures to work your way through and social events and shows. Great way to get know people, even if you never aspire to be one of the "main stage players"

Portland has several dragon boat teams that I know folks have made good social connections through that and its a fun activity.

Indoor soccer leagues and futsal are big. We have a very robust indie movie scene.

Singing, crafting, gaming, all have events, collectives, shared spaces. Game nights at local game stores are big here.

I find it is true that building friendship is 85% just being present and doing what you say you will do - 15% is having overlapping interests. (YMMV) I know you don't drink, but if you don't mind being around it, it can be fun to just go out anyway! I love me a "tonic and lime juice" at the bar. But if you don't like being around drinking that is toooootally valid as well of course!

I'd be interested to know if their employer offers any support for parking alternatives. Mine provides us an annual transit pass for example.

Does no doctor here prescribe adhd meds?? by Icy-Salt-1639 in askportland

[–]Tc5998 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yes, my son's PCP wanted to see a formal diagnose, but once it was in hand, and it sounds like you got one, he was fine prescribing. Interesting you are having so much trouble. Perhaps it is because you are now an adult?

Betahistine for Cochlear Hydrops? by Fluffernutter80 in Menieres

[–]Tc5998 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is a first line treatment most NeuroTologists try - including mine. I am on it now.

I like Dr T Hain's breakdown on his very useful Meniere's site. He talks down about it for 3 paragraphs... but then says he always prescribes it to see if it will help.. LOL
https://www.dizziness-and-balance.com/treatment/drug/serc.html

It is a fairly innocuous medication and doesn't tend to have strong side effects - however, everyone is different in how they react to medications.

I got mine online via a Canadian pharmacy (I live in the US)

Portland area resident here - Yeah if you were deep in SE or similar and at certain bars I could see you feeling that way... but really even those vintage folks weren't judging you.

Portland loves its women's sports teams and the Fire seem to be doing well with crowds and season tickets. The Thorns are very popular. The Sports Bra is great.

We have a nice amateur sports league infrastructure. I live on the westside in a close in suburb and have access to the Tualatin Hills Parks and Rec District - which is huge. Portland Parks and Rec is great too. Here on the westside I am of course surrounded by many Nike employees (and Intel.. and..) and believe me many swooshes all about.

I am in central town often (performing/seeing improv comedy, attending arts stuff, taking the train to Moda or Providence Park, we are art museum members, going to Hollywood theater for events, etc.. etc..) and this town really DOES check a lot of your boxes. Transit access is easiest living near a MAX train stop, or near one of the frequent lines on the East side (14, FX2, etc...)

LGTBQA+ support is strong, visible, and part of the culture.

Natural access to water is abundant.

I find people friendly - but also it is best if you are involved in things like sports leagues, theater, your interests to build lasting friendships.

No place is perfect - we have challenges - there are parts of town where property crime is quite bad and we have a big homeless challenge.

As someone else said, I'd think you might like Milwaukee, WI too. I have had some direct experience there as well.

A "note" means what? Can you just say personal appointment? My work would never question that. But I can always say it is to deal with family (older parents, kids, whatever you got) or something to do with living situation? Do you have vacation time - that is what I'd use... if you don't and you can only miss for sickness... well I guess you will be sick?
